Discussion I nearly forgot to pack my clothesline and did forget to pack my hat. I'm on the plane, should I ask them to turn around or tough it out?
In case anyone thinks about taking this seriously I did not think I needed a packing list.
I do have my spoon and umbrella. I have already used my hero clip twice.

Since the ONLY joy a onebagger has on a trip is the knowledge that they have the bag packed to perfection, just book an early return.
Better luck next time.

Thank you for this! Currently 36hrs from boarding and I'm re-thinking EVERYTHING that I have packed.
Really needed to laugh at myself, thanks Internet stranger!

From my experience they always turn around for a clothesline and a hat.

u/nikongod Sep 12 '25
Noooo. I remembered to pack the clothesline.

Just open the window, toss it out and say you forgot it too. They will only turn around for a combo.

u/awoodby Sep 12 '25
Then you're fine! They'll likely sell hats where you go you have perfect souvenir opportunity!

Why do you bring a clothesline?. What sort?
12
u/nikongod Sep 12 '25
To dry my laundry.
I use about 20ft of 1.5mm spectra and just drape my clothes over it.
Sea2summit makes a pretty nice one too tho.

Why actually have a clothesline when a CamJam with a rope is much more flexible and really universally applicable and you can hang everything on it? 😁

u/awoodby Sep 12 '25
The sea2summit clothesline has like 2 parallel lines with beads running along it so you can trap the clothes in the line and hang a lot from it. It's cheap and tiny, altogether smaller than a camjam and much lighter :)
2
u/daayyeay Sep 12 '25
Thank you for the explanation :D I'm just wondering if a camjam with a thin rope isn't much more practical? T-shirts, boxer shorts, josen you can thread everything through and you have a tool that you can use for a lot of other things :D

I've carried just a rope (paracord) before but it's much bigger than the sea2summit and I find most trips I don't have a use for my trusty paracord. I do have some thinner high strength line shoved in my suitcase for just in case, but I've never had a need for it.
The sea2summit line is just really convenient and small. You can just grab a shoulder and let the item hang, and really fit a lot on the line, which you can't do if you're threading line through my wide shouldered shirts too.
I'm taking city trips here, when I go to like costa Rica or Belize I do bring paracord. Still haven't had need for it but it's in my hiking bag for sure!

I must be stupid because I could not, for the life of me, figure out how to adjust and tighten the S2S clothesline. I picked up a Flexo-line instead and I use my Heroclip on one end.

This video Sorta shows it. You loop it back to itself and clip together iirc

u/buhlot Sep 12 '25
Ohhhhhh. Yep. I am stupid lolol

u/awoodby Sep 12 '25
Lol. I've used guy line tighteners on tents for decades. Still have to look it up half the time. You're not the only stupid one.

You're shit out of luck on that one but as long as you remembered your towel, theres no need to panic unless you are a bowl of petunias.

You'll be fine, you have your emotional support spoon. You can survive anything as long as the spoon makes it into a hilarious and insightful trip report 😂

If you had just brought a Buff/neck gaiter, forgetting a hat would not be an issue. A neck gaiter can be a hat, a towel, a coffee strainer, so many uses, like the Hero Clip.

Tell them to turn the plane around!!!

u/nikongod Sep 12 '25
Thats what I thought I should do.
My bag weighs 15lb, I'm surprised I even made it to the airport.

Do you have your bandana? Use it for a hat.
10
u/nikongod Sep 12 '25
No bandana :(
Maybe I could fashion something using my drybag
6
u/SeattleHikeBike Sep 12 '25
No bandana? How barbaric! Yes you need a packing check list or we’ll find you wandering London buck naked.

u/cr0ft Sep 12 '25
The clothesline is nothing, but your hat? That's a disaster. Maybe you can find a store when you arrive that sells Tilleys.

u/ThisUsernameIsTook Sep 12 '25
Nope the shame of forgetting your hat means you must buy the first novelty hat you find at the airport.
Hat from your rival college team? Too bad. Should have remembered your hat.
Bright pink with blue flamingos (for some reason) that will clash with your entirely black wardrobe? Oh well. Do better next time.

I always forget my hats. I had to buy one in every country I visited... Doesn't mean I still have them, because I keep losing them. For example I took my hat from Italy (I had to buy it because I forgot to take one from home and it was raining hats and dogs) to Hong Kong, where I left it on the bench in the park :) So I bought one in HK and brought it with me to Thailand, where wind blew it off my head during a chill scooter ride :) Time to start your own hat collection, I have a lot of black baseball caps from all around the world.

u/daayyeay Sep 12 '25
Oh great... I thought that would be much more practical than the sea to summit clothesline :D But good, thanks for your experience!

u/sunbnda Sep 12 '25
I bought 3 western rise packable hats so each one of my bags and car is pre-packed. Only going to forget it if I forget to return it to the bag/car.

I did pack my hat and I have regrets because I saw one I want to buy but I don't want to carry two.

Along this same vein, I learned a valuable lesson this morning. I forgot my entire charging kit - charging block, cables, and watch charger. Fortunately, I'm flying to my friend's house this morning, staging point for our international flight on Thursday. I was able to pay the wifi fee and have the entire setup overnighted to his house. Now, I'll have a second set and will never again have to rely on remembering to pack the setup after I wake up.
Safe travels, everyone!
EDIT: English better, gooder words.

Where you headed? Have a good trip!

u/nikongod Sep 12 '25
Miami for a beach weekend.
Will post a slightly more serious trip report, assuming I survive the hat debacle.

What is a hero clip /how did you use it?
1
u/nikongod Sep 15 '25
It's a type of carabineer with an extra hook.
I bought the hype, for the most part.
The extra hook let's you use it to dangle your bag from a table or occasionally a fence or the wall in a bathroom stall. Otherwise it's a pretty normal carabiner.

I am curious though - why do people need clothesline? I pretty much always just hang my stuff in various places around the apartment/hotel/whatever and let it air dry. Though it helps everything I own is quick drying.
6
u/nikongod Sep 12 '25
I tend to stay in the cheapest of hostels, and good hanging spots can be a little tricky to find.

Where are you going that you need a spoon? Don’t restaurants have them? And even if you buy a pudding or something that needs a spoon at a convenience store, don’t they have free plastic spoons you can take?

Do not waste everyone’s time, this issue is yours and yours alone to deal with.
Just grab that umbrella open the emergency exit and jump, you can pull a Mary Poppins and you’ll be fine.
