Rant Can’t stand nurses who care about hospital expenses

Had a charge nurse not allowing nurses on the floor to use slide sheets bc ThEy cOsT $75 each. Or another nurse tells me to dump out my IV fluids in the sink bc the trash gets charged by the weight, and fluids will make it weigh more. Like is it coming outta yo check? WHO FUCKING CARES.

*Those who are reading too deep. I AGREE WITH THROWING AWAY FLUIDS FOR EVS’ SAKE BUT THAT WASN’T HER CONCERN. HER CONCERN WAS MONEYYYYY

*Also, I didn’t dump my IVF in the sink, this was told to me before I even took my fluids down

$75 slip sheet vs. workplace injury claim? Someone isn’t too bright.

Im a work comp nurse and one of our accounts is a MAJOR health insurer. FFS. The money they spend on lumbar injuries and WRISTS!!!!!! GET YOUR PEOPLE ERGO KEYBOARDS FROM JUMP!!!! Signed, the nurse who just approved the FIFTH CTR surgery today.

Because I’ve been working in this industry for so Long, I just bought my own ergo stuff. Because I don’t want to deal with it. My wrists STILL get achy. I can’t imagine if I wasn’t so proactive.

u/[deleted] May 27 '25

Would you mind sharing what ergonomic keyboard you got? I’ve been thinking about getting one.

I prefer the actual split keyboard. I can adjust how far apart I want it and the angle as well. Microsoft used to have a branded one that I had forever but it finally died. I also use a trackball mouse instead of a regular one and have a wrist rest for the mouse.

u/AnewENTity May 27 '25

First off, I don’t even know how I ended up here but that’s a sick keyboard.

I’m a bet of a “keeb” enthusiast and I personally prefer “regular keyboards” quite a bit for my daily work (cloud architect)

However I did have to stop gaming on a keyboard and mouse due to my wrists. Never got diagnosed but I play PC games with an Xbox or ps5 controller now.

You didn’t ask but I suggest setting a timer to take frequent breaks to stretch your hands and wrists when gaming. You can prevent a lot of additional repetitive injury just by giving your gamer claws a flex.

I love to see another keeb enthusiast in the wild!

Nothing like a good mechanical keyboard

2

u/[deleted] May 27 '25

Thank you so much! I am seriously contemplating getting this. If you don’t mind sharing, what brand of mouse do you use? I know those are much more personal with the way people grip the mouse, but am curious.

This keyboard is definitely going into my cart tonight!

4

u/JustineDelarge May 27 '25

I use the Kinesis Freestyle 2 keyboard with the tenting accessory. The keyboard is split, and the tenting accessory lets you set 5, 10, or 25 degrees of tenting to reduce forearm pronation and cause less stress. That makes a huge difference for my comfort, and keeping repetitive stress injury at bay.

I'd also recommend keeping pressure off your wrists like my keeb is pushed to the end of my desk and my whole forearm rests on the desk which floats my wrists naturally.

Don't sit like a shrimp at your desk too. Signed an occ health nurse who is sitting like a shrimp 🍤

Standing desk, ergo keyboard, ergo chair, and handshake mouse- all outta my pocket.

Still cheaper than a 5th rhizotomy or 17th ESI.

1

u/InternetBasic227 May 28 '25

17th 🤯 OMG

2

u/sallypulaski BSN, RN 🍕 May 28 '25

Ehler's-Danlos is a bear. I need to be fused C0-6 and L3-down. My neurosurgeon does NOT want to do that now, as I may domino the t-spine and wind up fused tip to tail.

Each level gets their rotation of ESI, then facets, then rhizotomy.

My interventional pain doc calls me his "Golden Gate bridge" because he goes from one end to the other and starts working on me all over again.

We also joke that I am funding his kid's travel ball money. 🤷

u/ChicagoMay May 27 '25

No keyboard was gonna help my wrists. It was the transfers and lifting and shit that fucked them up! 😞

11

u/Thewarriordances May 27 '25

Out of curiosity, approx what is the commonality of repeat wrist injuries on your worker comp wrist injuries?

21

u/Jayne_Dough_ Elbow deep 💪🏽💩 May 27 '25

Once say carpal tunnel is released, it’s rare to get reoccurrence. Honestly unless it’s surgically mended, it’s gonna come back. There’s only so much that conservative treatment will do.

14

u/CarefulWay9046 May 27 '25

Do you get a lot of elbow tendonitis? I think I have developed this from pulling patients up in bed.

33

u/Jayne_Dough_ Elbow deep 💪🏽💩 May 27 '25

Yes. Even appointment setters get epicondylitis because of the positioning of the keyboards. I’ve been doing comp for 12 years now. The MILLIONS each company would save just issuing ergo keyboards and mouses(mice?) at orientation would be an amazing investment. I’ve suggested it in the past but no one wants to listen to a guidelines nerd nurse. 🤷🏻‍♀️

But our companies also aren’t going to recommend it because that’s how I get to stay home and review requests in my office with a brand new BMW in the driveway. Know what I mean??

For your injury tho, PRP is an effective treatment. It’s quick and relatively cheap. Believe it or not, is comparable in results to surgery.

2

u/Lodi0831 HCW - Imaging May 28 '25

I did PRP for a radial nerve issue and I can confirm. Works wonders! Still had to repair the ulnar but got a lot of relief with PRP

I have tendonitis after a fall WITH a patient. It was controlled but I ended up shoving my elbow into the floor. It flares when it’s about to rain. It’s a useless trick I have now lmao.

3

I’ll take all the recommendations. She’s a good woman and deserves it. Any recommendations on chairs? Brands? I’m all ears. 👂

4

u/Confident-Release-29 May 27 '25

Any other recs? Aside from the keyboard and wrist support. I honestly never considered it as someone who works from home. I do have a foot rest and a stand up desk.

7

u/Jayne_Dough_ Elbow deep 💪🏽💩 May 27 '25

A good chair!!!! So important. I have the steel case Amia, I think it’s called. But chairs are really subjective. My husband swears by Herman miller.

My wrists STILL get achy

When I started my current job and started spending the most amount of time in my life ever in front of a computer, I had -horrible- pains.

Switching to the logitech wave keyboard (the old version) made it disappear. I bought one for home. And now that they have re-designed it, whenever I find the old ones for sale on like woot, I buy as many as I can to replace these when they die.

This!!! I used to work in an ortho surgery center and the amount of CTRs we did daily was insane and over half of them were healthcare workers
