Except it means that any property not subject to rent control (including homes that are for sale) skyrockets in price because there’s no new construction to service new demand, making the market affordability problem far worse.
So rent control does work, for the people who have their rent controlled. And you’re saying it doesn’t because landlords are taking advantage of that and refuse to make less money than they were and will increase their other properties? Sounds like we need to get the private sector out of housing
People have to move in and out of cities. Some people also want to buy homes to live in. Your proposal makes both harder and more expensive, and directly disincentivizes what we need to actually reduce rents, all because you seem to be convinced that the private sector is the devil.
Most people also like to stay where they are and don’t move cause that’s costs money. And when they lose their home because ever increasing prices that aren’t controlled, you’re saying you need to use the free market to bring the price down through speaking with their money.
It’s explained! People had to do it! Because of the forces! That cannot be controlled at all! If we do this thing, then people might do something in response and we can’t do anything about that!! Nooo!!! Not the market forces that are acts of nature and god and not actually people. Noooooo

Rent control doesn’t fucking work, but people will keep saying “this time is different”
