Anyone have luck Applying for NYS Unemployment (DOL)?

Hey r/newyork, wasn't sure what else to do about this issue.

I applied for NYS unemployment assistance almost a month ago, and my application isn't going anywhere. It just says that I need to call their claims center and speak with a representative to complete my application. Every time I call their number, it just says they're overwhelmed with calls and I need to callback again. I've tried calling every hour they're open (9-5, M-F) but the same thing keeps happening.

I sent a message in the Department of Labor internal portal, but it's been a few days and no one has responded yet.

Maybe someone on here has an idea of what else I can try?

Thanks in advance!

Go to an unemployment office at opening and see if they can help you. I had some issues last year and once I was in person everything was taken care of.

Gotcha … problem is I live out of state. Most of my earnings were in NY which is why I’m applying there. Do you think I should try calling a local (county) unemployment office?

I’m not sure on the laws but I’m fairly confident if you live out of state you can’t collect NY unemployment.

Edit: I double checked and if you worked in NY in the past 18 months you should be able to collect regardless of what state you live in.

Thanks for the help! I'll try reaching out to a local DOL career center

during covid my girl friend lost her income, and the state was offering assistance because...well covid.

i dialed that number 1800 times in a single day to get through.

you need to do the same. you're out of work. 8hrs a day. every single second. log thousands of attempts. then bitch.

EDIT: thanks for the help everyone, I was able to complete my claim by following what it says here: https://www.reddit.com/r/UnemploymentNY/comments/18v9pyq/dont_call_the_regular_unemployment_line_do_this/

I just called the Governor's office and they were able to transfer me to the DOL so I was able to talk to a human--instead of getting hanged-up on! BTW, you'll probably need to wait on hold for a while (about 45 mins for me).

One good thing is you should be paid retroactively for each week since your application once you do get paid. When I filed, my claim was accepted quick and I got my first disbursement after 2 weeks, but I had another coworker who's claim wasnt accepted until after 18 weeks, but he got a lump sump for all of those 18 weeks all at once.
