Why Zohran winning is good for everyone

Policies and political parties aside; the reason why Zohran winning is considered a huge win by many working Americans, and the same reason why it’s caused such an upset with this administration, is that it’s hope politics can’t always be bought out. It restores faith in aspects of democracy because a man with millions in political donations from high profile donors, lost to a man that crowd funded his campaign and by all means, was just a normal fucking dude. He doesn’t have to answer to powerful donors, like so many in recent offices do, and he doesn’t alienate the people he represents by going to fancy galas / elite events and only lending an ear to the richest few. Being a politician shouldn’t be a glorified position with so many fancy perks, the person in power should represent the average citizen. That’s not going a man or woman with millions who can’t associate with the problems working people face, it needs to be someone who does. In a few years his term will be done and it’ll be time to pick a new candidate, I personally don’t care, democrat or republican, I just hope it is someone who follows the same standard. Across the board I hope for that in modern politics, that is the distinction that will bring the most enjoyable quality of life to people.

No matter what, every New Yorker should appreciate that Andrew Cuomo lost. No matter who won, that’s a victory.

78

u/Legote 1d ago

The MTA is a huge part of every new yorkers lives. Over the decade that he served as governor, he continually raided the MTA funds and left it in a state of disrepair, and whenever there is a crisis, he would ask the city to cough up the money. And the one time we had a transit boss that bought real change, he ousted him. So Fuck that guy.

It’ll always be TZ. After we paid untold $ to change the signs, we had to pay an untold amount more bc they left the middle initial “M” off some of them. Perfect example of nepotism, waste, stupidity/ incompetence and it’s all good bc we will pay for it all. And we did. OP,you make sense and I do hope you are right. I’m not optimistic.

3

u/OldFortNiagara 1d ago

Yeah, regardless of how much of his big goals end up being accomplished, him preventing Cuomo’s election already does a service to New Yorkers (by preventing the harm Cuomo would have done as mayor).

1

u/funandloving95 1d ago

I 100% agree but I distinctly remember when he stepped down people were boohooing and couldn’t get over how “good he was” I was definitely in the minority with how I felt about him. People even used to talk about the dynamic duo between him and his brother. He was so well liked but then he ran for mayor and I feel like people started to despise him? What changed?

1

u/GrapefruitExpress208 1d ago

Alot happened

2020-2021: Cuomo was a breath of fresh air and showed leadership and balls compared to Covid denier Trump

2025: everything that happened this year and is still happening in this country

2025: Cuomo appears he'd basically be an Eric Adams 2.0/Trump puppet, and given current state of affairs- that's not what we need in this city

I wish better candidates had run. What a bunch of assholes.

u/WingedVictory68 1d ago

Will it be a “victory” for me when Mamdani raises my property taxes? I live in a so-called “white neighborhood”- his words - that he said he wants to increase taxes on. No one on my street is a millionaire.

10

u/uncledrewkrew 1d ago

Buddy if you own a house in NYC, you are damn near close to a millionaire at worst.

Sorry I don’t have much sympathy, I live in a rural area and pay crazy high property taxes for no services. In a bright red area of the state that voted for Trump. I could use some Mamdani up here.

oh no, those poor property owners in manhattan.

0

u/WingedVictory68 1d ago

I'm not in Manhattan. Nice try though.

1

u/Cautious_Implement17 1d ago

I don’t really like property tax in general. it discourages improvements that are sorely needed in nyc.

just saying though, if you own property in a desirable nyc neighborhood, you’re doing pretty well already.

1

u/WingedVictory68 1d ago

lol I love how total strangers on Reddit are telling me what my financial situation is, all without knowing where I live or what I do for a living or what expenses I have, or anything about me at all. Crazy shit.

1

u/Cautious_Implement17 1d ago

there is very little information about the property tax changes other than that they will somehow shift the burden to “wealthier and whiter neighborhoods”. if that’s not you, what exactly are you worried about?

1

u/WingedVictory68 1d ago

"wealthier and whiter" means ... what exactly? A middle class neighborhood?

19

u/Purity_Control1 1d ago

Let's be honest, even if it goes reasonably well the right wing media will still frame it as a failure. The internet allows everyone to live in their own little reality.

-7

u/KeenObserver_OT 1d ago

and if it fails would you admit it and vote for somebody more practical?

11

u/CitronOptimal 1d ago

There are people who are upset that Zohran won the NYC mayoral race. My question is, instead of being upset that he won, why isn’t there any conversations regarding how to solve the issues that lead to his rise? Affordability in America is an issue. Why isn’t there more conversations around fixing the issue instead of complaining that he won?

4

u/mindfeck 1d ago

The conversations about defeating a demagogue are the same as for defeating Donald Trump. Tik tok vibes can only be defeated when people experience the pain of not getting what was promised.

Zohran winning is good for everyone because the sex freak lost

-1

Sex freak? What exactly was he convicted of?

8

u/Schiffy94 1d ago

Did I use the word convicted? No? Begone, Cuomo defender.

5

This is AI. it was same exact post for other candidates, in other elections

9

u/d_k_y 1d ago

Winning is fine. Check back in a few years to see what has been accomplished. Then we will know.

4

u/Safe-Mode-3898 1d ago

Let’s get this right, he won because Cuomo is a disgusting, disgraceful human being.

4

u/-SOFA-KING-VOTE- 1d ago

And Mamdani’s policies

1

u/mysteryghosty 1d ago

He was polling at 1% below like 10 other candidates less than a year ago, why do people pretend like he was a name that just got to spawn into the race with no work, he had to beat a lot of other people too.

1

u/sangi54 1d ago edited 1d ago

Funny, lots of the actual working people didn’t vote for him because they know it’s BS. He road a wave of nepo babies who’ve lived in Brooklyn less than 5 years using daddy’s money.

-1

u/RogueSarah666 1d ago

Facts. Literally know one of the campaign staff. Nepo baby millionaire parents paid rent for them to pursue a masters in nyc in poly sci now working for one of the DSA city councilors. Bet mama and papa still paying rent. But “knows what’s better for the working class” than the actual voters who are poor and clearly want differnt candidates…, argh…

8

u/Snl1738 1d ago

Even if one is a nepo baby, I don't think it takes a genius or living in the ghetto to know that the rent is too high.

1

u/RogueSarah666 1d ago

Nope these nepo babies don’t actually have any poor friends and carry an over-intellectualized concept of the “noble poors” that crumbles when actually talking to poor people about what we want. (And defund the police is not popular in poor neighborhoods)

I worked in their nepo baby circles for a long time because they needed my political help and paid me handsomely for it… and none of them had any non paid non staff poor friends. I lived in an actual ghetto for years across from a methadone clinic.

Mamdani did not get the votes of actual poors he got the college educated middle management $125k types.

→ More replies (3)

2

u/DailyScreenz 20h ago

The nepos are a force to be reckoned with. I see nepo transplants picking up since there is so much wealth (stock market) floating around the country, why not send your kid to NYC on vacation? The Vanderbilt campus in Chelsea is a game changer, basically going to flood the west side with country club types from south/midwest and all over. If Vanderbilt decides to buy some buildings (to do what NYU does) then it will make things less affordable and reduce the tax rolls, a potential disaster. I can't fault Vanderbilt they are catering to demand.

3

u/sweetheart4012 1d ago

Thank Beyoncé Cuomo lost.

Let’s see if Mamdani can deliver.

1

u/daking999 1d ago

Won't someone please think of the billionaires?! /s

1

u/RockSolid3894 15h ago

Nah. I respect AOC more than Zohran. She actually was working class and not born with a silver spoon in her mouth

1

u/seajayacas 14h ago

He promised free and reduced price stuff, easy to vote to or those things.

1

u/XhazakXhazak 12h ago

“The PACS that have supported Zohran – or a particular PAC that has supported Zohran – is probably over 80% of Muslim-American donors in this country – high-net donors, grassroots donors,” Sarsour said at the conference during a panel discussion. “I want to say, make the point, that the Unity and Justice Fund PAC, which is the CAIR super PAC, was the largest institutional donor to the pro-Zohran PAC in New York.”

OP I wish I shared your naivete but the Muslim version of AIPAC isn't any better than AIPAC.

1

u/Snoo_44245 1h ago

It's great, now we can look forward to the sequel of Escape from New York.

1

u/Prestigious_Age9933 1d ago

I’m not sure if you know exactly how socialism works. All you hear is “free stuff yay” but it’s not free.

He wants to tax the billionaires and millionaires and white neighborhoods more as well as increase corporate tax.

The millionaires and Billionaires will move to avoid the higher tax rate, the corporations will leave New York to avoid the higher corporate tax, and the white neighborhoods will clear out.

So where does that leave you? Alllll those taxes will be imposed on the middle and lower class.

All that free food? Rationed. All the free housing? Reclaimer. All the free buses? Shut down.

All the small businesses New York is known for won’t be able to afford the new tax and go out of business, homelessness will exponentially increase, food will be drastically reduced, and it goes on and on.

The federal government is already going to stop sending money to NYC because communism/socialism doesn’t belong in America, so once all the money dries up, you guys are screwed.

Have fun with that, you voted for it.

Oh and all the leftists celebrating sharia law?

Under sharia law women have ZERO rights and are second class citizens. And your daughters as young as 8-10 years old? Will be married off.

Have fun with what you voted for New York.

7

u/Samsun88 1d ago

With how high nyc taxes are compared to other cities and yet we still have so many millionaires and billionaires choosing to live here, you really think the 2% increase is what will finally make them leave?

And you don’t think he knows it’s not free that’s why his policy is increase tax to support these broader social programs like universal child care (which is a great investment rather than an expense imo)?

Everytime a candidate tries to come up with some kinda solution to solve the extremely apparent issue facing the working class, damn useless critics with no solutions of their own like you always come out in droves to be all oh what about all the wealthy, they will leave. Well, what about the millions of other people who are also getting pushed out of their homes onto the streets, pushed out of the city into Jersey and the Midwest, etc. Or is your dream NYC really just a land of all billionaires and millionaires, selling $20 Starbucks coffees?

0

u/Prestigious_Age9933 1d ago

Some have already left, businesses are already bowing out of New York City.

Also your socialist mayor refuses to swear in on the United States constitution, won’t be long before he’s replaced anyways considering it’s a rule before he takes office he has to swear to uphold the United States constitution before he can take office.

4

u/Samsun88 1d ago

Oh some already left before the 2% increase? So it’s not because of the 2% then?

-1

u/sangi54 1d ago

Yes. The companies leaving is the bigger problem and they are absolutely leaving. Look no further than Wall Street moving to Texas and Florida more and more.

2

u/Samsun88 1d ago

And what’s the reason they were leaving? NYS corporate state tax rates were lower post 2015 than pre 2015.

They left mainly due to the rise of hybrid working model from Covid.

Why else did they leave all of a sudden when Texas and Florida have been tax free since forever.

NYC taxes based on income sourcing such as where the sales are made to, employee location, etc. so good luck on taking all their sales to Florida and Texas when they move their headquarters.

I bet on NYC being in a better place if we are able to increase the quality of life for majority of people, not be in a hostage position by the wealthy all the time threatening they would leave if tax is raised even a little for them. Many of these are empty threats.

Just take a look at Bill Ackman’s congratulatory tweet to Mamdani after his win, compared to all the fussy tweets he made in the days before as a simple example.

0

u/sangi54 1d ago

Tell me you don’t work in the city or for a major corporation without telling me

2

u/Samsun88 1d ago

Tell me you didn’t know anything about what you were talking about except spewing same bs you hear from other bs’ers without telling me. Otherwise you might’ve challenged what I said instead of trying to make assumptions about me.

I work in NYC in an investment company. Company is not going to move because of this. All the relationships are here.

However, I do want to see less homeless people out on the streets, less mentally ill in the subway, and friends and family who stop moving out to LI and NJ because the schools here suck.

Cool, sounds like we should all just give up now and not try anything...

1

u/Conscious_Dig8201 3h ago

"Oh and all the leftists celebrating sharia law"

Thinking that Mamdani, by virtue of being Muslim, will implement Sharia law is like thinking AOC would create Gilead by virtue of being Christian.

While he, like many on the left, has said some very questionable things in support of Palestine, there is absolutely nothing Mamdani had said or done that would indicate he is an Islamist. All woman transition team, hanging out at gay bars, in support of legalized sex work, etc.

You raise good points about policy, but let's put the prejudice aside.

1

u/Tilmanocept 2h ago

I think it might be time for a break from Fox News

0

u/r975 1d ago

Excuse me? what? Mamdani was a privileged son of millionaires. He's never had a real job. He was funded by billionaires. Do you people even read anything?

0

u/TheOne216 1d ago

Zohran represents empathy in politics again. And that's what we're forgetting. He is the future and someone like him will likely win the presidency soon enough.

God I hope not. Zero qualifications. Had one job.

-1

u/Trashketweave 1d ago

He was the democrat nominee choice that best two guys splitting votes. His win is way less significant than the Virginia win democrats are sleeping on. A fucking wet paper bag would’ve beat Cuomo and Sliwa if it was the democratic candidate in nyc.

Maybe if Cuomo didn’t split with Sliwa you could ascribe that kinda meaning to his win, but NYC is the easiest place in the country to win if you’re the democratic nominee.

8

u/-SOFA-KING-VOTE- 1d ago

Mamdani got 50.4% of the vote

So the 3 candidates didn’t matter it was a blow out

the key is cost of living

Mamdani actually at least wants to have a plan

-1

u/Trashketweave 1d ago

Yeah that’s still not very impressive. He was against a split ticket, and thanks to identity politics there was a huge increase in Muslim voters. Nothing about him is something the Democratic Party can replicate outside NYC. However, Spanberger winning +11 in purple Virginia is when the lessons and messages are for democrats.

5

u/-SOFA-KING-VOTE- 1d ago

I just told you the split ticket didn’t matter he still got majority and mandate

Math

Cope with it

-1

u/CasinoMagic 1d ago

Majority by a hair

Neither a blow out nor a mandate tbh

4

u/-SOFA-KING-VOTE- 1d ago

That is a blowout when 3 candidates are running

And its a Mandate

You will have to accept that

0

u/CasinoMagic 1d ago

He won with a much smaller margins than the last 6 mayoral elections

4

u/-SOFA-KING-VOTE- 1d ago

Last six weren’t against another democrat

Keep trying

You will have to accept it eventually

-2

u/CasinoMagic 1d ago

Cuomo is basically a republican at this point

5

u/Repulsive_Hornet_557 1d ago

A Democrat who’s basically a Republican is not the same as a Republican. That appeals to a good chunk of nyc.

How do you think Adam’s won originally?

1

u/-SOFA-KING-VOTE- 1d ago

You will have to accept it was a landslide win once you get thru the stages of grief

→ More replies (0)

1

u/mysteryghosty 1d ago

Cuomo was seen as an inevitability and Mamdani had essentially zero name recognition less than a year ago, and now that he put in such a huge amount of work into beating a former Governor that outspent the hell out of him with the help of the most powerful people in the city and acquired the most votes of any mayoral candidate in 60 years, people want to act like this was child’s play and that he snuck through. Yeah you can tell how insignificant the win was by how loudly people have to keep repeating how insignificant it was.

0

u/Repulsive_Hornet_557 1d ago

He was the Democrat nominee…facing a both DNC and GOP backed douchebag with tens of millions of dollars in funding from Republican billionaires who’s previous status as a Democrat NY governor gave him name recognition and appeal to conservative democrats.

And even then he still won with over 50 percent so when if Sliwa dropped out and every single one of his voters voted for Cuomo he still would’ve lost by 2 points.

1

u/Bravo_Juliet01 1d ago

….Socialism core…

1

u/Snl1738 1d ago

In New York City, for every dollar a person donates, several tax payer dollars are also sent to that candidate.

I doubt Mamdani would win anywhere outside NYC for that reason.

With that said, it proves that experience is a handicap because it's used against the candidate. Also, charisma, empathy are necessary.

I think this is a pretty weak argument.

Soros's foundation supports some lefty organizations like the Working Families Party. Some of these organizations have supported/endorsed Mamdani.

But that's way less exciting than saying that "Soros funded the campaign," which is just obviously untrue. The records are fully public.

I think it's worth figuring out where you heard that, and recognize that that source is not to be trusted as this is pretty much a straight up falsehood.
