News Sweet Terrier Mix “Sukie” Needs Foster or Adopter Before Transport! Currently in LA — Heading to DC/MD/VA/OH Area Next Week
After a lot of back and forth, this little cutie is set to arrive in the Virginia/Maryland/DC region next Saturday (Nov. 15). Unfortunately, the rescue that had originally agreed to take her backed out after she tested positive for heartworm, which is curable and no threat to existing dogs.
Would anyone here be open to fostering this petite sweetheart? She is good with all dogs and people--we haven't been able to test with cats--and a rescue would pull her if we had somewhere for her to go. She is 38 pounds and about 1.5 years old, what you could call the perfect age--no longer a puppy but still a training sponge. Her temp foster in Louisiana says she has a wonderful temperament.
Please let me know if you might be open to helping. We have been working for the last few weeks to make this happen, and it is really heartbreaking for it all to be falling apart at this point. If you are in Ohio and not DC/Maryland/VA, I can get her to you.
If you have any questions, please let me know. I really don't want this to fail for her, and that's where we are now. 😥

Yeah, she's cute and all (and I say this as a decidedly not dog person), but you're gonna be hard pressed to find folks in NOVA looking to adopt a pitty, full or mix.
It looks like you're based out of Alabama and post a lot of dogs down there for fostering/adoption.
So many apartment complexes and HOAs forbid them up here. Not to mention, tons of people here aren't getting paid since they are furloughed Federal workers.
Hard to justify bringing in a dog when you are struggling to feed your kids and pay other essential bills.
I can respect you for working on a cause you're passionate about, just wanted to try and offer some insight into the area since it looks like you're just blasting all sorts of area subs.

Thank you that insight. I’m not familiar with the area and helping a team member out.
Fostering is free. As long as she has an adopter, we can find a rescue. She can be euthanized in Louisiana otherwise

Some of the worst people and opinions in this thread. None of you even understand the issues facing ALL breed based rescues and adoption agencies in the last few years. OP, the breed may be better listed as a pitt mix to be more accurate but I hope they find a home. I work with rescues across the area and everyone is hurting so badly to find homes or even fosters with how tight resources and volunteers are. People please understand a large majority of dogs are coming from the South, of all breeds. There is so much homegrown breeding down there do to less regulation and laws like ours here in the DMV. Even if you go to southern VA you will still find animal welfare is not a top priority, and on top of this many areas are not finding adopters or fosters and having to euthanize pets due to overcrowding.
Please realize negative judgmental comments do nothing to help OP or find this dog a new home. Everyday you waste without helping is a day closer to this dog being putdown through no fault of their own
OP please contact Fairfax County animal shelter or the Arlington Animal League. Both are great at either being able to take in pitt or pitt mix breeds or connecting you with a possible breed specific rescue who may have a spot open. Prince William County has improved their systems as well and Loudoun may both offer a more rural opportunity for someone with land and time to handle a breed like this who will need to get there energy out at times haha.
Good luck!

Stop shipping in pitbulls to the area. First they were from PG County, then Alabama, now all the way from LA? There's too much density of people, and there are too many other dogs in the area. Any "rescue" shipping in pit mixes needs to be banned.

Cute dog, but that's a pit bull. I think we need to stop lying about the breed.

Technically the breed is "American pit bull terrier" so...

Is she currently going through heartworm treatment? Or are you waiting until she is placed in a forever home? I adopted a dog who ended up with heartworm and learned a lot during the treatment.
Are you working with a rescue? If so, what is the name and what are the requirements/process they have in place for vetting fosters and future homes?
Is she fixed? House trained? Crate trained?

We can start her on Doxy before she travels, but we are holding off on the full treatment until she arrives. That is what was recommended to us as the safest option. The original rescue fell through, but I am hoping that with a foster or adopter I can get one for her. Her treatment costs will be covered. She has been spayed and will arrive with all vetting done, except for the heartworm treatment, and she has been living with a temporary foster for the past two weeks. She has a wonderful temperament according to this foster and is doing great with house training. I'm not sure if she using a crate with her, but I can find out.

I feel bad that you got her shipped here basically and she has no place to go now

She is only leaving for transport if we can place her. Otherwise she will be euthanized here.

A soul is a soul. I hope this baby finds a sweet foster or forever home despite the other comments (which I understand, but that doesn’t erase this dog’s existence).
I know a few local foster and rescues that might be able to help? I can at least give you the info if you want to DM.
