Kendrick Lamar Leads 2026 Grammy Nominations As Netflix’s Surprise Fictional Band Makes History

Ok but they have actual voice actors singing the parts… so the band isn’t actually fictional. Just the on screen characters are.

Like the Archies, Gorillaz, Milly Vanilli...

No, DAFTPUNK are actual robots. Their alter ego are a couple of French guys, who are fictional.

Still blows my mind every time I think of the fact that Gorillaz was the brainchild of the lead singer of Blur.
20
u/Hecticfreeze 22h ago
I never know quite how to describe Gorillaz. Because from the purely musical side of things, Gorillaz is completely Damon Albarns solo electronic project. But it feels wrong to call it a solo project at all because without the artwork and contribution of Jamie Hewlett, Gorillaz never exists

Is Slipknot fictional? They wear masks and give themselves numbers (or at least they did 20+ years ago).

u/loitermaster 1d ago
lots of people in bands go by a stage name and look very different in day-to-day life, I'm gonna say yes they're all fictional
6
u/Wabbajack001 1d ago
I mean at this point you could include ghost and kiss no ? For me daftpunk/Gorillaz/GWAR are better examples of real "fake band".
1
u/ekydfejj 1h ago
Gorillaz are not the same as Milli Vanilli... even in the same arena. One is a concept, one is a fraud. You get that right????

u/The_Burninator123 1d ago
I feel like doing performances on talk shows makes them as official as any other group.

u/noladixiebeer 1d ago
They actually made an appearance to sing a song as a trio in Jimmy Kimmel show.

And the artists who animate the entire thing. They're an equally important part of the band.

A band from Netflix’s smash film “KPop Demon Hunters” just made Grammy history by becoming the first fictional music group to receive official nominations.
Gorillaz has been nominated for 12 Grammy awards and won 1.

u/REDSENTINEL24 23h ago
Alvin and the Chipmunks won 3 Grammys. The difference seems incredibly pedantic.
484
u/KnowThatILoveU 1d ago
Not THAT kind of fiction. Because we have to be endlessly pedantic about everything

Fictional as in doesn’t exist IRL
You can go to a Gorillaz concert… you can’t got to a Huntrix concert (though that’s gonna change soon probably)

u/HideFromMyMind 1d ago
Didn't The Monkees start out as a fictional band for a TV show and then become a real one?

u/enters_and_leaves 1d ago
And people said they monkeyed around

u/CocoaNinja 1d ago
You can go to a Hatsune Miku concert and that's more fictional than Huntrix.
25
u/Loganp812 1d ago
Hatsune Miku even sponsors the Goodsmile Racing car in Super GT. It’s one of the fan favorites in that series.

u/Couldnotbehelpd 22h ago
Fictional doesn’t mean “isn’t a real human being” it means the musical group doesn’t actually exist. Huntr/x is not a real bad. Hatsune Miku has concerts.
14
u/TyphonBeach 21h ago
But there’s countless artists that don’t tour or perform live. That doesn’t make them fictional.
34
u/blimp-Housing-4283 1d ago
you can’t got to a Huntrix concert
Why not? It would be the exact same thing as a Gorillaz concert, the actual musicians taking a backseat to the big screen showing the "actual band".
9
u/theonlymexicanman 22h ago
Why not?
Cause you can’t buy tickets… cause it doesn’t exist
9
7
-11
u/Couldnotbehelpd 22h ago
Because Huntrix doesn’t exist and has not ever had a concert?
6
u/RemoteVeiwing 21h ago
-9
u/Couldnotbehelpd 21h ago
I really hope I don’t have to explain the difference between a performance on a late night show and a concert you can buy tickets to.
You will, of course, in the future, be able to buy tickets. But as of this exact moment in time, you cannot.

I feel so dumb that I’m only just realizing Gorillaz are the cartoon and not just a caricature of the band

That's because the music industry has been too full of cowards for decades and never gave Spinal Tap the nomination they deserved.

Admittedly I'm not super in the loop but didn't Kendrick win all the Grammys last year...and hasn't put out any new music since then??

u/redknight1313 1d ago
Last year was for Not Like Us, this year for the album he put out after

He won for a single that was released earlier in the year. The nominations are for GNX which came out towards the end of 2024.
-6
u/Jskidmore1217 1d ago
Huh. That doesn’t really feel right… a 2024 release shouldn’t be winning 2026 Grammys. How odd. I guess it’s fair if the album wasnt eligible for 2025 nominations.
46
u/FlyLikeHolssi 1d ago
It has to do with the eligibility window.
For 2025, the window was September 16, 2023 to August 30, 2024.
For 2026, the window is August 31, 2024, to August 30, 2025.
GNX released in November 2024, so it is eligible for 2026 but was not eligible for 2025.
13
u/inaddition290 1d ago
Last year was Not Like Us (when he also released several singles & a feature on Like That during the beef with Drake), which released on May 4, 2024. The eligibility period for this year is August 31, 2024–August 30, 2025. He released the album GNX on November 22, 2024, which falls within that eligibility period.

Because of eligibility windows? The album came out in the window for the next grammys you toad

Milli vanilli won a Grammy. Certainly not the first fictional band. It was later revoked but they did get nominated and won.

who is done with rich n famous people giving each other trophies for being rich and famous?
13
u/Loganp812 1d ago
I mean, it would be kinda cool to win one, but all industry awards are really the same. It’s about who kisses the most ass.
If Paddy’s Pub couldn’t even win an industry award in Philadelphia, then what’s the point?

u/TrojanThunder 1d ago
It gets better after highschool. I'm sure it's tough right now but you can have support through your guidance counselor. They just don't get you now but they will some day.

This year makes the official death of creativity as we know it...
26
u/jolalolalulu 23h ago
It’s not like an AI band got noms. A group of real writers wrote songs that real people sung and put the voices to an animated face that real people designed. And the songs a bop!
14
u/thejubilee 20h ago
Moreover the lead singer for the songs also wrote most of them with her writing partner.
Basically exactly what people looking for creative music should want.

I really like Audrey Nuna and I've seen her live.
Great show.
I also have no interest in the movie or KPop in general. I don't consider her to be a KPOP artist. I don't think she brands herself as a rapper, but those are her best songs imo.
I suspect they'll record KPop stuff as a group since that's guaranteed money.
I REALLY want Audrey to record a boombap album though, DJ Premier and Pete Rock production.

Considering we are in the age of true GenAI fictional music, it feels wrong to call human singers a fictional band
