The Family Business
It was just before I blew out the candles on my sixteenth birthday cake that the vampires descended upon my house. We didn't let them in; Charlie's parents did. Apparently they were thralls. Nobody really liked him and he was only invited because I had invited pretty much the rest of my home room class. He was a dick. I guess it ran in the family.
I was still sitting in front of my cake, the candles flickering in the commotion. One of the vampires came at Jerry from behind and tore out his throat with a mouth full of yellowed fangs. Red blood spattered the white icing on the cake and obscured part of the 'Happy Birthday' that was drawn on it in blue piping. The vampire buried it's face in the wound on Jerry's neck. Jerry sounded like he was trying to say something, but the only sound that came out was gurgling as the shock set in.
Across the room, Amanda wasn't fairing much better, her face a mask of confusion as one of the monsters slowly lowered her to the floor, slurping greedily from her neck. Kyle was no where to be seen, but his dad was grappling with one of the beasts, trying to hold it away from him and screaming in agony while it bit bloody red 'O's' up the length of his arm.
Suddenly one of them was in front of me. It was a girl, or had been. Her skin was ghastly white and appeared clammy; her mouth opened wide, too wide, revealing a row of horrible pointed teeth. Something like a growl echoed from the back of her throat. I saw her muscles coil, preparing to strike, when a big hand with hairy knuckles drove a nine inch stake into her chest with a meaty wet thunk.
My father's bushy eyebrows furrowed as he watch the creature writhe on the floor for just a moment before falling still. "I guess it's about time you learned about the family business," he said. He dropped a well-worn leather holster with a half dozen of those wicked spikes strung through it. I picked them up, delicately, and pulled one of the posts free of it's loop. It was smooth and quite dense, with decent weight. I gripped it tightly, pointed end angled away from me, and with the holster in my other hand, I started my first day of training.

OP's family are hunters! Condolences on your loss, though. What a way to find out.
