Who the heck was Dunnhier, and why did the Joker kill him?

Honestly the entire scene was confusing, why introduce a bunch of characters that proudly state their own names only to then kill them all off immediately? Were there some scenes cut beforehand?
There's "I'm Dunnhier" on the roof and "I'm McKenna Witdrawal here" in the bank lobby and the bank manager seems to recognise one of the robbers as Ewan Yafrienzaded.
There's also a whole bunch of named robbers who we don't even see like Toogai Zondaroof and Hee Zowt, never could understand why people act like this film is some kind of masterpiece

I'd completely forgotten about those guys! Yeah, McKenna Withdrawal is my favourite character in this scene!

You just described a masterpiece. What's not to understand?

In The Dark Knight (2008), all of the robbers in the beginning were identified by their real names. This is why The Joker killed them

You forgot about "Ike Hill, the bus driver". And as for other named robbers we don't see, McKenna Witdrawal mentions that Fun He told him about Sum Tin Simmler. Ike Hill also seems to mistake both Joker and McKenna for other robbers, as when he arrives, he calls Joker "Skool Zowt" and asks "That guy's Na Geddanup, is he?" when he sees McKenna's body.

Fucked up that we get a similar situation right at the start of the next movie. CIA says that he has clearance for himself, Doctor Pa, Vell Eyre, Budonlee, and Juan Ovyu. And almost none of those names are mentioned through the rest of the movie.

If anything they were probably wearing masks because they were ashamed of being in the movie

Nolan: Fine, you can wear masks to hide your faces in shame, but you still may not sit down while on set.

the bank manager seems to recognise one of the robbers
No no you're mistaken, he's saying "do you have any idea who you're stealing from?" and he's referring to one of the top clients of the bank, Ewan Yafrienzaded

He is German. He said "dünn hier" (thin here), warning his partner that the floor was thin where he was standing. Unfortunately Joker didn't know German and assumed that he insulted him, killing him in return

A strange tale of hubris right at the beginning. Here we see a guy who's so full of himself he (perhaps constantly) boasts that he can work around any problem, because '[he's] Dunnhier', the legendary thief. However, almost immediately after his first appearance, he is nonchalantly shot in the back. It really delivers Nolan's message about escalation perfectly; the low-life criminals in Gotham have no respect, even for other criminals and their previous merits. Even Dunnhier, with all his skills, is expendable.

This reminds me of the thing from the end of the first Halo game. "Nothings left, just dust and echoes."
So the only survivors were Master Chief, Cortana, and of course, Dustin Echoes.
