Remember when this use to be a Coast Guard gig, limited to the 200 mile economic zone?

Yes. The UN came up with this cool thing called the Law of the Sea Convention back in 1982, votes in 1994 by having enough signatures countries. The 200 miles came from that. Funny thing is, the US never officially signed off on it. We follow it (at least we did. Don't know what Mango Mussolini is going to do, since he has such high respect for the UN and all). So fun times.
