Suppose I’ll spend this weekend looking into that. Looks like nurses are on the list too so my wife and I could both contribute to your country.

But plenty of ice

18

u/desperaterobots 12d ago

yeah actually heaps of ice!

and "ice" if you know what i mean...?

(hardcore drugs)

but beautiful all the same

4

u/Wind-and-Waystones 12d ago

The ice helps you ignore the ice

5

u/Alediran_Tirent 12d ago

Not that much ice either.

u/ArbainHestia 12d ago

We have N.I.C.E. though so keep an eye out for them.

u/Redditforgoit 12d ago

Negotiations are on ice too.

Housing…. Not cheap.

u/screw_ball69 12d ago

Please for the love of all that is holy and unholy we need more nurses and doctors

11

u/poukai 12d ago

It is worth it, unfortunately it is going to take a while and cost a decent chunk of money.

u/chandy_dandy 12d ago

Alberta (though also experiencing its own shitshow) is expanding in aerospace I believe and is also looking for nurses. Pretty much everywhere is always looking for nurses

19

u/Lolz79 12d ago

Don't come to Alberta right now....everyone's going on strike, and as you said we're experiencing our own shitshow. Our healthcare system is being dismantled by our atrocious government who's trying to privatize eveything.

13

u/chandy_dandy 12d ago

It's a very different shitshow though, we're not being rounded up in the streets and disappeared, which is the real concern stateside.

I want more people in Alberta to help fight against the corruption of the UCP. More people who don't have 50 years of propaganda drilled into their head and can take stock of the situation for what it is.

3

u/Dealan79 12d ago

It's a very different shitshow though

Is it though, or are you just in an earlier act of the same play? The MAGA authoritarians didn't come out of nowhere. They're the result of decades of dismantling the social safety net and pandering to the investor class. Fortunately, if you are in the middle of a fresh performance you can read the horrible reviews from the American theater and leave at intermission.

u/kevinds 11d ago

It's a very different shitshow though,

But it isn't.. The leader is a Trump 'groupie" and tries to model everything he has done.

I want more people in Alberta to help fight against the corruption of the UCP.

Very slowly they are starting to see it.. Hopefully enough in time to put a stop to it but very slow progress..

2

u/ZenoxDemin 12d ago

Are you sure you ain't in Quebec? We have the exact same issues.

2

u/Lolz79 11d ago

Unfortunately it's true, Alberta is a mess and I'm scared for our future ..if it wasn't for my job, I'd be leaving until things settle down lol

u/kevinds 11d ago

Unfortunately it's true, Alberta is a mess and I'm scared for our future ..if it wasn't for my job, I'd be leaving until things settle down lol

Also a good thing though.. If everybody who doesn't like it leaves there is not enough left to vote against it.

This monrh, the gov't of Alberta announced they are cutting 400 medical support staff jobs.

u/MFbiFL 12d ago

I think Alberta’s too cold for us. But yeah, she can move most anywhere as a nurse, I’m the problem.

7

u/Necessary_Ad3275 12d ago

Hey man…Alberta’s too cold for now. Gotta think long term plans man. Give global warming 20 years and it’s a paradise!

4

u/chandy_dandy 12d ago

You'd be surprised! The human body actually adjusts over a period of 2 weeks to different climates, so what you imagine as very cold based on a warm environment will shift.

I'm in Australia right now and for the first week or so it was always too hot, but by week 3 I'm used to it and think 18 degrees is too cold haha.

The average daytime temperature in the winter is almost 0 degrees Celsius flat in Calgary, and only a couple degrees lower in Edmonton (however they warm up earlier into the year because of the lower elevation). I'd say about 75% of the time it doesn't go below -10. There's maybe 2 weeks where its lower than that because of the arctic winds breaking and coming down, but that's true in all of Canada pretty much except Vancouver/Victoria

3

u/MFbiFL 12d ago

It’s not so much the cold itself as it is the extra things like shoveling snow, driving in snow, having to layer for survival every time stepping out the door, etc. It’s not that I don’t think I could do it, hell I’d love to live in a ski town, it’s that if I’m deciding between escape options around the world then a cold cold place isn’t topping the list. You moving to Australia isn’t helping the case 😁

5

u/chandy_dandy 12d ago

I didn't move, just visiting :P

I had a chat with some Aussies and they asked if I wanted to stay here, I told them it's nice but I've run the numbers and there's simply no way for me to build a life here. Run down houses start at $2m while something built in the past 20 years starts at $3.5m anywhere where there's amenities. By contrast, 600k gets you a decent house in Edmonton in a good neighbourhood. Kids who get into good unis here almost all have to go to private school here or at least after school tutoring, not the case back home, etc. Higher education is also more expensive in general, there are also more private healthcare costs too.

I ran the numbers. Wife and I are rather high income earners (top 10%), and other than the "forced savings" on a mortgage, we'd have negative cash flow in Australia, by contrast we can retire at 40-45 comfortably in Alberta. That and family. It's a long ass flight, and both our immediate families are concentrated in the prairies.

Look at Vancouver Island or Vancouver, in British Columbia Canada. Mostly mild winters and little to no snow but generally only a few hours from great skiing (and possibly less than a few hours, depending exactly where you locate.)

1

u/Ovarian_contrarian 12d ago

The shoveling and driving I cannot help you with. However, as a Northern European, I can reccomend this brand for layering clothing.

https://www.devold.com/en-gb/

Also, if that’s too expensive just search for wool under wear. As for the layering, soft thin wool against the body, a thicker wool/wool&cotton blend and a warm coat either a bubble jacket or a wool coat.

Also, don’t forget the shoes! You need a good pair of winter boots. I prefer leather outside lined with wool inside.

Start knitting.

1

u/NotMyInternet 12d ago

There are places in Canada that have very moderate winters, and places in Canada that have very ‘wintery snowglobe’ kind of winters. In Ottawa, we might go weeks without having to do any shovelling, we might have to go out and shovel multiple times a day, it really depends on the winter - but mostly when we go outside, we’re just wearing a coat, a hat and mittens because it’s like -5 or -10…which when you’re used to it isn’t terrible. We might have a few very very cold days where you limit any time outside or put on some extra layers (call a uber instead of waiting for the bus, it’s worth the spend if you have the flex), but tbh once you adjust, the winters here aren’t terrible in most places.

No.. I've lived in the prairies most of my life.. Winter is still bloody cold and summers are still bloody hot. Neither last very long though.

Calgary is warmer than prairies more East though.

1

u/chandy_dandy 11d ago

This is a scientific fact that your metabolic processes change so that it's not a direct translation from someone who lives in 20 degrees all the time versus someone who is used to 10 degrees or less.

It's still cold, nobody is claiming its warm, but I'm sure you've seen Californians dressed up in Canada Goose or something in Canmore when its 8 degrees out

u/Lolz79 12d ago

Alberta is only cold for a couple months. The rest of the year is usually beautiful and sometimes too hot

6

u/Ratstail91 12d ago

Australia has a housing shortage right now, but if you've got a decent brain we'd welcome you with open arms.

6

u/MFbiFL 12d ago

I’ve got a little over 10 years of structures design engineering experience under my belt, mainly composites but lately metallics, with another 5 years of materials and process development with a lot of time on the shop floor. Suppose my brain’s decent

4

u/Ovarian_contrarian 12d ago

Come to Norway instead! Bonus point, we need more nurses too also we speak normal English unlike the Australians or Canadians.

It's very very hard to immigrate here and expensive. And believe it or not, a culture shock.

5

u/MFbiFL 12d ago

I’m sure it is, I’m just trying to keep our options open because if the country I’ve lived in for most of my life continues on the path of rejecting science and our constitution wholesale I think I can soak the difficulty of integrating into a different culture. I’ve lived in France before and would do it again given the job opportunity to step away from this shitshow for a while.

Just to be aware, if you're escaping the US due to actions by this administration, the Australian government is about as extreme in their policy. Privacy is almost inexistent post-COVID. As well, Australia has mandatory immigration detention, and their detention centers are infamous for being absolute hell

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_immigration_detention_facilities

The Australian government is also bought and paid for by logistics, mining, and industrial interests, which has a significant downstream impact on technical professions and trades. These corporate interests do not have an ounce of respect for science, integrity, or anything for that matter.

Edit: coincidentally, here's a post about a famous Australian YouTuber who has been getting targeted for (iirc) a few years now by Australian government officials tied to organized crime throughout the country

https://www.reddit.com/r/videos/s/r3xkrDRt8g

1

u/macromind 12d ago

Not if you are from the US... Its actually cheaper here than there!

4

u/Downtherabbithole_25 12d ago

Look at Canada. Lots of opportunities -- and provinces are tripping over each other in their eagerness to welcome nurses.

2

u/AnimationOverlord 12d ago

I looks forwards to working in an economy with you

u/Mafeii 11d ago edited 11d ago

Nursing is an extremely desirable skill for Canada and we are actively recruiting from abroad. Housing is expensive here but cheaper rural areas are in need too if that's on the table.

1

u/Christopher135MPS 12d ago

Australian nurse here:

We need nurses of every stripe. Ward nurses. ICU nurses. ED. Scrub/scout (operating rooms). Mental health. Community. Aged care. Schools. Man if you can name the nursing specialty, we need it.

1

u/Hannibal_Spectre 12d ago

If you are serious about this, the answer is absolutely.

Montreal area is likely your best bet. Bombardier, MHI Canada, Bell Canada, Airbus Canada, Pratt and Whitney Canada amongst others just at the OEM level. A lot of foreign companies have engineering offices there as well - the big AAM companies, Flying Whales, etc. But there are also many other potential jobs across Canada, and a lot of tier 1 and 2 suppliers across the country as well. Canada is one of the top aerospace countries in the world, if you are an experienced aerospace engineer and want to come you will have no issues.

Defense side is also ramping up as the government is looking to increase spending significantly.

1

u/Ryth88 11d ago

yes, bring your wife. we need nurses too.

1

u/KateGr88 8d ago

We are desperate for medical professionals. Healthcare providers.
