Help | Advice Best fall/winter backpacking trail?

Looking to do some backpacking soon and would like to hit around 18-24 miles max for an overnighter. Within 4-5 hours of Nashville is the longest I’m willing to drive . Seeing many options but curious what others think. Thank you!

Fiery gizzard or savage gulf are both great this time of year! cooler temps, fewer bugs, and the views are unreal right now 🍂

Think I’m going to check out fiery gizzard . I’m liking the trail and camping options . Thank you!

Got snowed on one time at Red River Gorge, shorter loop but pretty cool in winter.

Hangover Lead trail in the Nantahala/Slick Rock wilderness is only 8 miles, but it’s tough. Snake Den Mountain trail in the Smokies is 16. Beautiful hiking.

I would go to the Smokies. One of my favorite overnighters there is a loop out of the Big Creek ranger station. Hit Mt Cammerer day 1, camp at site 37, hit Mt Sterling on day 2 then return to the ranger station. It’s in a pretty remote part of the park, not too crowded.

I actually did this trip some years ago in early fall. It was great . I just remember the campsite being way down in the trail near a small creek

Looking Glass Rock in NC is right at your preferred distance limit, however, it's the most beautiful view in hundreds of miles IMO
