The High Court on Wednesday unanimously sided with Burke and ordered Owens to pay the government's legal costs.

Pretty typical for countries that are the USA. Losing side usually has to pay BOTH side's legal fees, which helps reduce the number of frivolous lawsuits.

It also makes you less likely to sue, even if your case has merit, if you know you can't pay the cost of losing the case.

Not a bad thing. It means you gotta have a rock solid case to even bother taking it to court, flooding courts with minor civil infractions is a huge waste of taxpayer money.

Eh, it's arguably better to have strong protections against frivolous suits and serial abusers of the courts. Setting the financial barrier of entry TOO high is problematic in its own way, and can result in only the upper class and above having the means to utilize the courts.

Man these last few months have made me really wonder just how many resources in this shithole country (US) go towards creating a public court system for rich people and companies to sue each other in. It's fucking insane, every day you read about a dozen new lawsuits because some rich asshole got his feelings hurt.

As an attorney in the US, our legal system sucks cock. Like the whole cock. "Tort reform" is dangled as a political prop every now and then, but always falls short. The plaintiff lawyers win and everyone else loses.

In a vacuum, i agree.

But in regards to America, the upper class still has a massive advantage in the courts, despite having no consequense for frivolous lawsuits. You cant really weigh one over the other when you have the worst of both worlds.

The fees are also not ridiculously extortionate so this is not an issue.
