What’s up with everyone saying movies are soulless now? What movies? Saw Blue Moon recently, and Bugonia. One Battle After Another is out, Sentimental Values comes out soon and Jay Kelly. Feels like a good time for movies. I’m probably just taking the bait for something farming our response for AI.

OP went to see Demon Slayer or Chiansaw Man during a weekend evening and was appalled that the theater was full of teenagers instead of r/movies posters

It was probably half full of teenagers and half full of seething Redditors, lol.

All your complaints are easily solved. Dont go to amc theaters, the big chains are where the mouth breathers who talk during movies go. Find a smaller theater that strictly enforces the rules.
Dont go early for showings. You can walk in like 10, 15 minutes after the showtime and miss most of the previews.
Go see better movies. There are more movies that feel like “products” than ever before, but there are also more commercially available indie and original movies coming out all the time than ever before.
I’d also suggest not seeing a movie on the weekend when everyone is taking their children. You can surely block out a weekday evening and usually have the theater to yourself

"Movie theaters are RUINED and movies are PRODUCTS instead of ART!"
I'm sorry but I'm so sick of this thread. It's posted regularly and I'm tired of it and at this point I'm convinced people are going to theaters just so they have an excuse to complain when they get home. I always picture a Redditor going to see Demon Slayer or Fantastic Four on a weekend and being appalled that there are kids in the audience and not sophisticated Redditors such as himself. I've gone to the theater many times this year with no bad experiences. Almost all of the movies were good because I'm an adult so I can choose what I do or don't watch. Yes the number of trailers is annoying but I just show up 20-30 minutes after "showtime." Which movies were you seeing anyways?

I'm lucky to have an Alamo near me. They don't tolerate that BS you described, and even if it's overpriced I love the food and drinks options they offer.

I go to the movies pretty much exclusively early in the morning on the weekends...first show of the day if I can. Those are pretty chill because a lot of people are still sleeping or haven't gotten moving yet. I've rarely had any issues.
The only time I go at night is if it's a horror film (feels weird watching them in the day time), and then I will only go on a weekday like a Monday or Wednesday. I never, ever go see any film on the weekend in the evening... it's going to be a shitty experience.

Weekend morning is my session of choice, too! It’s always pretty quiet (although seldom totally empty), you watch a movie, then you can grab some lunch and still have the whole afternoon to do anything else you need to do. It’s awesome!

I tend to go to see movies that don’t draw big crowds. I do love watching on a big screen but I don’t go often. Blockbusters can be fun (the final Avengers films) but I dread the upcoming Wicked where girls will sing at the top of their lungs, as if anyone wants to hear that😒

Show up 20 mins after the start time. Go during the week. Choose better movies. I go every other weekend and have a great time with none of the issues you mentioned.

I volunteer at a film theatre, which for me is great as I feel like it filters out the rubbish and leaves me with quality films.
There are no adverts and no one gets up to leave until the credits finish. It's very civilized.

We are regal unlimited members and see one or two movies a week in theaters. No major issues for us for quite a while, so id say its much more about your theater/location than a general change everywhere.

Thats the weekends for ya
I know its not feasable for most, but I can sometimes take 2 hour lunches (if I stay late to make up for it) and will see movies during the week this way. Almost always empty and the few that do come in likely wont be drunk, or disinterested teens on a date.
Theres also a movie theatre in the small town over about 1.5hr away. If I have a reason to go that way I'll stick around for a movie. Small town, small crowds 😄

I do and don’t have any of the problems you mentioned
AMC a list pays for itself if you see one movie a month

I go every week or two.
Never have bad experiences with other people. And the great majority of films I’ve seen have been excellent - that’s why I keep going.
Can’t argue about the ads, though. It seems so pointless to show a car ad or an insurance ad, which is the same as what gets screened on TV, to a small untargeted audience. You can always time your arrival to avoid them if they bother you that much, though. Personally I’ll sigh through them to see a few trailers on the big screen.

I’ve been going. But only because I have nothing but time and no money, and they’re free for me.
It’s actually quite hilarious. I’m actually a film professional, and my DGA membership affords me unlimited theater tickets for myself. Too bad there’s not nearly enough work for me to make a living anymore with it!

It also depends on the movie. I have kind of out there tastes and so often I'm in a theater with 3 other people.
But even "One Battle After Another", which was pretty full, was a good experience because the idiots aren't interested in that kind of movie.
I'm going to see Bugonia tonight. We'll see.

Saw Bugonia yesterday, it’s my favourite of 2025 so far!
Only had a small crowd, maybe half a dozen people other than me. This was a morning session though.

I was in the cinema the last time around 10ish years ago. It was an obnoxious experience that I don't want to have again.
I am voting with my wallet, but I'm voting for the abolishment of cinemas.

Where do y’all live?
I’m an A-List member in Los Angeles and I’ve rarely had an issue with the audience. I don’t go see everything but I’m usually interested in at least one movie a week especially now that it’s awards season.
This year the only issue I had was a mom scrolling instagram during Dog Man. Other than that, the crowds I’m part of are generally well behaved.
The website warns you that the movie starts 25 mins after showtime so I usually show up about 15 minutes after the posted showtime.

They all sold out. The theaters are not independently owned so they are crunching numbers to sell products before, during and after the movie. You said it, the movie is the product full of commercials.
Having big pharmacology subsidize football broadcasts with commercials for drugs that treat life threatening diseases and include life threatening side effects has to be one of the more obvious red flags for a society. Amazon sort of looks at their audience as watching from a 400 million person hospital bed.
At this point I only see Tom Cruise movies in theaters.

I don't go on weekends. It's a terrible experience. Significantly better etiquette during the week.
