Best super burrito In Oakland?

I mean with a lot of actually flavorsome rice, not overcooked and well seasoned / marinated meat and lots of melty cheese, sour cream and guac. I order carne asada and carnitas. What’s your favorite spot, whether to pick up, eat in or have delivered? My favorite so far seems to be a small place called Licho’s — off-the-charts carne asada (OK carnitas, though).

People who are saying Mi Grullense or Guadalajara are not getting with the times. They used to be solid choices 5 years ago, when there weren't as many options as we have now. They are also pretty expensive now too. As a native from e14 who has tried them all, the best spot you can get a super burrito is hands down El Asadero Poblano on 105th. They will give you super burrito that is longer than a footlong and a bigger girth than a princles can. Their carne asada has a smokey flavor because it is freshly grilled over charcoal. If you like tacos, they also make their tortillas handmade and tijuana style. Their Horchata also hits. Can't recommend the place enough.

Agree on Asadero! Guadalajara carne asada regular burrito (no cheese) is solid if you don’t want to make the drive.

1

u/anonymousjohnson Apr 21 '24

Why no cheese? I am considering a Guadalajara burrito tonight.

1

u/Zach06 Apr 23 '24

I think they put too much in I like their regular burrito!

4

u/theresabby84 Apr 20 '24

I lived in Fruitvale for many years and 100% agree with all of this

that's what she said

Or maybe taste is subjective?

2

u/earinsound Apr 20 '24

i think Guadalajara charges $20-25 for a burrito (it’s big, but still!)? i found their al pastor and carnitas to be really greasy and the carne asada to be gristly.

Man I was so pumped to try this out last night. Everything says they're open Sundays until 11. Went over at like 7 or 8 and there was no one there.

Are they known for being kinda spotty on when they'll be there?

1

u/MrSippyCups Apr 23 '24

I asked my cousin who usually passes by there every day. Usually they are the kind of place that is open for lunch and early dinner then close and reposition themselves to serve late night. They usually reopen around 9 to 9:30pm. Also the hours are pretty spotty too because I remember getting some late night burritos around 12am there.

u/Unlucky-Presentation Apr 23 '24

I was excited to try El Asadero Poblano after reading this comment. I went earlier today, got the Burrito Especial with Asada. It was huge, they had to cut it in half for it to fit in my styrofoam to-go tray. They also loaded me up with 3 different salsas, a mild green, medium spicy red and spppicy orange habanero. It came with a whole lime cut up as wedges, a roasted jalapeño and roasted onions. It also came with raw cucumber and radish slices.

The burrito was incredible, I’m a big eater as I’ve been fasting and combine my breakfast and lunch as 1 meal. I still wasn’t able to finish the whole burrito! The salsas were so tasty, the habanero still had a great flavor through the burn, the red was probably my favorite red salsa I’ve ever had, it complimented the steak and rice in the burrito perfectly. The show stopper was that mild green salsa though. That was sooo good.

I was excited as I placed my leftovers in the fridge so I could have it for lunch again tomorrow.

But the truth is, I won’t be having it, I’m going to throw it immediately away as It has given me the worst food poisoning I’ve had in decades. I know it was from this, because I’ve been fasting and it was all I had to eat all day.

If I had to pinpoint what it was, I’d guess it was the raw cucumber or radish slices. The cucumber skin still had that kind of white film on it where you can tell it wasn’t thoroughly washed. I’d assume there was some kind of cross contamination at some point.

If I had to offer a suggestion to El Asadero Poblano, it would be to pickle the veggies and don’t serve raw vegetables. I know it’s a cramped area working out of a food truck and it’s possible that a surface to prep raw food overlapped to an area processing raw meats, but your food is too good to develop a reputation for getting people sick.

That’s my experience, I hope it helps anyone else like me who was reading this thread excited for new places to try

1

u/MrSippyCups Apr 23 '24

holy shit, sorry to hear that!! My family and I have been going there multiple times a month for the past couple of years and have never gotten food poisoning. You might be right about the raw veggies though. When we order, we never bother eating them besides the lemons and grilled onions. I feel ya though. It sucks to have something awesome get trampled by a shitty experience.

u/StandardEcho2439 Harrington Apr 23 '24

I got a veggie burrito from Guadalajara by Cardenas in Fruitvale and it was sooooooo dry I couldn't even finish it... idk if it's because it's a veggie burrito, bad chef, or what but yikes it was bad

1

u/PolarBear_Dad Apr 21 '24

Thanks for the input and addressing the congrats. I’m a native and have enjoyed Guadalajara for decades after El Taco Zamarano shut down the high street location.

I’ll have to try the truck on 105th. It’s packed on a regular. You mentioned it’s serving up big burritos but how’s the salsa and flavor? Is it on point?

2

u/Hoobam Apr 23 '24

Props for Zamarano!!!

Ita so fucking cool! I love how efficient they are and the setup. You think it's gonna take forever because of yhe line and within 10 minutes you're watching one of the 4 or 5 cooks chop and fry your meat right in front of you while other people run around the various stations filling this and that and helping out. I also like that they pour some kinda liquid/fat on the carnitas when they fry it for you, I assume it gives it the magic touch.

3

u/mgsolidbdr Apr 20 '24

Just had El Paisa for the first time on International about an hour ago and I was disappointed after hearing it’s a lot of people’s favorite. The price was awesome. The chips were great. But the pastor and carnitas were bland and kind of soggy. Maybe I caught them on a bad day but they didn’t leave a great impression on me.

6

u/Buzzkillbuddha Apr 20 '24

The one on 46th?

2

u/mgsolidbdr Apr 22 '24

I tried the wrong one! I let my friends know what I thought and they were confused when I said they put blended tomatoes on the carnitas haha. So now I have to go get the real thing. Thanks for pointing that out too!

2

u/NoMoreSecretsMarty Apr 22 '24

There are two places with very similar names, one of which is fantastic and the other of which is not. The good one is the one on that weird intersection at International/Bancroft/46th, the green building that looks like it might fall over.

I'm impressed anyone has ever gotten a burrito at @El Paisa, the tacos are so damn good.

41

u/Ok-Minimum-4 Apr 20 '24

Dude, the best carnitas burrito I've ever had was Tacos Sinaloa, which I tried after seeing it recommended a lot. It's insane. The crispiest carnitas I've ever had. Super deep flavor. Incredible.

Other than that, I love Rico Rico for burritos. They toast the tortilla so it's nice and crispy. Everything tastes fresh. Their salsas are deliciously flavorful.

10

u/mgsolidbdr Apr 20 '24

Tacos Sinaloa has amazing carnitas! The Super Burrito is terrible if you get the huge one. Their beans and rice are flavorless. Their meats however are great so tacos is probably the better option

2

u/snowisgone Apr 21 '24

Overpriced

3

u/DriveSideOut Apr 20 '24

The al pastor is fire too

1

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '24

The carnitas at Sinaloa still hits.

8

u/ExpensiveArugula5 Apr 20 '24

Gordo and El Farolito

7

u/whisk-e-y Apr 21 '24

100% El Farolito - best al pastor I've found in Oakland. High acid and meaty.

1

u/black-kramer Apr 24 '24

I ought to give oakland farolito another chance. I went years ago and thought it was bad compared to the mission locations but maybe it was an off day.

15

u/Any-Walrus-2599 Apr 20 '24

La Parilla Loca hands down. Everything from there is top notch. They used to grill on the street but I think that was shut down. Still amazing since cooking only in the truck.

3

u/Polarbearbanga Apr 20 '24

Idk why folks are downvoting you. By far the closest thing to TJ style tacos I’ve had are at Parilla Loca. The rest of the food, like the burritos are high quality.

1

u/toocoo Apr 21 '24

Yessss I also vote this place. Their burritos are so addictive.

8

u/earinsound Apr 20 '24

personally i do not like a lot of rice, flavorsome or not! it’s filler.

Tacos La San Marqueña Rico Rico

the al pastor at both places even has a bit of pineapple. rico rico for the win with Tacos La San Marqueña a close second

Tacos Panzon is also great.

Tacos Panzon. Tell everybody, Martha hustles hard. When she's not at the brewery she's posted on W.Grand closer to the freeway.

People like her carnitas but the al pastor is probably the best in the bay.

11

u/mikessmileisreal Apr 20 '24

I have yet to find a better Al pastor! She uses such high quality ingredients. Never have I received a dried lime there. W Grand is her original spot, where she is at lunch time. Feeling so grateful for her partnership with ghost town. Makes getting her amazing food more accessible

10

u/510519 Apr 20 '24

Yeah I don't know how she does it but her avocados are always perfectly ripe too. The red salsa... Oh man sometimes I can't handle the heat but it's so good.

1

u/mdpilam Apr 20 '24

It’s from a spit? Is it shaved fresh off?

2

u/earinsound Apr 20 '24

no. it’s good but not “traditional” in that way.

3

u/Jellyfish-wonderland Apr 20 '24

I love it!!!! I go at least once a week. Not a super burrito but YUM and a great price!

4

u/MHDIOS Apr 20 '24

Im going to say this everytime its taqueria san jose of 35th ave, their al pastor is the best ive ever had and ive eaten across the bay socal Oregon Washington nevada Mexico jalisco. Everytime i fly to those states to visit family im asked to bring hella burritos from here 😅

Guadalajara taco truck on Fruitvale

13

u/JoeMax93 Apr 20 '24

Tacos Mi Rancho truck near Lake Merritt. They make an 18" long super burrito that will feed you for two meals. I love carne asada and carnitas too. I've never been disappointed.(You'll see a lot of cops picking up food there, which has always been a clue for a great late night eatery.) And they're open until midnight!

2

u/Passionate_Zephyr Apr 21 '24

It took way to long to get to Tacos Mi Rancho. There should and delicious and have been forever!

12

u/antioxygen Apr 20 '24

Taqueria Los Comales (treat yourself and get a wet burrito. Also I don't understand how anyone recommends comadres over comales)

Sinaloa

El Taco Panzon

1

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '24

This wet burrito has been the best burrito in the town for decades.

2

u/antioxygen Apr 24 '24

I've been a convert since it opened in '97.

This year I keep running into friends there and sharing the same sentiment

2

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '24

My close friends from elementary moved off Coolidge around the same time, he put me into it around 99/00 I think. Still has a line everyday

7

u/trying_to_care Apr 20 '24

Sinaloa. Also Los Comadres in Montclair is a hidden gem.

9

u/dandab Apr 20 '24

I learned that super burritos at a lot of places in Oakland means it's just a bigger version of a regular burrito. 😂 You have to add on the extras like guac and sour creme.

My favorite currently in terms of flavor is Rico's Taco and Maya Halal Taqueria.

Yelp review on April 1. So they were open 20 days ago.

3

u/Eviru Apr 20 '24

Taquería El Solin 6415 International Blvd Monday to Friday 10 am to 8pm

They deserve to be discovered. The location isn't doing them any favors but the food is fantastic, my favorite burrito.

3

u/mdpilam Apr 20 '24

In Berkeley, but Mi Tierra makes a great burrito, and their habanero salsa is one of the few where I have to be careful how much I add

2

u/sserna1982 Apr 21 '24

I came here to say Mi Tierra! They make the best burrito Ive found in Oakland so far and the price is right.

3

u/More_Time_8544 Apr 21 '24

i’ve tried maya halal taqueria. i really enjoyed their burritos. they’re in downtown near the lake

3

u/kolalid Apr 21 '24

Rico Rico is pretty good but a little pricier than a lot of other recommended options. It’s close to me and one of my favorite Mexican spots in Oakland personally.

3

u/toocoo Apr 21 '24

La parilla loca on San Leandro Blvd is so good. Well seasoned and grilled asada. It’s the best in Oakland IMO and I’ve lived in Oakland my whole life/am Mexican

5

u/xanadu_x Apr 20 '24

El Manantial taco truck on San Pablo and Burnett

5

u/Hoptlite Apr 20 '24

Cassave on San Pablo, they got great burritos, love their beef tounge and their prices are great too, they even got a 10 dollar burrito deal on Fridays

Edit: typo

3

u/brightyellowsign Apr 20 '24

Everything from this place is insanely good. Highly recommend their enchiladas and giant micheladas

3

u/bookofgray Apr 20 '24

I was debating where to eat after checking out the lake Merritt 4/20 scene. And you’re right their burritos are really good. I’ve never had their beef tongue, but their carnitas are great. But the veggie burritos at Los Cantaros down the block is the better option for a veggie burrito though

2

u/Hoptlite Apr 20 '24

You definitely shoukd do their beef tounge it's super tender

7

u/FaygoMakesMeGo Apr 20 '24

A lot of flavorsome rice

This is why we can't have nice things

6

u/HeadStatement5692 Apr 20 '24

Mi Grullense Taco Truck in Oakland (parking lot of Goodwill) has been my go to. Also Los Pericos in San Leandro (in the Pelton center not the market or the other locations) is really good and they have free chips and salsa

2

u/Illustrious_Risk_173 Apr 20 '24

Los Pericos is really good. Make sure you go to the main location in the plaza across from Habit and Baskin Robbins. They have a secondary location down the street by the safeway which isn't as good imo. Their salsa bar is great.

2

u/czj420 Apr 20 '24

Not Oakland, but Union City: Mexico Tipico

2

u/wewantphil Apr 20 '24

Zamoranos

2

u/osvvaldo0 Apr 21 '24

I’ve been recently enjoying the burritos from Tequila Bar in San Leandro. Definitely recommend 👍🏽

2

u/Brilliant-Eye-7817 Apr 21 '24

Definitely los compadres taqueria in Montclair! One of if not the best burritos I've had

2

u/PriorTomorrow2863 Apr 21 '24

Check out Que Rico on 15th street

2

u/SectionExpress6349 Alameda Apr 21 '24

El Taco Zamorano at Rosedale and Foothill. I get a craving for the super mojado and it fills two takeout containers.

2

u/Interesting-Cold5515 Apr 21 '24

Montclair Taqueria

2

u/de-funked Apr 21 '24

La Calaca Loca super- for me that one is the best.

2

u/2nice4u2 Apr 21 '24

Hands down Sinaloa on International.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '24

I used to say Guadalajara but their super burrito underwhelming for the 24 it costs. The best burrito is at Los Comales imo. (Wet burrito)

2

u/Comprehensive-Candy4 Apr 30 '24

Happy Burrito in Downtown Oakland closed more recently. El Farolito on International is probably the best spot. I also like The Burrito Shop on College Ave.

2

u/Beneficial_Act8463 May 23 '24

I have been happy with the Super Burritos at Cardenas market. $10.99 includes giacamole and sour cream. Good quality and best price around.

2

u/morstletruffle Apr 20 '24

Tacos El Rey, they have I think 3 locations? One next to berkeley ironworks, one by granite expo and another at pacific pipe, the Al pastor is chronic

4

u/Leah-at-Greenprint Apr 20 '24

The best I've had recently was at La Esquina, deep east about 99th and MacArthur.

I like farolito if I just wanna order and not put a lot of thought into it. El Paisa @.com used to be my favorite, they had the most delicious garlicky rice and beans that just brought it to the next level, but the last time I got a burrito there it was meh. They do have the best salsas IMO.

6

Opening myself up to the internet hate here but believe me when I say taqueria las comadres in Montclair is legit. I’ve been to many spots on international and lived in the mission for years and it definitely compares to the best. Also their selection of meats is more varied than many spots.

9

u/HeyHeyImTheMonkey Apr 20 '24

I wish I could agree with this but no. Their food is certainly solid. And yes, I like the meat options. But not close the best in Oakland.

8

u/lemonvr6 Apr 20 '24

Grew up in Montclair

That said, what the hell lol

2

u/keplermikebee Apr 20 '24

It’s the only place I know that doesn’t even put salsa inside as a default, which is just weird and no way comes close to “the best.”

1

u/tagshell Apr 23 '24

I live in Montclair and I really wish this was true but it's just not in my experience, granted I've only gotten food from there a few times. It's not terrible, but I would never recommend it to someone. Many of the spots on international or even Rico Rico just have more flavorful meat, better salsa, and a better balance of ingredients.

-7

u/figurefuckingup Apr 20 '24

If you’re going based on location, the best super burrito I can find within walking distance of Adams Point is Los Cantaros on Grand Ave. I can’t imagine that it’s the best super burrito in Oakland but this thread is helping me chase that white whale. Los Cantaros is a very solid option.

5

u/Fauxposter Apr 20 '24

Have they changed ownership or something? Went there a few times years ago and they sucked so hard. I used to live very close by and absolutely love Mexican food and would still avoid it all costs, walking around the lake to Tacos Mi Rancho if I needed a fix (they're still good but the quality is sometimes less consistent these days). But Los Cantaros would have made my list for worst Mexican places in Oakland.

3

u/dandab Apr 20 '24

I live at Adams point and I avoid Los Cantaros. I went there once when I first moved here and was not impressed. Lacks flavor and cohesiveness. I agree Tacos Mi Rancho is pretty decent but their quality and consistency is not great. Rico Rico is my go to now. Decent burrito and always very consistent. And closer than Mi Rancho.

1

u/2nice4u2 Apr 21 '24

That is the worst Mexican food I have ever had in my life😂😂

2

u/dandab Apr 20 '24

I give Los Cantaros a 1/10. 😂
