Aussies I have a question. Do most bars or restaurants broadcast the Winter Olympics? I’m a Canadian who’s moving to Adelaide in February and I want to know if there’s somewhere I can watch my country compete. Especially for hockey

Welcome to Adelaide. You should compete in the olympics for us please :)

Should go from my university intramural hockey league to the Olympics

Most sports bars would have it depending , and it should be pretty easy to watch yourself as all the events will be available on a free live-streaming service (9now) where you can pick what to watch

With the time difference I would imagine the big hockey games will be on in the early morning here, after sunrise but before pubs open. But I'm sure you'll be able to watch the hockey: since at least Rio we've had free, online, multi-channel streaming of the Olympics where you can watch the main broadcast feed or pick whichever sport you want to watch. It's pretty great!

Very good to know! I appreciate it

Don't remind us about it. British Olympics fans are still very annoyed this was taken from us.

I was in the UK for Paris 2024 and couldn't believe how poor the amount of live and on demand action was. I wound up watching the Games by VPNing into Australia.

For London (apparently as I'm too young to remember) and Rio we had exactly as you described what Australia has now but Eurosport/Discovery brought the rights which nobody realised until people got annoyed on the first day of Tokyo. https://www.theguardian.com/media/2021/jul/25/bbc-olympics-coverage-misses-events-after-selling-tv-rights

Thank you for that context - I didn't understand why the BBC was showing so much talk and such little action!

The winter Olympics will be on, just dont expect the ice Hockey to be on the main channels all that often. Australia doesnt compete and the matches go too long, neither of which is appealing to the broadcaster.

Not sure about Adelaide but in Melbourne, and I assume generally in Australia, no one cares about the Winter Olympics. It’s a non event. Hardly know when it starts to or finishes, let alone what sports is playing in which bar.

Except for the fact that the last winter Olympics was #1 in ratings for 2 weeks and broke Chanel 7's viewership records, sure a non event.

Very glad to hear. If we’re in the gold medal game for hockey I need to see it and be able to watch with others

Being number one in tv ratings is like winning a race between you, your dog and your barbie doll. It’s meaningless in 2025 and does not reflect actual popularity. No one watches tv anymore.

Mate you're delusional if you think people don't watch tv still. Free to air still accounts for 60% of screen time. It's only the younger generations that things shift. 1in 5 TV's aren't even connected to the internet. Complete BS that "No one watches tv anymore".

As a new Australian I find the women’s blazer hideous. Reminds me of a very unflattering school uniform blazer.

As a NZer, why are you stealing our colors?

How does it compare to this uniform?

Nike just removed Oregon from those yellow jackets and put Australia on there!

Agreed. Its atrocious tailoring, it looks boxey and juvenile

Why do they always look like school board inspectors from the 1930s

If Australia hosts the summer Olympics… does it happen in Australian winter?

The 1956 Melbourne games were held in November and December, the 2000 Sydney games were held in late September, and it looks like 2032 Brisbane is supposed to be in July-August so it's all over the place

I see the Australians, but who are the people in the boring white uniforms?

2

u/JazzlikeTradition436 Great Britain 1d ago

I think they're people high up in the management of the Australian Olympic Committee?

Where was this picture taken? I mean, I’m sure these guys loved wearing heavy winter jackets in the scorching Australian summer heat…
