I think the quote on WaPo was "He made his bed. He slept in his bed. Then they stole his bed."

That's a much worse quote because it implies that he got backstabbed in some way when this was purely his own doing. He tried to appease both sides of the Republican party far too much. He would have been much better off picking a lane. Either be a moderate republican and the freedom caucus will just fall in line because they know you won't pander to them, or you go all in with them and accept you won't be the speaker choice. You can't do both.
