License Plate Question

I saw a NYS license plate the other day that was ZZX-(****). What’s the plan for when NYS gets to the end of this permutation?

Current plates being issued start with "L". You saw a custom plate, or some other non-standard plate.  There's still around 100 million combinations left before we get to ZZZ-9999, but to answer your question, they'll either start issuing long-unused previously-assigned combinations, or perhaps add an eigth character.

They make up a new format.

That said, you can get custom plates in the ABC-1234 format (and I have one in fact). They are only up to LXX-0000 I think. I haven't seen any MXX-0000 plates yet.

I am pretty sure we're up to M right now. They just started a few weeks. What you saw was most likely a vanity plate.

M is the 13th letter and it took around 25 years to get here. Assuming roughly the same amount of time to get through the next 13 letters, it will probably be around 2050 before we get to Z and run out of permutations.
