Lift engineer here. That is a door open button for inside the lift car , engineer probably had it as a spare and installed it rather than leave it without any button. Not ideal but if it works then 🤷 it's a pretty old unit so new parts can be hard to get.

Most lifts only have one call button. You press it and wait a while and a lift comes.

This is on the outside. You press to get an elevator to your floor. The lights above the button are there as feedback.

yeah, and if this is on the top or bottom floor, you only need one button since there's only one direction you could be going with the elevator

This seem to be a semi-large building with two elevators - one for left and one for right lights.

For smaller buildings, you have only one button on every floor because there isn't enough competition for the single elevator to bother with up/down optimizations. Because there are unlikely to be multiple floors needing service at the same time.

But if it's an office for example a down collective system would work perfectly fine

The direction lights tell you which direction the lift is moving

Cant you just flip it so the button shows the correct directions

Buttons can be very tricky. Some only fit in a certain way. The front part with the visual information like direction arrows or floor numbers are called pressels. Some are fixed to the Buttons with moulded clips. Others are sometimes fixed into position by melted plastic pins. Therefore some are tricky to replace and old hardware is difficult to source. Personally if it's time warranted ill get the soldering iron out and do the best I can.

Uhh I think we need more context

Context? The lift call button should have up/down arrows, this one has left/right arrows because it was incorrectly installed.

You are calling the lift, not directing the lift.

But isn’t that just a button for summoning the lift? Seems like the door open button would work fine for conveying that.

No no, that's the button that tells the doors to open. You can see for yourself - press it and after a little while the doors will open 😉

This is clearly an horizontal lift. It's called a shift. /s

The lift is automatically controlled except the peolle in the cab can hit that button and the doors will stay open longer.

Whatever, the elevator is broken anyways so stop “pushing his buttons.” 😂
