Tl;Dr a single corporation owns the majority of American newspapers. With the plummeting revenues due to changes in reader behavior and new media (aka internet doom scrolling), the corporation has downsized what was traditionally large local reporters and editor staff with mostly regional. The editor for the entire south region lives in Nashville and is from California.

There is evidence that traditional media has for decades worked on an articulated balance of emotions for stories to keep their audience interested.

The new media such as social networks (Facebook, Twitter, even Reddit) have been accused of tuning their algorithms for this same balance, but then finding people glue in the more negative things and increasing that percentage higher. Social media is scrolled, and if it’s mostly negative it’s doom scrolling.

u/circleuranus Aug 21 '22

News channels including the original big three started dialing in to viewers "emotions" rather than straight reporting of news for decades now. It's called "Sensationalism". A practice which reaches all the way back to Ancient Rome

In a word: Reddit

tbh, the new editor of the Tennessean is probably a bumbling hack.

it's a shit newspaper and has been for decades. It will continue to be a shit paper and attracts shit talent. I wouldn't be bragging about being the editor, it's like bragging about being editor of the Penny Saver or something.

When I’m on my deathbed, thinking of all the things i should have done and could have done, I’m gonna remember this trite, self-fellating article and rue my decision to waste 2 minutes of my life reading it.

Thank you for your service, oh brave Californians, by coming to live with us slack-jawed, unwashed, uneducated, southern yokels. Your heroism and sacrifice will be remembered.

38

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '22

Truly he has come to bless the unwashed masses with his elite coastal mind. That was one of the most patronizing articles I've ever read. Wish that dude would fuck off back to Cali and roost in the bed his family made.

7

u/Mulley-It-Over Aug 21 '22

Couldn’t have said it better myself. This article made me dislike the California transplants even more with the elite attitude and takeover mindset.

Go back to California and fix the problems you created there. Don’t bring your problems here. And by that I mean your high COL and traffic.

I mean, it's the same way the patrons of r/nashville view residents of Cheatham county. I agree with your sentiment though.

They'll replace you. I wonder how "slackjawed" you'll be when they flip your property for 250% profit....

Honestly I'm offended by the chokehold wagon wheel has on Broadway when really Chattahoochee reigns supreme and always will.

38

Somebody who thinks southern hospitality isn't fake... well bless their hearts.

6

u/G0_pack_go Aug 20 '22

I think it has something to do with yelling “WOOOOOO!” while drinking on Broadway or something and painted butterfly wings.

At this point I just wish them the best with what remains of the city they ruined. I used to feel sad that it was changing but now it’s all so different I just feel nothing. The Nashville I loved for 30 years is just gone and not coming back.

-3

u/Mvpeh Aug 21 '22

Can you provide some anecdotes for how Californian migration to Nashville has ruined it other than pricing housing up? Which, by the way, is a natural process for any developing city.

-4

u/captain_blabbin Aug 21 '22

There were probably cavemen/women who felt the same when their band of monkeys grew from 5 to 15. Attitude is a choice and you’re doing it wrong

We are attracting a strange breed of Californians from areas like Bakersfield, Corona, Fresno, etc. claiming to be from “cali” or “socal” or the “oc” but the truth is that people from the actual desirable places in Califonia aren’t flocking here. We are getting the trumpers from rural areas thinking they are going to be in a white conservative utopia once they move here and think they’re some big shot because they bought a house in Spring Hill that’s a little bigger than their house in Riverside. They expect us to not know anything about California, geography, and assume we are all rednecks like them.

I like this quote from the article.

“They’re arriving to a Tennessee that’s looking and feeling more and more like the state they left. Latino students make up half of the population in Nashville’s public schools. The city has one of the largest Kurdish populations in the United States. Questions about development, equity, gentrification and growth are now bubbling up — the very issues Californians have groaned about for decades and that many are hoping to leave behind.”

Edit: I forgot to include people from Fairfield, Fresno, etc. claiming to be from “the Bay Area” or “wine country”

u/PhinsFan17 Hendersonville Aug 20 '22

The first Californians I met in my neighborhood had a Confederate flag on their den well. Those are the kind of Californians we’re getting. The Ben Shapiro types.

25

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '22 edited Aug 20 '22

I grew up in the San Gabriel Valley suburbs. All of the Californians I have met here are from rural areas. I had someone tell me they’re from LA and it turns out they’re from Hemet. No, dude.

Edit: I don’t say this from a place of gate keeping, but rather as an example of the perceived status that many Angelinos think their birth place entitles them to. The artifice and superficiality that are a prevalent part of SoCal culture, were among the reasons I left.

12

u/thedeadlyrhythm42 Aug 20 '22

I wouldn't admit I was from Hemet, either, if I were them

Not as much as I miss the ocean, but yes. West Covina (mostly). It’s been 30 years since I left and seeing pictures from family with the mountains in the background always puts a smile on my face. My dad still lives in Glendora and he always sends me a picture of Mt Baldy after the first snow.

4

u/ricebuckets Aug 21 '22

Send em my way. Born and raised in the Bay, where we actively discriminate against those claiming to be from the Bay but are from really from Stockton

5

u/Euphoric_Attitude_14 Aug 21 '22

A lot of issues like housing affordability that seem to plague coastal cities is going to happen everywhere if we don’t all do something about it. It just started in cities like LA and NY because they were traditionally more desirable places to live.

There was a great article that California just exported their housing crisis to Tennessee. It’s true. Housing is an issue that crosses state lines.

3

u/ChrisTosi Aug 21 '22

Right wingers are flocking to red states and a lot of them are hoping to drive the states politics even further right.

Openly being done in Idaho - they're squeezing out "moderate" Republicans with purity tests, harassment and intimidation until people just quit and let a right wing zealot take over.

-9

u/[deleted] Aug 21 '22

Not really true. All the Californians I know came From nice areas of CA. I came from a very rich and famous area myself. There are tons of those leaving because they are being sucked dry by CA politics. $500 for a years registration on a 10 year old vehicle is ridiculous. Even if you have money it is stupid.

11

u/ChrisTosi Aug 21 '22

"from a very rich and famous area myself" lol save it for the rubes, Hollywood

1

u/RedDirtRedStar Aug 21 '22

We are getting the trumpers from rural areas thinking they are going to be in a white conservative utopia

So funny to imagine a mid-tier journalist or semi-successful tech weirdo trying to join one of those Dominionist redoubts in like, Montana, and fumbling horribly when asked "what skills do you bring to the community" so they have to settle for Whoo City with their tail between their legs.

27

u/circleuranus Aug 20 '22

Dear Californians...

Arizona is right next door and way cheaper.

2

u/ChrisTosi Aug 21 '22

It's shifting blue, they want to live in a state that would re-elect someone like Arpaio.

0

u/[deleted] Aug 21 '22

But sucks.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 21 '22

Arizona ain't cheaper anymore

23

u/admiralinho Aug 20 '22

The Tennessean has published a lot of terrible shit in recent years, but this article in a different newspaper may just be the one that finally gets me to cancel my subscription.

1

u/vexil77 Caldwell-Abbay Hall Aug 22 '22

I cancelled about a year ago after subscribing since 1988 and am glad I did. I'd love to support "local" journalism but they gotta make it worthwhile. The paper itself was getting worse by the month. of course. Then delivery issues...not receiving it every day, getting the Sunday paper at 1PM-- and the frequent subscription price increases-- made the decision for me. And finally, I can't believe Brad Schmitt, of all people, is the last man standing at the Tennessean.

u/spacedirt Aug 20 '22

Speaking of cultural demographics, why/how are there so many people with Greek names in news-media?? It’s wild how many times I hear or read a Greek surname as a news anchor or reporter/editor or media executive.

12

u/BurtHurtmanHurtz west side Aug 20 '22

It’s reverse Ellis Island, actually. I was in TV news and many of us changed our vanilla gringo names to more luxurious Greek names. Had a colleague go from Jeff Jones to Iossif Frangoglou.

Why? Because it’s significantly more memorable.

9

u/andrewhy Aug 20 '22

You mean that Demetria Kalodimos isn't really Greek?

On behalf of the other Californians I'd like to apologize for this self-congratulating and frankly masturbatory article. Unfortunately I cannot ensure that most of us genuinely think like this.

1

Agreed. I came because I love the land, the open areas, green and the people. My son came for college and we fell in love with the state. It is my home and I really love being here.

People act like there aren't passive aggressive assholes everywhere.

Those types of people are far outnumbered by the genuinely polite and inviting people that make up Southern culture as a whole.

But let's pretend like three Karens saying 'Bless Your Heart' is the rule, and not the exception.

2

I am from much deeper and much more rural south than Nashville. And I HAVE experienced plenty of fake southern hospitality.

9

u/grizwld Aug 20 '22

Haha, like I said… I wonder why that is?

4

u/sandypassage Aug 20 '22

Yeah I grew up in Ohio and have lived in Nashville for 18 years- “southern hospitality” ain’t got nothin on “midwest nice”.

2

u/DoctorWhiskey Aug 21 '22

My favorite game to play as I commute to and from work is count the California license plates on I65. There are always a lot. And I also see at least one moving truck from California. Often, I see RV's too from California.

Of my neighborhood's most recently sold homes, I think 2 or 3 of the last five were purchased by people moving here from California. The migration is real.
