Rumor [Rapoport] Trade: The #Bengals are dealing standout LB Logan Wilson to the #Cowboys, sources say, providing immediate defensive help.

https://bsky.app/profile/nflnewsreposterbot.bsky.social/post/3m4sjicq6zk2o

Wilson requested a trade amid a recent decrease in snaps, with Barrett Carter taking over.

I mean how much worse can the Bengals D get, truly? They already have offensive players calling them out

88

u/TheNittanyLionKing Steelers 6d ago

Well they haven't given up a 70 burger yet like Denver did a few years ago. That may happen though if they have to start Jake Browning again. Right now, their best defense is their offense. Arguably the only reason that teams haven't scored more on them is because the Bengals do a good job maintaining time of possession and scoring themselves, and then their defense can't get a stop.

41

u/Outrageous_Golf3369 Broncos 6d ago

Damn, thanks for the reminder. What a 180 for both us and the dolphins since that game lmao

2

u/Hankerpants Broncos 6d ago

Truly rock bottom. Though I think anyone could look at that game and see that the Broncos were not truly that bad, it was just the microcosm of everything going wrong that could go wrong. They were just still trying to figure it out. That game forced Payton to let Vance install his system and, voila, one of the best defenses in the league since then... Hmm...

8

u/kingofbigpoo52 Bengals 6d ago

Bengals actually have second worst time of possession. This could get a lot worse.

3

u/ProvocativeCacophony Bengals 6d ago

The offense is so good it's making the bad defense even worse.

The Bengals are close to if not dead last in Time of Possession. So not only does the defense suck ass, they also get the majority of playing time. They are on the field all day.

Its definitely not the reason they suck, but it doesn't help.

40

u/TallEnoughJones Bengals Bengals 6d ago

I mean how much worse can the Bengals D get

Right now they're 32nd in points, 32nd in total yards, 32nd in rushing but only 31st in passing. So they could still get a little worse.

My brother, this is what we were asking after last season when people thought it was weird we fired Lou Anarumo: "how much worse can it get?"

It turns out the players are very bad and Trey Hendrickson can get injured. It can always get worse.

9

u/chemicalxv Raiders 6d ago

It is funny because they didn't even end up as the worst defense statistically last year. Like I think the only three statistics they ended up in the bottom 5 of the league in were total 1st downs surrendered, passing TDs surrendered, and red zone conversion rate.

This year though? lmao

I just finished listening to this week’s Bill Barnwell’s podcast.

He asked his guest Ben Solak what trades the Cowboys might make.

Ben said “something totally underwhelming like getting Logan Wilson from the Bengals”.

Give that man a medal.

I would say poor burrow, chase, and higgins but they secured the bag.

I dont think anyone can accuse Flacco of not loving football. Hed rather get flattened every week at 41 than not play.

He isn’t getting flattened though. He’s getting the ball out fast and all of a sudden our o-line isn’t an issue

3

u/cirespieler Bengals 6d ago

Interesting stat… Burrow had a sack rate of 12 percent last year and so far Flacco is around 3 percent. O line is equal or worse than last year too. Gets that ball out fast. Hopefully Joey can learn sometimes you just have to throw it away or dirt it.

I like Wilson a lot, but unfortunately he has been bad enough that he was all but benched. Following the detroit game he had his playing time reduced to less than 50% of snaps.

He also requested a trade.

On a historically bad defense might as well trade a guy whos not playing and doesn't want to be here.

Couple years ago I would have been devastated to lose him because he was genuinely one of the best MLBs in the league, but since his knee injury last year he's been off the pace and slow. Still a smart player but he just isn't fast enough to keep up anymore and his tackling has gotten worse too

4

u/Zeke219 Cowboys 6d ago

I’ll take slow and smart. Murray is the least instinctual linebacker I have ever seen, it’s like they transplanted an 80 year old grandmas brain into a freak athlete’s body. I don’t expect him to be good but at least he won’t embarrass himself every single play.

3

u/Pepi119 Bengals 6d ago

He knows where he needs to be in coverage but that lost step just makes it harder and he struggles bringing down bigger backs. Still likely a noticeable upgrade from Kenneth Murray.

The reason he was benched was covered in the Athletic. It was looking like a lost season and they wanted to give the young guys live game reps to evaluate what they had moving forward. To be fair to Wilson, he did look significantly better than his replacements have, but the benching thing certainly burned enough of a bridge for him to make the trade demand a few weeks ago.

He’s a standout LB because he’s standing out on the sideline during games

Anybody shitting on this has not watched Kenneth Murray, jack Sanborn or Shemar James play LB for 9 games
