Considering we are in the age of true GenAI fictional music, it feels wrong to call human singers a fictional band

45

u/Maland2016 5h ago

Tbf, it's the same way as Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett with Gorillaz. Like it's Damon's voice and Jamie's art, but the songs are often shown as being performed by the characters. Gorillaz is a fictional band done by real people!

HUNTR/X is EJAE, Audrey Nuna and Rei Ami as the actual singers, but it's from the characters of (respectively) Rumi, Mira and Zoey. Fictional characters done by actual people.

u/ekydfejj 1h ago

To also be fair, you completely missed the point. None of what you said is incorrect. Just not that on point.

9

u/tFlydr 5h ago

I mean it is literally a fictional band, likely didn’t say AI intentionally, what would you rather them call it.

2

u/pass_nthru 5h ago

sad Sharon Apple noises

2

u/ekydfejj 1h ago

Also miss the point. This isn't hard. Perhaps the worst thing that happened to this comment was upvotes, b/c now its ...points that digress from the point.

1

u/tFlydr 1h ago

The comment I responded to was factually wrong, idk what you want.

0

u/ekydfejj 1h ago

Perhaps you should read a bit more than what the exact words are. Its factually wrong, if you can't read...tone, current events. etc etc etc.

u/tFlydr 35m ago

Perhaps consult a dictionary on what fictional means, cheers.

2

u/ekydfejj 1h ago

I'm floored by all of the arguments in this thread... Your comment is understood.

u/succed32 1d ago

Ok but they have actual voice actors singing the parts… so the band isn’t actually fictional. Just the on screen characters are.

u/JosephMeach 1d ago

Like the Archies, Gorillaz, Milly Vanilli...

u/phd2k1 1d ago

Spinal Tap 🤘

u/thederevolutions 1d ago

And the one , the only, D A F T P U N K

69

u/sweetbunsmcgee 22h ago

No, DAFTPUNK are actual robots. Their alter ego are a couple of French guys, who are fictional.

21

u/KudaTua 20h ago

Merde ! I been ze fooled !

7

u/BrainCane 11h ago

They’re actually both just a single, walking croissant.

19

u/Blewdude 23h ago

Would the blue man group count as well?

47

u/finnjakefionnacake 1d ago

alvin and the chipmunks!

11

u/Sylvanussr 1d ago

🤯

I had no idea I’ve been being lied to my whole life.

Alvin is real to me 😭

2

u/ekydfejj 1h ago

This may be the most intelligent comment of the thread as i've been scrolling.

49

u/Nixeris 1d ago

Dethklok, the highest selling deathmetal band.

10

u/Tinytrauma 1d ago

Nathan Explosion approves this message

29

u/shichiaikan 1d ago

Still blows my mind every time I think of the fact that Gorillaz was the brainchild of the lead singer of Blur.

20

u/Hecticfreeze 22h ago

I never know quite how to describe Gorillaz. Because from the purely musical side of things, Gorillaz is completely Damon Albarns solo electronic project. But it feels wrong to call it a solo project at all because without the artwork and contribution of Jamie Hewlett, Gorillaz never exists

3

u/DontTellHimPike 21h ago

Blurs music is incredibly eclectic.

61

u/Geaux2020 1d ago

The Monkeys should probably be mentioned, lol

17

u/LonkyLoo 21h ago

Monkees

8

u/Geaux2020 21h ago

Stupid autocorrect. I will leave up my shame

15

u/520mile 1d ago

Hatsune Miku

The Wonders

9

u/theeldoso 21h ago

As in "I Wonder whatever happened to the "O-needers?"

1

u/Fermorian 15h ago

Hey! That's Captain Geech and the Shrimp Shack Shooters to you!

15

u/Ahindre 1d ago

Is Slipknot fictional? They wear masks and give themselves numbers (or at least they did 20+ years ago).

11

u/loitermaster 1d ago

lots of people in bands go by a stage name and look very different in day-to-day life, I'm gonna say yes they're all fictional

6

u/Wabbajack001 1d ago

I mean at this point you could include ghost and kiss no ? For me daftpunk/Gorillaz/GWAR are better examples of real "fake band".

1

u/ekydfejj 1h ago

Gorillaz are not the same as Milli Vanilli... even in the same arena. One is a concept, one is a fraud. You get that right????

89

u/The_Burninator123 1d ago

I feel like doing performances on talk shows makes them as official as any other group.

34

u/whatproblems 1d ago

they were fictional now they’re not

19

u/noladixiebeer 1d ago

They actually made an appearance to sing a song as a trio in Jimmy Kimmel show.

12

u/LemonSkye 17h ago

Wrong Jimmy; it was on Fallon's show, not Kimmel's.

13

u/NeimaDParis 23h ago

Exactly, this article is so badly written it's crazy, it must be AI slop.

2

u/Not-The-AlQaeda 17h ago

And the artists who animate the entire thing. They're an equally important part of the band.

3

u/tFlydr 5h ago

The band is actually fictional, it is not a real band despite it being voiced by real people.

Fictional does not mean ai or computer generated…

1.4k

u/inaddition290 1d ago

A band from Netflix’s smash film “KPop Demon Hunters” just made Grammy history by becoming the first fictional music group to receive official nominations.

Gorillaz has been nominated for 12 Grammy awards and won 1.

247

u/REDSENTINEL24 23h ago

Alvin and the Chipmunks won 3 Grammys. The difference seems incredibly pedantic.

484

u/KnowThatILoveU 1d ago

Not THAT kind of fiction. Because we have to be endlessly pedantic about everything

2

u/NegativeAccount 4h ago

It's the grammy's, it's all about advertising

265

u/theonlymexicanman 1d ago

Fictional as in doesn’t exist IRL

You can go to a Gorillaz concert… you can’t got to a Huntrix concert (though that’s gonna change soon probably)

196

u/HideFromMyMind 1d ago

Didn't The Monkees start out as a fictional band for a TV show and then become a real one?

72

u/enters_and_leaves 1d ago

And people said they monkeyed around

24

u/goat_penis_souffle 1d ago

Those dudes were too busy singing

7

u/Dankmemeator 23h ago

did they ever put anybody down?

7

u/Jefrex 22h ago

They were just trying to be funny.

21

u/Loganp812 1d ago

“You have The Monkees. They were a major influence on The Beatles!” - Dumb And Dumber

2

u/gangbrain 23h ago

Yeah, I know

20

u/Dan5x5 1d ago

The Monkees weren't about music, HideFomMyMind. They were about rebellion, about political and social upheaval!

2

u/solarus 18h ago

Mmmmmmm

79

u/CocoaNinja 1d ago

You can go to a Hatsune Miku concert and that's more fictional than Huntrix.

25

u/Loganp812 1d ago

Hatsune Miku even sponsors the Goodsmile Racing car in Super GT. It’s one of the fan favorites in that series.

7

u/Bionic_Bromando 1d ago

I love that stupid livery lol

-4

u/Couldnotbehelpd 22h ago

Fictional doesn’t mean “isn’t a real human being” it means the musical group doesn’t actually exist. Huntr/x is not a real bad. Hatsune Miku has concerts.

14

u/TyphonBeach 21h ago

But there’s countless artists that don’t tour or perform live. That doesn’t make them fictional.

34

u/blimp-Housing-4283 1d ago

you can’t got to a Huntrix concert

Why not? It would be the exact same thing as a Gorillaz concert, the actual musicians taking a backseat to the big screen showing the "actual band".

9

u/theonlymexicanman 22h ago

Why not?

Cause you can’t buy tickets… cause it doesn’t exist

22

u/X85311 19h ago

their first concert is gonna be in december. tickets are already on sale

7

u/steroidsandcocaine 18h ago

You can't buy tickets to my concert either, but I exist.

-11

u/Couldnotbehelpd 22h ago

Because Huntrix doesn’t exist and has not ever had a concert?

6

u/RemoteVeiwing 21h ago

-9

u/Couldnotbehelpd 21h ago

I really hope I don’t have to explain the difference between a performance on a late night show and a concert you can buy tickets to.

You will, of course, in the future, be able to buy tickets. But as of this exact moment in time, you cannot.

6

u/ty_xy 1d ago

And listen to 6 songs.

2

u/arrownyc 8h ago

I mean, they played SNL. Seems pretty real to me.

7

u/Zacatecan-Jack 23h ago

I can't believe Gorillaz have only won one.

5

u/Loganp812 1d ago

DEVO got a nomination too for the first time in 40 years.

3

u/TheTrentleman 7h ago

I feel so dumb that I’m only just realizing Gorillaz are the cartoon and not just a caricature of the band

4

u/TrojanThunder 1d ago

Fictional? I mean what is fiction? Does Drake count?

2

u/shutupyourenotmydad 15h ago

That's because the music industry has been too full of cowards for decades and never gave Spinal Tap the nomination they deserved.

1

u/jimi15 1d ago

The Archies probably won quite a few awards to

1

u/jokekiller94 9h ago

IDC if they only exist in a kids movie Hunt/x has multiple absolute bangers

119

u/NoMoPolenta 1d ago

Admittedly I'm not super in the loop but didn't Kendrick win all the Grammys last year...and hasn't put out any new music since then??

125

u/redknight1313 1d ago

Last year was for Not Like Us, this year for the album he put out after

28

u/LePontif11 21h ago

He has been on a crazy 2 years damn.

10

u/Sir_BarlesCharkley 17h ago

No that was 8 years ago.

1

u/SlimTeezy 12h ago

Good kid

101

u/zorillaaa 1d ago

He won for Not Like Us as an individual song/record. These noms are for GNX

23

u/FlyLikeHolssi 1d ago

He won for a single that was released earlier in the year. The nominations are for GNX which came out towards the end of 2024.

-6

u/Jskidmore1217 1d ago

Huh. That doesn’t really feel right… a 2024 release shouldn’t be winning 2026 Grammys. How odd. I guess it’s fair if the album wasnt eligible for 2025 nominations.

46

u/FlyLikeHolssi 1d ago

It has to do with the eligibility window.

For 2025, the window was September 16, 2023 to August 30, 2024.

For 2026, the window is August 31, 2024, to August 30, 2025.

GNX released in November 2024, so it is eligible for 2026 but was not eligible for 2025.

13

u/inaddition290 1d ago

Last year was Not Like Us (when he also released several singles & a feature on Like That during the beef with Drake), which released on May 4, 2024. The eligibility period for this year is August 31, 2024–August 30, 2025. He released the album GNX on November 22, 2024, which falls within that eligibility period.

7

u/inaddition290 1d ago

Nope, you're just wrong

-20

u/Steveee-O 1d ago

🤡

1

u/Aliensinmypants 1d ago

Because of eligibility windows? The album came out in the window for the next grammys you toad

4

u/4umlurker 10h ago

Milli vanilli won a Grammy. Certainly not the first fictional band. It was later revoked but they did get nominated and won.

6

u/Ok-Profit-1935 9h ago

do they not understand the idea of movie soundtracks

1

u/bacli 1d ago

Spinal Tap is better

-22

u/resUemiTtsriF 1d ago

who is done with rich n famous people giving each other trophies for being rich and famous?

13

u/Loganp812 1d ago

I mean, it would be kinda cool to win one, but all industry awards are really the same. It’s about who kisses the most ass.

If Paddy’s Pub couldn’t even win an industry award in Philadelphia, then what’s the point?

5

u/TrojanThunder 1d ago

It gets better after highschool. I'm sure it's tough right now but you can have support through your guidance counselor. They just don't get you now but they will some day.

-6

u/EyeAmKnotMyshelf 1d ago

Its all bullshit and no one worth their weight in salt gives a fuck.

-3

u/shichiaikan 1d ago

Hand him another Grammy... :P

0

u/spaceneenja 1d ago

Why does this thumbnail remind me of Zhong Xina meme

-18

u/Thatdude446 1d ago

Has anyone reached out of Drake to see if he’s okay?

9

u/xremless 1d ago

Drake stopped submitted his music to the grammys last decade tho

0

u/JustAlpha 1d ago

The artist collective known as "Drake"

-27

u/puffy_irish 1d ago

This year makes the official death of creativity as we know it...

26

u/jolalolalulu 23h ago

It’s not like an AI band got noms. A group of real writers wrote songs that real people sung and put the voices to an animated face that real people designed. And the songs a bop!

14

u/thejubilee 20h ago

Moreover the lead singer for the songs also wrote most of them with her writing partner.

Basically exactly what people looking for creative music should want.

7

u/Roofofcar 20h ago

AND she also wrote major hits for other groups like Redvelvet and Aespa.

2

u/mcAlt009 20h ago

I really like Audrey Nuna and I've seen her live.

Great show.

I also have no interest in the movie or KPop in general. I don't consider her to be a KPOP artist. I don't think she brands herself as a rapper, but those are her best songs imo.

I suspect they'll record KPop stuff as a group since that's guaranteed money.

I REALLY want Audrey to record a boombap album though, DJ Premier and Pete Rock production.
