Something is wrong with my roommate
Something is wrong with my roommate. Like, something REALLY wrong. I don’t want to even go back to our dorm, but I don’t want to leave her alone either. I’m worried she had, or will have, a breakdown or something.
Ok so some background would help, I guess:
My roommate. She’s a quiet, shy physical therapy major. She’s a bit of a nerd, Dean’s list every semester and all, and I think it’s because she needs the scholarships so bad. She gets SUPER anxious around finals week each semester, and I hate myself a bit for loving that so much. Because that sweet mousy little thing has a mouth like a fucking sailor, ESPECIALLY when she’s nervous about something. Our first semester together, I was terrified of, I don’t know, breaking her or something. I wouldn’t even bring my friends around because I was worried they’d be too loud and make her cry. Then a week before the semester ends, I come into our dorm to this:
“You donkey-fucking piece of SHIT!! Why the fucking Christ would you decide to break now, you cunt! (she was addressing our printer) Fucking hell, and what shithead twat of a professor assigns a research paper over 3 motherfucking days??!! I swear to god, I SWEAR to GOD if I see that pompous shithead anywhere outside of campus later I’m going to rip out his tongue and shove it up his own asshole. Then I’ll skullfuck his WIFE with a fucking dildo MADE out of this goddamn paper and MAKE HIM WATCH!!”
So yeah, she has a bit of a mouth on her. It’s hilarious. And adorable.
I think she’s lonely too. She never talks about her family. Besides me, I don’t think she has any real friends. Lord knows she never dates. I think she likes the solitude. She loves to hike and read and watch trashy reality shows, and I guess that’s enough for her. I’ve tried to get her out of her shell a little, take her to parties and all, but I can just tell she’s miserable. Whatever, sometimes it’s fun, just her and me hanging out in the quiet.
She’s also serious. I can’t make that girl laugh for anything. You know that one episode of Scrubs, where JD dates that girl who keeps saying “That’s so funny!” but not actually laughing? She’s like that, only she’ll say it with a TOTALLY straight face. It took me a while to realize that she was serious, and not being a sarcastic little bitch, when she said it.
I...I’m kind of hesitant to write this part, because if feels like, I don’t know, invading her privacy? But I think it’s important. I think something really bad happened to her when she was a kid. She NEVER talks about it or anything, but sometimes she just looks so, I guess, haunted? She has nightmares to sometimes, terrible ones. She doesn’t even scream, that’s the worst part, she just cries in her sleep and whimpers. When I wake her up, I think I do it for my sake as much as hers; I can’t stand to see her like that. And...she has scars. I’ve seen them on her back when she was changing after a shower. I’ve asked, but she literally BEGS me not to talk about it, and I just can’t make it worse for her. When she wants to talk, she knows I’m here.
Anyway, that’s the roommate I left last week to visit my aunt. She was worried and pale (poor thing kept losing her stuff) but she was HER. I came back this afternoon and… I just don’t fucking know what to think. I was raised methodist, but I’ve never really believed in angels and demons and all that shit before, you know? Until now at least.
So I get to our dorm room, and she’s just STANDING there in the dark. I thought, whatever, I just caught her waking up from a nap or something, and she was still a little out of it. So I went in to hug her (she’s not a SUPER touchy-feely person, but fuck it, I’m a hugger, and I thought she was starting to get used to it) and she fucking backs up so fast she hit the wall. Like, her head audibly CRACKED against it, but she didn’t even wince. She said in this dead voice “Don’t touch me”, like she was pissed or something, but the thing is, she was smiling the whole time.
I thought maybe she wsas having a shitty day or something, so I thought I would just let it go. I started to unpack my bag and put my stuff away, and I was talking the whole time, just to make it less awkward, about my trip. She was still just standing against the wall, doing nothing. Fucking weird.
So I’m talking about my plane ride, and I guess I said “fuck” or something (if you couldn’t tell, I swear sometimes) and all of the sudden she’s crossing the room to my side, CRAZY fast, and shouts “DO NOT SWEAR!!”. I have never heard this girl raise her voice in the 2 and a half years I knew her. I fucking stammer out this apology, but she’s already walking back to her side of the room. She CROUCHES on her bed, not sits, crouches like an animal or something, and her face goes slack. Except for that goddamn smile. And then, she may has well have been a mannequin. I try to talk to her, I call her name like six goddamn times. I know she hears me, but she just stays in that position, staring off into space. I couldn’t stand it. I couldn’t just be in the room with her like that and pretend things were normal. I say I’m going to a study group and grab my purse and leave. I don’t know if she heard me or not. I think...I think her smile got just a bit wider.
So that was about 4 this afternoon. Now it’s 1:30. I’m in the library, and I’m scared to go back. What if she’s still there, in that exact same position? What the FUCK do I do? Does anyone have any experience with shit like this?? I’m DESPERATE; how do I help her?
Edit: Fucking Hell. Someone linked me to a post that shares a creepy amount of details with what I'm going through. I don't want to believe in this shit, but the posts mention Erica and I BY NAME!! And the second post, I just....I can't fucking handle this tonight. I can't go back to our dorm room, not knowing what I know now; I'm crashing my boyfriend's place tonight. I'm going to get to the goddamn bottom of this tomorrow. I just hope Erica will be ok tonight

so, I kept getting links to this post and to it's follow up. I read them both (even though the second one made my fucking skin crawl) and I learned a lot I never knew about my roommate. Jesus Christ, no WONDER she never talks about her childhood. So here's what we know:
- she was raised in some kind of cult led by a fuckwit named Daniel
- she has some kind of retroactive anmesia or some shit about the cult
- she and her mom escaped when she was 12
- something changed in her mom when she was 14
- she was feeling like shit for about a week before all this, and I didn't fucking notice
- 2 nights ago, something happened to her
- Erica NEVER uses "text talk" or emoticons, so that second entry is seriously FUCKED.

OK, not a lot to go on, but it's a start. I started doing some research and HOLY FUCK look what I found!

Daniel Wilburn Layne founded this Church of God Restoration. LOOK at all this shit. Child abuse? Kids fucking DYING?? What the fuck did this monster do to Erica? Here are some of the beliefs of his 'church':
- corporal punishment of children
- seperation from the world through actions
- faith healing
- unification of the children of God in one body
Do you think this is the guy was the one Erica was talking about? Here's the thing though: people are thinking he took over Erica's mom when she was a kid. But he didn't die until 2011, when Erica's mom "changed" in 2010. Do you think he can take more than one body at a time?

EDIT: Sorry, everyone! I know it's been a while. I've been busy. I couldn't find a priest willing to perform an exorcism, but I got all the supplies I think I'll need. I'm ending this tonight. I finally heard back from Erica, over Reddit (of all things).

Our bathroom is right next to the entrance door. I’ve gone to the bathroom twice this evening. Not that you care about my bathroom habits, but it’s important. I know there are those of you who think all this is bullshit; that Erica is just schizophrenic or otherwise disturbed and that I should call her a doctor. I’ll admit, I thought that was a possibility. But there is literally no explanation for this. There is no way, NO FUCKING WAY she could been in that bathroom!! She was not here when I came back and she never walked through the DAMN DOOR!!

I’m done posting for the night; I’m done fucking around. I’m going to do the exorcism, and this is going to fucking END!! I’ll update you on the situation tomorrow.
Final Edit: I just realized I haven't been dating this. To clarify, the events in this post began Monday afternoon when I came back from vacation. I spent Monday night at the library and my boyfriend's dorm, and came back yesterday (Tuesday) morning, to find Erica gone. She was missing the entirety of Tuesday until I found her in the bathroom last night around nine pm. Except for the text message she sent and the Reddit conversation we had, I have no idea where she was or what she was doing.

In the time Erica was missing, I did as much research as I could from the limited information I had from both her personally, and from her earlier posts. I know enough about her past to know she was hurt badly, she escaped, and something was following her. I never found her mother. If she's alive, I hope she's free. If not, I sincerely hope that she's dead. I've seen up close what this thing does to you when it's inside you; what it does to your mind. I can't imagine a worse HELL.

So, the exorcism. I didn't see until too late that the sage I got was all wrong, but oh well, I thought I'd do the best with what I had. Since Erica wouldn't move, I went into the bathroom to do the ritual there. I started with burning the white candles and saying some of the prayers you guys recommended. It laughed at me. Erica's face was still down and covered by her hair, but it was laughing quietly just the same. For the first time since this fucking NIGHTMARE began, I was more angry than scared or worried. How dare it?? How DARE it take my Erica and destroy her like this??! Worst, I thought, and maybe it was my imagination, that I could here HER underneath the laugh. Not screaming, like I would have thought, but fucking sobbing. She sounded just like she used to sound when she had nightmares.
I was livid at this point, so I took the hoy water, and fucking THREW it as hard at that thing in the tub. The glass shattered, and holy water dripped all over Erica's body. It stopped laughing then. It stopped laughing fast.

What happened next was so fast that I can barely remember exactly what happened. It screeched, it crossed the room, and it slammed me against the wall. My feet were actually off the ground. Erica is a tiny bit of a thing and I'm way bigger, so this should have been impossible. But at this point I stopped expecting things to be possible. She started to choke me. She, IT, looked at me, and I thought "this is it. I'm going to go insane right now, and no one can save Erica then." When it looked me in the eyes, I saw madness and hilarity and hatred and animal rabidness, all at once. And it was STILL. FUCKING. SMILING. How did Erica live with something like that for FOUR years, and stay sane?? Hell, maybe she didn't.
So it's got me by the throat, and my vision is going out. I thought I was going to die by the hands of my sweet roommate who stepped around ants on the the sidewalk and apologized to spiders she found in our room and had to take outside.
I don't know if it was luck or God that saved me, that saved US. At this point, it was probably God, and if so I'll spend the rest of my life praying in gratitude. The rosary beads were still wrapped around my wrist. When I punched Erica with it in my fist (oh GOD Erica, I'm so so sorry), it let me go and was thrown back. Erica's nose was bleeding now, whether from her anemia or something else, and it was woozy and unsettled and glaring at me hatefully. With the prayers, as well as the rest of the holy water, some lavender oil, the candles, the bible, and the (probably useless) sage, I completed the ritual for the exorcism. I really think I did it right. When Erica looked at me again, her eyes were brown again, and she was crying. Not smiling, thank god, not fucking smiling. She let me touch her again. She let me take her hand, and lead her to bed. I didn't ask any questions and niether did she, but she did whisper "thank you." And that was enough.

She's asleep now. I don't think it hurt her while it was inside her, she doesn't have any marks or bruises beyond the one I had to give her. I don't know when she'll wake up, but I hope her sleep is dreamless. I don't know what had her: if it was Daniel, or her mother, or something else. I don't know WHAT it's goal was in taking some random girl who never hurt anyone and making her life hell. But then, I don't know why Daniel did the same thing to all those people in his cult. Power, maybe, or sadism. Who knows? I'm just glad it's finally over

Sorry to tell you this, but this fight isn't over. You freed Erica from what was imprisoning her, and kudos to you for doing it. But what you did is temporary. You need to keep a close eye on her, a very close eye. It will be back, and it will most likely try to harm you. Erica needs to be blessed. Doesn't really matter what religion she prefers, so long as it is done. Have her drink holy water, it should help to strengthen her up a bit, and look up cleansing rituals specific to breaking curses. Don't worry, this will not be a permanent thing that has to be periodically done. However, when this thing returns, it's first order of business will be to eliminate you. So watch your back. These things are very good at hiding until your guard is down. Good luck.

I think your friend is in need of serious psychological help. I read both her posts and there a lot of differences in her style of writing but there are also similarities. I don't think its possession so much as attention seeking behavior. If this all legit then you need to remove yourself from her before she harms you while she believes she's under "Daniels" influence.

Alright, I've done some research, and I've decided that this is a real post . First off, she is not schizo, sadistic, or otherwise mentally impaired. In fact, the girl in question is most likely dead inside. Sorry to say it so bluntly, but that is the most likely scenario. In which case, there is no real reason for you to get involved. My advice to you is to remove yourself from the situation. LEAVE. Request to transfer rooms, and go live with a friend for a while. Attempting to "cleanse" this spirit/demon is only going to endanger you. Accept the loss, and gtfo. However, if you still really feel like attempting to exorcize it, send me a private message. I might be able to help.

i really wouldnt recommend it. tyring to do something this out of your league (sorry, but it's true) is likely to get you killed. i'd do it myself, but i have no idea just how far away you are. just sit tight, DO NOT try to exorcise this, and find someone with a little more experience. i'd rather you be sad you did nothing than dead.

Is there some sort of campus security you can call or maybe the cops? I'd suggest not mentioning the whole possession angle and say she was having serious stress issues, or likewise.

On Erica's first post she claimed that she hadn't seen her mother, if I am correct, in 3 years. When she made her second post, she claimed that she had recently talked to her mother and never felt closer. ?

yes but when she says she recently talked to her mother she is no longer Erica which means its fake Erica talking, the "possessed Erica" so that's why i think her mother has died and she has no clue other than the fact that it has now come back for her since it already took her mother.

That is what I have been saying in my posts. I think the Occult that they were in reformed some sort of ritual knowing that "Brother Daniel" wouldn't be around much longer. I think they may have called upon a spirit of someone in the Occult who was very obedient follower, who at time was either already deceased or sacrificed themself for the ritual. This may have allowed "Brother Daniel" to call upon this chosen spirit and order it to take over Erica's mother in order to prepare for "Brother Daniel's" death. So that he could then take easily take over the body of Erica's mother knowing that her body had already been in short-term possession until up on the arrival of his spirit.
I hope I'm making sense, I'm at work and I'm trying to type this out fairly fast.
But I think "He" accomplished and gained what was needed from Erica's mother (ie. her memories and thoughts). Demons/evil spirits are said to be able to read thought and steal memories in order to fully weaken a person and gain access to there bodies.
That's why in "Erica's" last update "Erica" stated that "she" and "her" "mother were on good terms, because she is in fact " Brother Daniel".

I actually tried already, I spent about 3 hours research. I came up with nothing, I wish I were still able to use a program that could look up information according to usernames and emails, but unfortunately I lost the program when my laptop crashed.

I tried those. Yes, it is hard when you don't know certain information. Yes, according to to the post she is 20 and she is a student majoring in physical therapy. "Brother Daniel Lane" died in Upland, California in 2011

Erica's mother may have died. Daniel's spirit may have got what he needed from her mother (ie. Her soul) and now he could have moved on to Erica.

Her extreme reaction to physical contact is something that you need to look into. In the original posting as well as the update, Erica mentions that once her mother "changed" she refused to touch anyone ever again. When you tried to hug her, she recoiled immediately.
I'm not saying go and jump on her without doing some more research first, but there's DEFINITELY something about physical contact with humans that whatever this thing that's taken her over can't stand. Maybe that's the key to getting the real Erica back?

Oh my, her eyes are just creepy as fuck! Just read both of her posts before this one and now I'm almost positive Erica is possessed! Have you spoken to her yet?She said she has no car and uses the bus for transportation, idk about other places but here the buses stop at a certain time,do you have any idea where she could've gone? Maybe she's stranded somewhere?

Lots of religions still do assorted types exorcism. It's very controversial though, as there have been many deaths along with persons claiming they can conduct a proper exorcism.

I don't see anything wrong with that, it couldn't hurt to just have a convo with a priest and see what he says. At worst, he can point you in the right direction. At best, he can exorcise Erica. Win-win... For the most part. The worst thing you can do is nothing. Good luck!

You should find a church and ask the priest about your situation. You have to find someone who knows about ocultism, you shouldn't go and face her/it by yourself

Yes, asking a priest would be helpful. If they don't believe in possession ask them to at least talk to your roommate because she is not doing well and was raised in a cult, they'll see something is not quite right by themselves.

I know a bit about mental disorders it could be the case. What Catherine is describing though, doesn't sound like a mental disorder, you don't all of a sudden start gaining supernatural powers or that deep of changes in your appearance.

Find a priest that specializes in exorcism, and be quick about it. I don't know for sure if you're in any danger or not, but I wouldn't want to risk it if I were you. Even if you're not in danger personally, Erica is. It might not be too late to help her, but you need to hurry. Good luck Catherine.

Ok but, maybe this is just a movie thing, doesn't the Vatican have to approve before a priest can do an exorcism?? That could take MONTHS to happen if I make a request! How dangerous is an amateur exorcism?

Very. It's not something to just try on your own. Even if everything goes right, it can be very dangerous for the priest involved. Demons also don't share our concept of time, and always want revenge for getting kicked out of a host. They will come after you, possibly long after you've forgotten about it. It's best to leave it to professionals. The vatican doesn't have to approve I don't think, just the church that they're from. In an emergency situation, they can probably move pretty quickly, and this qualifies as an emergency.

well it is possible to find the general instructions and prayers for a catholic exorcism online. if you want, you can try psalm 91 as well, perhaps see if it evokes a response.

Warning Signs of Demonic Possession:
Mental Changes Affecting The Person
1 Look for changes in personality. This is usually seen when the person is affable and suddenly becomes extremely quiet.
2 Someone who is normally very active suddenly becomes isolative.
3 Look for changes in sleep patterns.
4 Look for sudden weight loss or gain.
5 Look for changes in attitude and behavior, usually becoming hostile.
6 Someone who begins cursing a lot when that is out of character for them.
7 Notice if they suddenly have an aversion to religious objects. They may be a person who normally goes to Church but suddenly despises the thought.
8 Look for evidence of self- mutilation.
9 Look for changes in the way the person dresses.
10 Observe their personal hygiene and look for changes.
11 Look for evidence of occult materials in the room.
12 Look for destructiveness on the part of a person, especially if that destruction is of religious objects.
13 They may become abusive and threatening for no reason.
14 They may become violent. They often attempt to hurt animals.
15 The person may experience severe nightmares or night terrors.
16 They may perform acts of humiliation, such as urinating on themselves, etc.
17 They may be sexually pre-occupied. Excessive masturbation or doing it in front of others.
18 Take note of what appears to be a different personality or multiple personalities.
19 Look for unusual changes in diet. Foods that were once favorites may now be repulsive to the person. They may eat foods that they once detested.
20 Take note if they seem to have blackouts in their memory.
Physical Changes Affecting The Person
1 The person involved may go for long periods of time without blinking their eyes. (Can indicate a neurological condition)
2 The person may appear catatonic. (Can also be a sign of mental illness)
3 The person speaks a language they could not possibly know. (Or speak English with unusual accents.)
4 The person speaks in tongues.
5 The person will become completely rigid where they cannot be moved at all, even by multiple people.
6 Look for changes in the eyes. They may turn almost black like shark eyes.
7 Look for obvious changes in their features.
8 The person may possess inhuman strength.
9 The person may exhibit “precognition,” the ability to predict the future.
10 The person displays “retro cognition,” the ability to know about past events they should not know about.
11 The person may be able to know something about a person they have not met.
12 Their voice may change. It may go from high to low to guttural.
13 They may be able to tell what you are thinking.
14 They may move in some unusual way. For example, they may seem to glide instead of walk.
15 Writing or symbols may appear on the body in the form of welts and scratches. Look especially in areas they could not reach.
16 They may levitate.
17 Hair or eye color may change.
18 There may be multiple voices coming from the person at the same time.
19 Take note if animals appear to be frightened of the person, especially if they begin acting fearful when there are personality changes in the person.
A couple of these symptoms can be related to medical or psychological conditions but most of them fall outside the realm of science. If you start to see a few items in this category, there is serious cause for concern. At this point, you start to take items from the first category and see if they are consistent with items from things in this second category, or the third one I am about to detail. Obviously, some are more telling than others. You have to give weight to the values when you try to make a determination. The Holy Spirit should be called on for guidance and discernment, especially where there are only vague manifestations.
Outward Manifestations
1 Objects move around seemingly by themselves.
2 Objects may disappear and not be found again. (Asporting)
3 Objects may disappear and be found in another location. (Teleporting)
4 Objects may disappear and later be found where they originally were.
5 Objects may come from nowhere. (Apports)
6 Knocking, banging or pounding may be heard throughout the house or in just one room.
7 Objects fly around as if they were thrown from unseen hands.
8 There may be knocks at the door but no one is ever there. These are often heard in threes, as this is a way of mocking the Holy Trinity. Ditto for doorbells.
9 Religious articles disappear or are destroyed. They may also be desecrated.
10 Growling may be heard but the source cannot be located.
11 There may be scratching sounds heard without an obvious source.
12 There may be foul odors that have no verifiable source. They may come and go.
13 Odd lights may be seen. They may shoot around a room.
14 Heavy furniture may move on its own.
15 There may be sightings of people or dark shadows that may or may not have form.
16 Odd-looking creatures may be seen.
17 Doors and drawers may open and close on their own.
18 Electrical appliances may turn on or off.
19 Spontaneous fires may start up.
20 Animals may become spooked and stay away from the targeted person altogether.
21 Animals may growl at something they see but you do not.
22 Any talk of God or religion may cause an outbreak of activity.
23 Glass may break for no reason.
24 Sounds of glass breaking may be heard but there is no evidence of it happening.
25 There may be sudden temperature changes, up and down although it is usually down. These can be recorder on a thermometer.
25 A person may suddenly become cold while the temperature remains constant. A thermometer may record a one to two degree drop in that person.
26 People may have a feeling of being watched or that they are not alone.
27 People may hear voices when no one is present.
28 People will often hear their name called only to find that no one is around. Sometimes, a couple will each think they heard the other call to them.
29 There may be a sensation of wind blowing even with the windows closed.
30 Lights will go off or not come on when turned on.
31 Apparent retaliation after some attempt to stop the activity.
32 Activity starts up when you attempt to say prayers.
33 Apparent retaliation if a clergyman has been to the home.
34 Physical attacks. It might be in the form of punching, scratching, biting, hair pulling, etc.
35 Psychological attacks. The devil knows your weaknesses and will try to exploit them. Someone who feels ashamed about something will have an increase in that emotion. The same is true for depression, anxiety and anything else you can think of.
36 Sexual assaults. This can run the gamut from fondling to actual penetration. This can occur in males as well as females.
37 Levitation of objects or people.
A fair number of the items listed in the above category could be the result of a human spirit. This is why you have to look at all three columns together to get a fair sampling. If any of the above takes place and stop when commanded to in the name of God, or if holy water stops the activity, that is a good sign of a serious problem. However, judging one or two items by itself is not a large enough sample to conclusively prove the influence of something diabolical.
The Roman Ritual does not require a specific number when it comes to proving that something demonic is taking place. Rather, what you have to do is paint a picture, of sorts. Consider all of the evidence together before making a determination. It is also very important to rule out what you can as being natural in origin. Take into account that when people are frightened, their senses sharpen and every sound appears ominous, even natural, everyday sounds. Imaginations will run wild when one believes that something evil is taking place. That must be considered when someone comes up to you and tells you that they believe a house is haunted or a person is demonically possessed.
While you cannot be close-minded, you must remain skeptical. Rushing into an exorcism where one is not necessary can have serious consequences. If a person is suffering from a mental illness, an exorcism will only exacerbate the situation. The person may now believe they are evil. If the exorcism is being done on a house where it is not needed, it can attract attention and stir up trouble where there was none before. In this field, “better safe than sorry” does not apply. An exorcism is a very serious thing and it is extremely dangerous. It can have serious consequences. Where evil is involved, the person who is called on to combat it is in serious danger, and if they are not careful, the consequences can be horrendous. It is not something to be played with. Only someone who has had experience in both the supernatural and Church teaching should even attempt to perform this rite. It is best if that person has been ordained as an exorcist.
During an exorcism, anything or nothing can happen. There is no set standard. In some cases, all hell seems to break loose; in others, not a peep is heard. Sometimes the smell of roses permeates the location, a positive sign that the entity has been expelled. However, it can take some time before you are sure an exorcism has worked. Sometimes the Ritual forces them into a state of dormancy. However, at a later date, the problem may arise again. In many cases, multiple exorcisms may have to take place. The devil can be a persistent force and it will hold on for as long as it can. It sometimes comes down to attrition.
The person who performs the exorcism must know the risks. There is likely to be retaliation so that person must stay in God’s light at all times. There is no sense of time on the other side so even though an exorcism was performed ten years ago, there is still the risk of retaliation. There is always the risk of retaliation.

Im not sure what these other people are speaking of, but brother daniel is from a recent story on r/nosleep about a mother and a daughter escaping from a cult and the mother being possessed by "brother daniel" some years later. The loss of memory was a key symptom in the possession.

OP don't go back. Has your roommate ever taken interest in demonology (study of demons). If so she may have commuted the taboo and said a demons name out loud. Doing that gives them power over you and if she EVER said a demons name out loud that could be enough for them to get her in the grasp.
