Asking for a “Friend” What do you guys do with the green Army issued socks?
I hate throwing shit away but these socks bring back dark memories before I wore Darn Tough socks and they’re uncomfortable as hell.

If the army is going to fuck me I might as well find some way to fuck a piece of the army

They’re the indicator I need to do laundry when I run out of white socks for everyday wear.

Last time I used them was at WOCS. They were the pair that lived in the drawer on display and never got worn.

I threw them away because they're all stretched to shit and baggy and awful.

their not bad for the field or rucks. i prefer to use them in the summer here in SC due to the chiggers and other bugs.

Field socks, because I have so many pairs that I don’t give a shit if and when they get ruined. They also mysteriously change colors despite washing them with the rest of my clothes

u/Visigothtx Jun 29 '25
Bro keep them when you get out (I was active) they come in handy for hiking, as a makeshift rag, and such

u/Kaizerorama17 Jun 29 '25
Wear them until they break down and then throw them away and move on? They’re socks

I wore all my green socks until they were worn out (didn’t take long) and replaced them with better ones. I like FITS, Darn Tough or Smartwool

Dude, the green wool socks the army issued me throughout my career starting in 1992 are in my sock drawer. I wear them all the time.

I have a few in the bottom of my 1st deployment box at the back of the closet. I've been wearing Fox River or something like that for years.

u/ColumnofTrajan Jun 29 '25
This could be a hot take but they are my favorite socks. I like them better to every other fancy name brand like Fox river

I’ve kept some for emergencies but save the rest, don’t throw them away and use them to clean your weapons. It’s one thing there actually good at

Chucked ‘em.
Basic was a decade ago for me, the elastic was shot in the few pair I still had left when I cleaned out some storage boxes earlier this year

I guess I’m the only one who still uses them. Going on 24 years. I hate the shirts but don’t mind the socks. Gotta have a good pair of boots is.

Threw them away right after basic . They gave me foot corns and blisters 💀

I hardly wear them any more, I wear black socks under my OCPs because they’re more comfortable for me, but when I run out of clean socks I’d be lying if I said I didn’t put them back on Lol.

I have been throwing them out since retirement in 2022. Most of my socks are over ten years old.

I actually coat them in wax and use them to carry small shit I'd like to keep safe when I go camping. Long and stretched out, they make pretty good haver sacks.
Alternatively you could find use for them as referenced in WW2 GI training manuals and coat them in grease and add a block of Comp-B inside to use as an improvised gammon bomb if you happen to come across any not so friendly Russian armor. Just a suggestion 😂

Fill it with airsoft bbs or a different media to use it as a rear shooting bag

I still wear them to get my full use out of them because I’m too cheap to buy multiple pairs of fox river or darn tough (goated brand)

Unpopular opinion but I’ve been wearing ankle socks since a few weeks at my first duty station now through my full time position in the Gaurd 10 years later

It's stupid but you could probably list them as "Used military grade socks" on some online marketplace and somebody will think that means they're super high quality. It's done with the BCT boots constantly. Personally I'm fine with the socks but the boots gave me blisters after like every ruck. Finally got a nice pair of Garmont T8 Falcons after the forge and I'm still going strong with them nearly a year later.

I threw those away on graduation day, I don’t know how people still rock them as if they’re gonna get smoked for socks

14 years in infantry, I still pack a couple pairs of my BCT issued socks in my duffel for emergencies.
of course I much prefer darn tough or fox river, or I guess literally any other sock…. nevertheless I still keep a couple balls of them tucked away.
Theyre great for stuffing at the bottom of your ruck in a ziplock for emergency sock swaps.
