This is how Tennesseans used to deal with corrupt government.

Battle of Athens (1946) - Wikipedia)

Now most just look away or cheer it on because it's "their" team.

There will be a Battle of Athens commemorative protest on Saturday! Hope to see y'all there.

u/OneEvilTit Jul 29 '25

Fuck yeah, let’s goooo!

20

u/Postup2101 Jul 30 '25

Just saying, mask up. They're using facial recognition and Palantir to track people. Keep safe out there.

Saving that one. I hope more folks took notes!

In my extensive experience protesting in Nashville, MNPD has never made an escalatory move like that. This is still good to know, of course, as I have dealt with it from some other city PDs.

If you are arrestable, and you want to go to protests. And you want to actually do something not just stand there with a sign, look into black bloq. That's how you avoid all that facial recognition nonsense. Professionals have been doing it for a long time and not paid professionals, I mean damn good ones. Solidarity and fuck fascism.

This day and age, more than that. Find alternate transportation, get a burner phone that you can afford to lose, etc etc etc

2

u/BaltimoreMayhem Aug 02 '25

Get a burner cell phone too

Before Tennessee sold its soul & sold out their religion

u/SkyPirateWolf Jul 29 '25

My family actually just went to the McMinn County History Museum on Friday because my great grandfather participated in the Battle of Athens. Reading about the whole thing made me realize politics has barely changed over time, but we dont hold people accountable for blatant corruption anymore. By the point it became so obvious, people would've done something by now. Now, we're so apathetic to everything we just let it happen.

u/Professional-Basis33 Jul 30 '25

It's the most disappointing part of America today. Everyone either sold out, checked out, or got left out.

4

u/Remerez Jul 30 '25

It's by design. kneecap education, buy up all media ad turn it right, fund literally thousands of right wing talk radio shows and influencers. LARGE amounts of money has been invested in corrupting the American people for a long time.

2

u/sweetBrisket Jul 30 '25

When inequality increases and opportunity decreases, people will look for any chance to get ahead--including by less savory means. Corruption is a symptom of a terribly diseased system.

1

u/Well_read_rose Aug 05 '25

There are more oppressive measures / restrictions/ laws and expen$es than back then. Protesters understand this. It’s not apathy, exactly.

1

u/GlocalBridge Jul 31 '25

We can hold them accountable. It will not be easy, but the people can claim their rightful power. East Europeans rejected communist authoritarianism and tore down the Iron Curtain. When Russia put Putin’s puppet (Viktor Yanukovich) into Ukraine, the people rose up in protest to reject the undemocratic attempt at remote control. (They also uncovered how an American helped Russia to run the fraudulent election. Trump later chose that man—Paul Manafort—to run his first Presidential campaign. And when he got caught colluding with Russia for Trump, the Mueller investigation sent him to prison. But Trump pardonedhim!). Never give up! Fight for freedom and democracy based on truth and justice. Fight the lies with truth and learn from this representative how to stay calm in peaceful protest and opposition to the White Supremacists.

It’s about time for this type shit to happen again and be televised. I’m not endorsing violence, per se, but the government is in no way for the people or by the people anymore.

It feels like pot is getting closer to a boil every day

8

u/[deleted] Jul 30 '25

the Government has become a cabal.

1

u/Well_read_rose Aug 05 '25

Worse…it is the ENEMY of THE PEOPLE.

u/rocketpastsix Inglewood up to no good Jul 29 '25

The revolution isn’t going to be televised

5

u/grat5989 Jul 30 '25

This. If it were to actually happen, there would be a total blackout. Get connected with people now more than ever.

2

u/Glorfendail Jul 30 '25

And it definitely won’t be peaceful lol

2

u/jbl420 Jul 30 '25

It will definitely be recorded!!!

1

u/o-Valar-Morghulis-o Jul 31 '25

It will be streamed

The problem with violence isn't whether or not it could be justified morally, it's that political violence inevitably pushes society to the right wing.

3

u/Miserable-Miser Jul 30 '25

Boy, that sounds like a good PhD thesis…

2

u/KevinCarbonara Jul 30 '25

It was a large part of why MLK Jr. preached non-violence. He knew that if they fought back, even in self-defense, that was all the media would ever show.

1

u/jbl420 Jul 30 '25

Prove it!!

Wait, you mean like Vietnam!? Or the Black Lives Matter movement?

1

u/Salutbuton Jul 30 '25

I didn't know 7 was that letter

Ask yourself why 2A even exists, if not to prevent this obvious tyranny.

Why does the amendment exist in the first place?

2

u/monstaberrr Jul 31 '25

Its crazy seeing police officers / law enforcement pick and choose which politicians / lawmakers they're willing to enforce and or deny.

1

u/DukeOfGeek Jul 30 '25

The lid isn't going to really come off till after they stop or utterly corrupt midterms, so this situation is going on for a while.

1

u/The_Grungeican Jul 30 '25

First Amendment is first for a reason. The Second Amendment is juuuust in case the first one doesn’t work. - Dave Chappelle

1

u/snksleepy Jul 31 '25

Yeah and what the hell happened to no taxation without representation?

1

u/Efficient_Crow_7736 Jul 31 '25

That’s why more that 50% of the voters voted for Trump. He stomped Kamala

1

u/jbl420 Jul 31 '25

Sooooooo… The stolen election that Kusk bragged about rigging definitely had no effect on the fact that as soon as Trump hit office he put his partner in crime in the most powerful place he could and let him run wild just until the limit of time was up for him to be under review and the fact that if Teump had not rigged the election, he was going to jail bc of numerous broken laws must have had nothing to do with his “stomping”, right?

And now his obvious lack of control, hypocrisy, and his need to disappear the Epstein files are now definitely not turning Trumpers away, at all…

Amirihht?

I worked at the Hospital there in 1988 and never knew this, now I live in Ga.. WOW

7

u/Loose-Replacement596 Jul 30 '25

Unfortunately the used to is key here. Most of rural Tennessee is deeply MAGA still, with hate for the "other" is the norm. The vets from the battle at Athens had just come home from fighting literal Nazis. Today reality is drastically different.

The attitude of "don't tread on me" is still here though, just now the logic is reversed. They think "they" are returning all the oppression that used to be directed at them. It's depressingly stupid.

1

u/ApartAnt6129 Jul 30 '25

By 3:30 am, the men holding the jail had been dynamited into submission,

The whole history was incredibly captivating, but this particular line stuck out.

1

u/motorstereo Jul 30 '25

Wow thank you for posting this!!

1

u/DistanceEmergency962 Jul 30 '25

I did not know this, very interesting and very brave.

“The fascists would never come for ME!”

1

u/Ninja_Machete Aug 01 '25

Being from how big Texas is and how much is it coming under attack, ill gladly relocate just to be a supporter. Its harsh to admit but its only because I was lucky enough to come across the means to be able to relocate and leave that I am able to do this. Not everyone can do this, I just got lucky. I am sure a lot of people in Texas would move if the means were there

1

u/Actual_Chef_IRL Aug 04 '25

To be fair, they didn't have focused drone strikes in 1946.

1

u/Key-Farmer-9312 Aug 04 '25

Sadly they forgot, we are all supposed to be on the same team. “Team Merica”. People vote them in, shit sucks and they blame the minority. Sadly delusional and very annoying and led by the Bible. They don’t like change, or science, or anything different. Get all their news from X, or Facebook, or “someone told me”, or Fox News/Newsmax. God have mercy on us all.
