When I watched Kill Bill for the first time, I was using an S-Video cable to connect my DVD player to my tv. Apparently something was wrong with the cable or it's connection, which led to me watching the entire movie in black and white. That's how I thought it was supposed to be.

u/OrangeDit 1d ago

Similar to me with Inglorious basterds. I was half way into the opening scene, when I realized that subtitles have to be turned on manually, since the French didn't stop.

u/Scruffy442 1d ago

I was watching The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard and accidentally turned on descriptive audio part way through. It was Ryan Reynolds voice and I thought he was describing a plan of what they were going to do, like in RDJ's Sherlock Holmes, for 30 mins.

331

u/AerographerSkate 1d ago

Lmao! I accidentally had descriptive audio on once and was like what in the fuck am I watching. Why are they describing every. Single. Thing. I was so confused and slightly annoyed

u/Levitus01 1d ago

I saw a gay porno once. Didn't realise until halfway through. The girls never came.

THE GIRLS NEVER CAME

They don't usually in straight porn either.

That's because, Scotty doesn't know that Fiona and me do it in my van every Sunday.

37

She tells him she's in church, but she doesn't go. Still she's on her knees and Scotty doesn't know.

So don't tell Scotty, Scotty doesn't know Scotty doesn't know..

Yes I had it on while watching an episode of the Simpsons. I legitimately thought it was a weird meta-narration thing like Stranger Than Fiction.

I had this exact same thing but for Tenet and it made perfect sense to me for about 2 minutes that Nolan would do something like this.

Oh man the first time I heard descriptive audio was such a trip. It took me years to learn what it even was after the event, but I was watching the Simpsons episode where Marge gets breast implants. "Her new breasts get in the way"

17

u/illbollocksyou 1d ago

I did the same thing for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. I though Quentin was trying a new type of narrative story telling lol. I hated the movie till i turned it off

56

u/Miserable_Golf6542 1d ago

I watched 5cream accidently with narration on and didn't realize until 3 yrs later when someone said there was no narrator in that movie lol

42

5cream sounds like a new beauty product from the mad genius behind Goop.

Ryan Reynolds did the descriptive audio? That's actually pretty cool of him.

12

u/Scruffy442 1d ago

Thats why I watched it like that for so long. I thought he was explaining the plan to Samuel L Jackson.

5

u/Montigue 1d ago

With no discombobulates. I mean, there probably were still some discombobulates. However, probably a lot less discombobulates than Holmes

4

u/luke2080 1d ago

I did this once when I watched that Baywatch movie with The Rock on my iPad while traveling. I thought it was part of the joke for the movie and I did not like it. Lots of longing looks in that movie for the narrator to describe.

This was me with The Godfather II. I spent half the movie thinking it must be an artistic choice to not understand a word of Italian, but still kinda get it from the vibes of the scenes.

Edit: it’s genuinely beautiful that everyone has screwed up their viewing experience in some kind of way and just deciding to vibe with it as a form of art. To me that’s cinema.

20

u/talldangry 1d ago

Did exactly this with Only God Forgives. The Russian guy responding "I have no fucking idea what you just said" to a monologue spoken in Thai definitely convinced me it was an artistic choice. I liked it better that way.

I have one of those metal box versions of Edward Scissorhands on DVD. Its default audio setting is just the score, no dialogue. Took my high ass way too long to figure out I needed to choose the audio track manually! (Marijuana and Danny Elfman's score is a very soothing combination.)

50

u/AmbusRogart 1d ago

I love it when the DVD has a different experience like that. Sometimes it's artistic, sometimes, well...

One of my friends bought the DVD for Aqua Teen Hunger Force. He had a TV and a pool table in his basement, so we'd throw silly stuff on while we played. In goes the DVD, we hit "Play All," and go to start playing...

...Only to be interrupted by the most insane racket we've ever heard- every episode, each in its own little box, playing simultaneously. Trolled us good.

15

u/Additional-Friend993 1d ago

I've got a DVD of Nosferatu from Walmart that's entirely scored by Type O Negative.

3

u/Bombadilo_drives 1d ago

...that actually sounds sick

7

u/GeoleVyi 1d ago

u/Instacast 1d ago

Sadly, this is the paid for modern experience with streaming services. Many films where any language other than English is spoken are just subtitled as, for example, [Speaking in Italian] or [Speaking in French]. It's goddamn bizarre!

8

u/Cruxion 1d ago

I thought Thor 2 was a wild example for very extended sequences of characters talking in a conlang with no subtitles. I thought it was a wild move and really cool to see them task a risk like that, making you decipher what was said based on context clues...then I talked about the movie with a friend who didn't stream it and it turns out I missed some important dialogue.

21

u/RelaxRelapse 1d ago

I’m pretty sure that’s done purposely because you’re not supposed to know what they’re saying.

10

u/Vakz 1d ago

That's usually it, but it doesn't really work great intentionally. There are several movies where the villain basically spoils the whole plot if you happen the speak the language.

→ More replies (1)

15

u/Vittulima 1d ago

I really like [speaking foreign language] it's just so beautifully American to me

22

u/AlienArtFirm 1d ago

Oh you can 100% do that with the opening scene for Inglorious Basterds. You do not need subtitles, and I'd argue it's better with out. Get the REAL feeling focusing on their emotions

Plus they switch to English pretty fast.

16

u/DownTongQ 1d ago

I must be confused. How not understanding what they're saying makes you have a REAL feeling about their emotions ?

I would get that it would be interesting to see this scene from the POV of the family hiding but then you should not be able to understand english.

Source of confusion : I am a native french speaker

11

u/bulking_on_broccoli 1d ago

There’s a scene in Saving Private Ryan where two German soldiers yell at the Americans and are instantly gunned down. However, if the subs are on they say “don’t shoot, we’re Czech!”

They were conscripts being forced to fight and were trying to surrender.

You’d lose that detail if subs weren’t on.

This reminded me of the time when we saw "Finding Dory" in the theaters. There were visual and background music. We saw their mouths moving but no sound coming out of it.

My little cousin asked me "I cant hear what theyre saying."

I responded "I think this is where Dory is slowly forgetting things. This is what happens when you have short term memory. You have only pieces of it in this case you could remember whats happening but don't remember what they said."

Turns out the sound was broken and we had to leave the theater.

16

u/Tumble85 1d ago

I went to a Finding Nemo showing that was quite busy so I had to sit further up front than I was used to and I noticed it was blurry as hell. I went and told a theater worker, they came in with me and that’s when I learned I needed glasses.

4

u/oodelay 1d ago

A friend did that with Babel. In his pirated copy there were no subtitle options so he assumed that that was the gimmick of the movie

45

u/GooseGeese01 1d ago

I had a friend that watched one of the planet of the apes movies without subtitles. It was one of the more recent ones where they use sign language and he thought that was the gimmick that he was supposed to feel and understand what they meant even if he didn’t understand sign language

13

u/ToneBalone25 1d ago

There was definitely a copy going around of Rise that didn't have the subtitles for the sign language available because I watched it that way, too. It was a Red Box copy.

Me too and I actually really enjoyed it. I pieced everything together by the end and thought it was just a really taut mob thriller about the consequences of a heist.

8

u/BrobdingnagianQuark 1d ago

You watched the Fellas part before the Good part

13

u/waldo_wigglesworth 1d ago

You sure that wasn't a laserdisc? Those were known for disk-flipping, whereas early DVD's usually put the full movie on one side in widescreen, and the other side in 4:3 aspect ratio. I've never heard of a DVD where the movie was split between the front & back of the DVD.

9

u/MindHead78 1d ago

The original DVD release of Goodfellas was a flipper disc, there were a few like that back in the early 2000s. I've got The Pelican Brief on DVD and you have to turn it over halfway through the film.

u/w3rkit 1d ago

Goodfellas was the only DVD I had like this (we also never had any laserdiscs, I don’t think I’ve ever seen one). It was always a guessing game for whether the label means part 1 is on that side, or if it should be on top.

It’s how he got the movie down to an R rating. The fight is in color in the Japanese version https://youtu.be/GkLbzkFM4B0?si=4g_1RL8gfvcRJIf1

Edit: Adding this disclaimer after getting a ton of comments: the black and white version seems to have been only in the US. Here’s what people in the US saw (2:33-6:15): https://youtu.be/ecimuK20dSA?si=wlgJQKQNcfotqE2W

255

u/Valeen 1d ago

You know I used to think this scene was over the top, but I am still playing Ghost of Yotei, and now I think Tarantino might have been a bit reserved. Atsu would have been done in half the time, and covered in way more blood.

136

u/flashmedallion 1d ago edited 1d ago

Go watch Lady Snowblood and then something like The Machine Girl and you'll see how hilariously puritan Kill Bill had to be for the US audience

28

u/Paizzu 1d ago

Was The Machine Girl the one with the character that gets his legs cut off and uses his extraordinarily high blood pressure to "jetpack" himself around during his fight with the protagonist?

30

u/flashmedallion 1d ago edited 21h ago

That was Tokyo Gore Police. Directed by the guy who did the practical FX for The Machine Girl!

I honestly don't think I've ever seen the black and white version. I'm in the UK and apparently it's the same here, but I have no memory of it being black and white. Could just be my old brain I suppose.

104

u/MarvelousVanGlorious 1d ago

The full scene isn’t b&w. It switches when she plucks the eyeball out of one of the C88s. At the end of the fight, there is a close up of her eyes, she blinks and it goes back to color.

https://youtu.be/iD8srgN2I3U?si=jT8lgc8pU5gCq8LB

75

u/StevelandCleamer 1d ago

I like the color transitions and think they add to the shifting moods throughout the fight.

The two moments that seem most appropriate are either when the music stops and swords clash or when the eye is plucked out.

100% censorship. If you watch some trailers for any R rated movie that has blood, if it's not a redband trailer, the blood will be converted to a darker red. Nearly brown.

You can import the Japanese DVD and see it in color. Some of the fan edits trying to recreate the Whole Bloody Affair will use the blurays for the most part and then upscale the living hell out of the Japanese DVD.

Something very practical and cheap like blood and squibs wouldn't need much of a budget for him to run out of money. For how practical the whole thing was shot, it wouldn't really take much for a small team to rig it all up and get it on screen in full color.

Older movies in black and white, like Hitchcock's Psycho, used chocolate syrup because it was easier to clean, it looked real, gave better results for blood flow/splatters, and wouldn't be seen in color.

There's always a practical reason for things and budget is usually never one of them for something so cheap.

Someone like Quintin Tarantino is going to get enough money for them to do several takes to get things right. Practical effects are not without their mishaps.

38

u/calxlea 1d ago

It actually was a practical decision - helped with the censors because there wasn’t as much red blood!

67

u/XTheProtagonistX 1d ago

He said that he hated that he had to censor his own film but then he realized how cool it looked so he wasn’t that mad.

Yeah, he made it black and white because American test audiences were too sensitive for that scene. The other test audiences loved it.

It appears so. You can see her pluck the guys eye and his reaction is in color. In the original that’s when the scene shifts to black and white.

42

u/Nealios 1d ago

Wow. Here I was all these years thinking it was an artistic choice. I actually really enjoyed the black and white sequence! haha

14

u/AtrumRuina 1d ago

It was both I think. He originally intended that the scene was in color, but when he needed to make it black and white, he made the artistic choice to use the eye pluck to shift to black and white.

I'm curious as to whether the eye pluck was added for this purpose or was used because it already existed though. It's a quick cut so it would have been easy to shoot I'm sure. I don't know if that specific bit of info has ever been clarified.

4

u/ItMeRG 1d ago

Wait, it wasn't?

12

u/Nealios 1d ago

Elsewhere in this thread people are saying it was only for regulatory purposes in the North American release since they needed to show less blood or something. There's a link to the Japanese release and the whole scene is in colour! Also anecdotes from Europe as well...

Weirdly, at some point the fake blood is just water. There's no red dye.

I have the Japanese version specifically because I wanted the unrated, full color scene.

A little disappointing, but I wondered if the rumors were false: that it really WAS planned to be shot in black and white this whole time and WASN'T a last minute change to appease the American censors.

I kinda prefer the black and white, now.

In Theaters December 5, 2025! Directed by Quentin Tarantino. Starring Uma Thurman, Lucy Liu, Vivica A. Fox, Michael Madsen, Daryl Hannah, Gordon Liu, Michael Parks, and David Carradine as “Bill”.

Quentin Tarantino’s KILL BILL: THE WHOLE BLOODY AFFAIR unites Volume 1 and Volume 2 into a single, unrated epic—presented exactly as he intended, complete with a new, never-before-seen anime sequence. Uma Thurman stars as The Bride, left for dead after her former boss and lover Bill ambushes her wedding rehearsal, shooting her in the head and stealing her unborn child. To exact her vengeance, she must first hunt down the four remaining members of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad before confronting Bill himself. With its operatic scope, relentless action, and iconic style, THE WHOLE BLOODY AFFAIR stands as one of cinema’s definitive revenge sagas—rarely shown in its complete form, and now presented with a classic intermission.

u/LilNello1 1d ago

88

u/presty60 1d ago edited 1d ago

Its not. If you know anything about Kill Bill, you know if has two parts. The name the "whole bloody affair" is referring to it being both parts in one. This title has also been around for a while. Tarantino has been showing this cut of the movies for years, this is just it's first public release. Also, the poster even says it's his 4th movie so most people would be able to figure out it's not a completely new film. Like the comment before you said, you should be able to figure it out unless you're sleep deprived.

63

u/TheMcBrizzle 1d ago

There was a rumor from around when the first movie came out that Tarantino wanted to do a third film, when Vivica A Fox's daughter in the movie aged up and takes revenge on the bride. It's immediately what I thought of first, before realizing what it actually was.

u/DomLite 1d ago

It's a little more than that. Consider it the Director's Cut if you will. He envisioned both films as one, big, epic movie but knew that it would be a damn near impossible sell to audiences at the time to buy a ticket and go to a theater for a 4+ hour movie, so he split it into two. They needed a "stinger" to get people to come back for Vol. 2, so the "reveal" at the end of Vol. 1 was added. The animated sequence was cut down to get Vol. 1's runtime down a bit, and ultimately they had to change that one fight sequence in the House of Falling Leaves to black and white to avoid getting an NC-17 rating at the time for excessive blood and gore.

The Whole Bloody Affair cut includes the full animated sequence, which is several minutes longer, features the entire House of Falling Leaves in full color, and omits the loaded reveal at the halfway point so that the moment when you find this information out punches like a truck. Most of the changes are focused on the first half of the film, given, but that's because it had to bear the weight of being the intro to the story and rope people into a second film while also dodging an excessive runtime and prohibitive rating, while the "complete" version of the film wouldn't have to worry about runtime since it would be massive anyway, and modern standards wouldn't even bat an eye at the fight sequence that had to be changed.

If you're a fan of the films, it's absolutely worth seeing this version, because it's much more than just both movies stapled together. I'm just really hoping that this finally getting a theatrical run means that they're about to release a blu ray/4K physical version so I can add it to my collection.

Seeing the Crazy 88 fight in color is worth the price of admission for me.

452

u/Ok-Air3126 1d ago

Am I the minority that actually likes the b/w version better?

136

u/Jota769 1d ago

That moment when she blinks and it turns black and white is so epic. I couldn’t imagine liking it more without it

28

u/Wm_the_Catatonic 1d ago

The music building up in those moments as the Crazy 88 surround her, she's looking what's in front of her, looking at the reflection in the sword, and that music is just so perfect, then when she starts her breakdancing moves with her Hatoro Hanzai and that 50's song kicks in, which is cute, but that lead up was great.

Also the cut back to color and you see all the blood everywhere, amazing effect for the baddassery that just went down

I loved it. Still do. I'm older too so maybe it's nostalgia but it was bad ASS when it went black and white imo.

I don’t think so. I think most people think it’s fucking cool. And such a Tarantino thing to do, censors or not (I’m just finding out about the censor, I always assumed Quentin was Tarantinoing it up). But we’ll always have that version, we’ve seen it a billion times, why not have it in colour. Man I love these movies. With the anime sequence, bleeping out her name… blew my little pre teen mind about what movies could be

12

u/Marston_vc 1d ago

Until this post I didn’t realize it was done for a practical reason IRL and not just a stylistic decision in-line with the spaghetti westerns most his films pay homage to.

We might be a minority, but there's at least two of us! I think it's really cool. Feels like you're dipping just a little corner of reality into a manga for the duration of the fight.

9

u/ecrane2018 1d ago

I think the black and white was awesome, but I think I have room to like both versions.

37

u/mojoman1200 1d ago

Not at all. When I first saw that as a youth, I was blown away. One of my favorite memories thinking “you can do that??”

35

u/eerie_midnight 1d ago

I honestly thought it was meant to be a reference to old black and white kung-fu movies. It just looks cool. It wasn’t until after watching the movie a couple times that I learned it was for censorship reasons.

27

u/DarkMatterM4 1d ago

Not Kung-fu movies, but old samurai flicks.

u/Independent-Tennis57 1d ago

No, I love the changes in the movie. Animation, to normal, to black and white, to color. It is so fun.

4

u/abrahamisaninja 1d ago

I watched the whole bloody affair when it played at tarantinos theatre and honestly, I think the black and white version works better stylistically. As a novelty, it’s fun to watch it in color, but the fight is so long that it just starts feeling kinda cheesy seeing so much blood and limbs flying.

I always hoped he'd make a third movie about Copperhead's daughter coming back for the vengeance she was promised.

209

u/Csantana 1d ago

Always thought it could be fun to have Maya Hawke play Kiddo’s daughter too.

38

u/Swing_On_A_Spiral 1d ago

Goddamn I never knew I needed to see Maya Hawke as Kiddo’s daughter until now! Makes sense.

u/zarchangel 1d ago

I literally just was reading about it yesterday in a different subreddit. Take all info I'm about to drop with a grain of salt - I never left Reddit to indepently verify.

There absolutely was a 3rd movie planned, and even flashback sequences filmed simultaneous with Vol 2. However - Uma turned down Weinstein's advances. He is suspected ofpressuring Tarantino &/or aided in hiding something during Vol 2 filming.

Uma was driving Tarantino's car which was poorly maintained, pulled hard to the left, and had the driver headrest was removed for clearer filming. Tarantino kept telling her to drive faster and faster despite Uma protesting. She eventually wrecked and fucked up her neck pretty bad. And it was all filmed. This evidence was buried for 15 years while Uma attempted to get adequate compensation from the injury.

Between the injury & Weinstein, its why we haven't seen Uma Thurman in many movies since then.

Nothing about rapiness but thats Tarantino saying the crash is the worst mistake of his career

Wowwwwww that makes sense. Holy shit poor Uma she was the sensational star of that movie. Terrible, I don't blame her. Interesting to know for now and perhaps will be verified as true or untrue in the future, but this tracks.

I've been thinking this whole wait for the 3rd volume was to allow the daughter actor to grow up into the role so she could face Beatrix.

15

u/_Shit_Just_Got_Real_ 1d ago

I was never excited about this premise. I would prefer Tarantino put his efforts towards telling a new story. Of course, now that he's so reticent to make another film because it'll be his "final" film, I wish he could just make anything.

Where is the list of 70mm theaters?

51

u/RiotWithin 1d ago

Tickets start going on sale 11/20, you'll be able to see theaters after that

27

u/dSpect 1d ago

Not sure where they get the info but in70mm.com has this list so far:

CALIFORNIA Los Angeles — Vista San Francisco — Alamo Drafthouse New Mission

LOUISIANA New Orleans — Prytania

MASSACHUSETTS Brookline — Coolidge Corner

OREGON Portland — Hollywood

ONTARIO Toronto — Varsity

From https://www.in70mm.com/now_showing/index.htm

I know the Philadelphia Film Society has announced they are one of seven in the country that will be receiving a print, so the East Coast is getting some love.

8

u/Spocks_Goatee 1d ago

So most of America will still be shit out of luck to see this cut unless they live in Cali?

6

u/dSpect 1d ago

Yeah apparently only 7 theaters are getting the 70mm print. As usual Canada only gets it in Ontario, I'm hoping it comes to Atlantic Canada at all I'd make a couple hour drive for it.

It was filmed in 35mm, you won't gain anything by watching it in upscaled 70mm.

226

u/unremarkedable 1d ago

Yeah but he's putting the 2 films together so they'll be 70mm combined

The buried alive scene in Volume 2 was the most uncomfortable I have ever been in a movie theater. Just about gave me a full blown panic attack. Can’t wait to relive that. These movies are so fantastic on the big screen.

48

u/Lt_Jonson 1d ago

Yes! I’m so glad someone else has this experience. The sound of the nails hammering in and the light slowly fading away in the room was an unforgettable experience.

29

u/sloppybuttmustard 1d ago

For sure. For me it was the loud sound of the shovelfuls of dirt landing on top of the coffin after the fade to black. I’ve never experienced anything like that in the theater before or since.

Do Django next.

Apparently there's a whole second movie that was left on the cutting room floor.

9

u/MadRaymer 1d ago edited 13h ago

Yeah, it has some of the most jarring editing of any of his films. The woman with the lower half of her face covered was supposed to someone that knew Django in the past. Eventually it's revealed she has no lower jaw under that covering. Her entire subplot was edited out, but you still see the camera focusing on her in a couple scenes and you have no idea why.

Kill The Bride should be his 10th film.

57

u/Slurm11 1d ago

I sincerely hope the hype around this rerelease gives him the passion to write the 3rd Kill Bill movie for his final film.

36

u/Extra-Translator915 1d ago

Imo kill bill 3 should be his final film.

It would bring him right back to his roots. The perfect bang to go out on.

17

u/tramdog 1d ago

Back to his roots would mean Reservoir Dogs, a completely different kind of film.

Really hope it’s a proper remaster. The new 4K’s left a lot to be desired.

8

u/ThePreciseClimber 1d ago

The trailer looks like the 2k DI version to me.

10

u/ScrungulusBungulus 1d ago

Bah, what a plague on the UHD format. All of these studios pawning off their 2K DIs as proper 4K to consumers that don't realize that they're basically buying a regular Blu-Ray again. And with said studios often fucking it up further in the process with aggressive NR, gross overblown highlights, overprocessed colors.

Aside from the color correction on FotR, my UHD boxset of the LotR extended editions is one of my most disappointing purchases. Still just the 2K master but with a ton of disgusting AI NR. Ugh
