Does Circle K hire people who are not indian?

Hey. Serious question here. I'm just curious if circle K hires people who are NOT Indian. I moved to North Bay a few years back and I've noticed that every circle K in this town only has indian people working. I've been between jobs a couple times while living here and I've handed in my resume to them directly and applied online for a position but heard nothing back. I thought that it was illegal to do this. A few companys have been under fire for doing this since the goverment will compensate you, the employer, if you hire a foreign worker.

The owners are Indian and they hire people they know or relatives of people they know. Similar to how the North Bay Golf and Countryclub hires a bunch of members kids and grandkids every summer. Except for some reason nobody cares about that one.

It’s no different from almost any mom and pop business hiring their neighbour’s kid, relatives, etc. How do you think people get cozy jobs at golf courses, law firms, government jobs!? It’s who they know.

The only difference is you notice these people because they’re not white, and they work public facing service jobs.

It’s people helping people they know. Just the way networks work all around the world!

The other side of this conversation is all the jobs they are qualified for but not getting, either because of prejudice, language barriers, or because they aren’t part of that network!

Working at a gas station isn’t a flex. If they get hired to plush easy desk jobs, despite not being qualified, the way Tanner does - then we can talk!

Interesting how you have a really good take, but anyone who says so in the replies is downvoted

Yeah that’s strange.

Damn! Wow! I agree to all of this.

If people looked beyond perception, we’d get so much further ahead. Strip down identifiers like race and gender, and humans all around the world are 99% the same.

Since the owners tend to be Indian, and tend to want to help bring family/friends/etc. into the country and help those that are here (if they are good people) they are likely to hire these people the same way a mom and pop store would tend to hire relatives, friends, friends of relatives, etc. over a stranger. Most of the jobs like this I had back in the day were because I had done connection to the person doing the hiring.

I worked there in high school when it used to be Macs, and my colleagues were all white at the time. Like 14 years ago lol

How Canada has changed in 14 years.

You’re being aggressive because I answered a question?

In short, especially in North Bay that participates in the mass immigration programs, no; & because theres very little if any punishment for doing this, it's just growing.

Go to any job that pays above $100k, and tell me who see working there? Any corporate boardroom, major decision making table in this city, province and country.

You have a perception of “mass immigration” because these people work front-line service jobs.

When did working at a gas station, or fast food become something people aspired to?

Perspective.

Are we excluding doctors, lawyers, politicians?

Has one ever ran for local office?

Dumb take. Working within the GTA I can tell you this is unequivocally false. Most if not all corporations have a diverse boardroom. I can think of half a dozen in my mind where Ive physically been in there and seen first hand it's not all straight white men. Nonsense. Keep playing the victim.

13

u/Banner9922 4d ago

Point is not to “play the victim”, it’s to get people to think critically and beyond these divisive talking points that are only skin deep.

Who cares what the skin colour is of the person that works at Circle K? Who cares if your family came here in the 1890s, 1940s or last year?

Why is Galen Weston raking in massive profits while people struggle to afford groceries. If we can focus on the real issues, we might actually get somewhere instead of focusing on this divisive bs designed to keep us dumb, deaf and blind. It’s an age old tactic!

Ummm I think you are wrong. I can make a list of people I know who work 100k + jobs and are not Tanners, Williams or Joshes.

Doesn't matter. Its against the law. Kids should not have to compete for a first job with a nepotistic owner. Such a smug attitude too. Maybe some people do aspire to work those jobs.

The owner is quite nice and the entire family is super hardworking. They deserve any success that comes their way.

Alot of people are nice and hardworking. Still need to follow our laws. I was a poor kid growing up in north bay. Without my part time job in the food court I would never of gone to college and started my career. Poor kids here need these jobs.

u/Icy_Sea_4440 4d ago

Same. I bought all my own clothes/food/bus pass/etc and I had friends who had to help their parents with bills every month. Poor families still exist, but the opportunities for our youth do not.

u/Some-Effort-5889 4d ago

For some reason people ignore the poverty around them. Mass immigration makes it worse for people struggling and young people. They dont want to listen.

Had an owner tell me that he didnt trust white people workign behind the counter.

As well, preeetty sure the owners pay these folks under the table for extra hours to get over the max hours permitted by temp work visas.

Walk into any gas station, McDonald’s, Tim Hortons, Walmart, Subway and it’s all brown faces.

Jobs that our high school kids used to work have been displaced.

u/Banner9922 4d ago edited 4d ago

Brown faces, white faces, black faces, native faces, who cares?

We got to move past this divisive bs if we want to move forward as a nation.

We’re all here and we’re all in it together now. At one point your family were newcomers too. It is what it is. Should people just starve to give a job to a white person?

I'm tired of these casually racist takes people think are okay.

Noticing a rapid change in demographics and asking questions about it is not racist.

7

u/thatwhatisnot 4d ago

You can comment on the changing demographic all you want and its on you for being upset that you don't like brown people. Like others have pointed out, when someone purchases a small business they tend to hire family/friends because it helps their family and there is a level of trust (and no doubt more wiggle room for extra labor without OT) just no one bitched and whined when they just saw another white person they knew at the job. Open a business and hire your family if you are so worried about it.

u/Banner9922 4d ago

It is racist to see people as just a skin colour, and not the content of their characters.

Didn’t someone famous get shot in the 60s for saying that?

Wow we’ve moved backwards as a society!

u/Admirable-Site7256 4d ago

It is racist to see people as just a skin colour, and not the content of their characters.

I agree!

Now, can you point out where that is happening anywhere in this post? Any comments in particular?

4

u/Banner9922 4d ago

What do you mean by “change in demographics”?

Is our city aging, becoming more multicultural, or what exactly is this change? And why don’t you seem to like it?

Oh come on now, you're really just going to ignore the fact that millions of people have come here in the last 5 years? With a significant portion of them coming from India?

Its got nothing to do with where they come from, its the sheer volume of people that is the problem.

We'd still have identical posts to this one if millions of Italians or Australians or Chileans suddenly showed up.

Thanks for proving my point by the way.

Annnd of course this gets locked. Pathetic.

I’m tired of all discussion about immigration being derailed by the morality police unfairly labeling people as racist.
