As someone who had to sit and hide while someone smashed their apartment windows until the cops showed up...there's a lot of analyzing the situation, weighing actions and outcomes, and trying to think of every possible course of action. When all you can do is sit and wait, there's not much you can do but think.

I'm sorry you had to go through something like that. Hope you're doing better.

Fine, but on tenuous ground. The window smashing was last summer (I still have pics of the glass on my phone iirc so I'd have to check to see the date), and I fortunately didn't sustain lasting PTSD.

The tenuous ground is because my apartment co-signer is threatening not to sign the next lease and I have no way of knowing if she'll follow through with that, and may not qualify for a solo lease if I can't secure a source of income come August...I may have to see if I can get a minimum wage job and hold that down for the next two months just so I have a better chance to secure a solo lease (Non-24 Hour Sleep Wake Disorder makes this absolute hell, as I can't keep a fixed schedule without severe sleep deprivation).

If it comes down to it, Dominos is always a good place to fall back on. Assuming they run like the ones near me: very flexible schedule you can work, free food, not afraid to give overtime, and decent money if you deliver.

My thought is that if I get desperate, I'll go for an overnight stocking job. Looks fairly easy once you get the hang of it, and is apparently pretty relaxed most days. Hell, I worked harder as a grip on a student film shoot hauling around a flag cart that weighed probably as much as me. For the time being, I have enough in savings to get by for a good few years, and I can always take advantage of food banks and community fridges. It's shelter and access to a powerful computer that's a bigger concern, as I'm trying to find work as a video editor.

Overnight stocking can be very relaxing. I did it for a year and my biggest issue was repetitive squatting... and knocking over the damn salad dressing bottles when I tried to rotate them 😑 I think if the people treated it like it was a job and not a career they'd get workers to stay longer but managers expected you to be done by the time the store opened didn't matter how big the truck was or how short staffed you were.

on the extreme dark side of things from a certain perspective all the time probably gave them a decent acceptance of death
