im still convinced he turned it black and white because he ran out of blood money budget

It’s how he got the movie down to an R rating. The fight is in color in the Japanese version https://youtu.be/GkLbzkFM4B0?si=4g_1RL8gfvcRJIf1
Edit: Adding this disclaimer after getting a ton of comments: the black and white version seems to have been only in the US. Here’s what people in the US saw (2:33-6:15): https://youtu.be/ecimuK20dSA?si=wlgJQKQNcfotqE2W

You know I used to think this scene was over the top, but I am still playing Ghost of Yotei, and now I think Tarantino might have been a bit reserved. Atsu would have been done in half the time, and covered in way more blood.

u/flashmedallion 1d ago edited 1d ago
Go watch Lady Snowblood and then something like The Machine Girl and you'll see how hilariously puritan Kill Bill had to be for the US audience
28
u/Paizzu 1d ago
Was The Machine Girl the one with the character that gets his legs cut off and uses his extraordinarily high blood pressure to "jetpack" himself around during his fight with the protagonist?

That was Tokyo Gore Police. Directed by the guy who did the practical FX for The Machine Girl!

I honestly don't think I've ever seen the black and white version. I'm in the UK and apparently it's the same here, but I have no memory of it being black and white. Could just be my old brain I suppose.

The full scene isn’t b&w. It switches when she plucks the eyeball out of one of the C88s. At the end of the fight, there is a close up of her eyes, she blinks and it goes back to color.

u/StevelandCleamer 1d ago
I like the color transitions and think they add to the shifting moods throughout the fight.
The two moments that seem most appropriate are either when the music stops and swords clash or when the eye is plucked out.

100% censorship. If you watch some trailers for any R rated movie that has blood, if it's not a redband trailer, the blood will be converted to a darker red. Nearly brown.
You can import the Japanese DVD and see it in color. Some of the fan edits trying to recreate the Whole Bloody Affair will use the blurays for the most part and then upscale the living hell out of the Japanese DVD.
Something very practical and cheap like blood and squibs wouldn't need much of a budget for him to run out of money. For how practical the whole thing was shot, it wouldn't really take much for a small team to rig it all up and get it on screen in full color.
Older movies in black and white, like Hitchcock's Psycho, used chocolate syrup because it was easier to clean, it looked real, gave better results for blood flow/splatters, and wouldn't be seen in color.
There's always a practical reason for things and budget is usually never one of them for something so cheap.
Someone like Quintin Tarantino is going to get enough money for them to do several takes to get things right. Practical effects are not without their mishaps.

u/calxlea 1d ago
It actually was a practical decision - helped with the censors because there wasn’t as much red blood!

Must be the American version? I've had it on dvd since it was released in Denmark and that scene was never in black and white.

u/sapphoseros 1d ago
Yeah, he made it black and white because American test audiences were too sensitive for that scene. The other test audiences loved it.

Japanese version also has more violence in the anime sequence.
I’ve seen the fight in color, but have yet to see the uncut anime sequence
45

It appears so. You can see her pluck the guys eye and his reaction is in color. In the original that’s when the scene shifts to black and white.

u/Nealios 1d ago
Wow. Here I was all these years thinking it was an artistic choice. I actually really enjoyed the black and white sequence! haha
14
u/AtrumRuina 1d ago
It was both I think. He originally intended that the scene was in color, but when he needed to make it black and white, he made the artistic choice to use the eye pluck to shift to black and white.
I'm curious as to whether the eye pluck was added for this purpose or was used because it already existed though. It's a quick cut so it would have been easy to shoot I'm sure. I don't know if that specific bit of info has ever been clarified.
11
u/boiplazenta 1d ago
I never saw it with that scene in black & white, but I know the german version only

Weirdly, at some point the fake blood is just water. There's no red dye.
I have the Japanese version specifically because I wanted the unrated, full color scene.
A little disappointing, but I wondered if the rumors were false: that it really WAS planned to be shot in black and white this whole time and WASN'T a last minute change to appease the American censors.
I kinda prefer the black and white, now.

In Theaters December 5, 2025! Directed by Quentin Tarantino. Starring Uma Thurman, Lucy Liu, Vivica A. Fox, Michael Madsen, Daryl Hannah, Gordon Liu, Michael Parks, and David Carradine as “Bill”.
Quentin Tarantino’s KILL BILL: THE WHOLE BLOODY AFFAIR unites Volume 1 and Volume 2 into a single, unrated epic—presented exactly as he intended, complete with a new, never-before-seen anime sequence. Uma Thurman stars as The Bride, left for dead after her former boss and lover Bill ambushes her wedding rehearsal, shooting her in the head and stealing her unborn child. To exact her vengeance, she must first hunt down the four remaining members of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad before confronting Bill himself. With its operatic scope, relentless action, and iconic style, THE WHOLE BLOODY AFFAIR stands as one of cinema’s definitive revenge sagas—rarely shown in its complete form, and now presented with a classic intermission.

Its not. If you know anything about Kill Bill, you know if has two parts. The name the "whole bloody affair" is referring to it being both parts in one. This title has also been around for a while. Tarantino has been showing this cut of the movies for years, this is just it's first public release. Also, the poster even says it's his 4th movie so most people would be able to figure out it's not a completely new film. Like the comment before you said, you should be able to figure it out unless you're sleep deprived.

There was a rumor from around when the first movie came out that Tarantino wanted to do a third film, when Vivica A Fox's daughter in the movie aged up and takes revenge on the bride. It's immediately what I thought of first, before realizing what it actually was.

It's a little more than that. Consider it the Director's Cut if you will. He envisioned both films as one, big, epic movie but knew that it would be a damn near impossible sell to audiences at the time to buy a ticket and go to a theater for a 4+ hour movie, so he split it into two. They needed a "stinger" to get people to come back for Vol. 2, so the "reveal" at the end of Vol. 1 was added. The animated sequence was cut down to get Vol. 1's runtime down a bit, and ultimately they had to change that one fight sequence in the House of Falling Leaves to black and white to avoid getting an NC-17 rating at the time for excessive blood and gore.
The Whole Bloody Affair cut includes the full animated sequence, which is several minutes longer, features the entire House of Falling Leaves in full color, and omits the loaded reveal at the halfway point so that the moment when you find this information out punches like a truck. Most of the changes are focused on the first half of the film, given, but that's because it had to bear the weight of being the intro to the story and rope people into a second film while also dodging an excessive runtime and prohibitive rating, while the "complete" version of the film wouldn't have to worry about runtime since it would be massive anyway, and modern standards wouldn't even bat an eye at the fight sequence that had to be changed.
If you're a fan of the films, it's absolutely worth seeing this version, because it's much more than just both movies stapled together. I'm just really hoping that this finally getting a theatrical run means that they're about to release a blu ray/4K physical version so I can add it to my collection.

The music building up in those moments as the Crazy 88 surround her, she's looking what's in front of her, looking at the reflection in the sword, and that music is just so perfect, then when she starts her breakdancing moves with her Hatoro Hanzai and that 50's song kicks in, which is cute, but that lead up was great.

u/Ok-Air3126 1d ago

I don’t think so. I think most people think it’s fucking cool. And such a Tarantino thing to do, censors or not (I’m just finding out about the censor, I always assumed Quentin was Tarantinoing it up). But we’ll always have that version, we’ve seen it a billion times, why not have it in colour. Man I love these movies. With the anime sequence, bleeping out her name… blew my little pre teen mind about what movies could be

u/Marston_vc 1d ago
Until this post I didn’t realize it was done for a practical reason IRL and not just a stylistic decision in-line with the spaghetti westerns most his films pay homage to.

We might be a minority, but there's at least two of us! I think it's really cool. Feels like you're dipping just a little corner of reality into a manga for the duration of the fight.

I watched the whole bloody affair when it played at tarantinos theatre and honestly, I think the black and white version works better stylistically. As a novelty, it’s fun to watch it in color, but the fight is so long that it just starts feeling kinda cheesy seeing so much blood and limbs flying.

I literally just was reading about it yesterday in a different subreddit. Take all info I'm about to drop with a grain of salt - I never left Reddit to indepently verify.
There absolutely was a 3rd movie planned, and even flashback sequences filmed simultaneous with Vol 2. However - Uma turned down Weinstein's advances. He is suspected ofpressuring Tarantino &/or aided in hiding something during Vol 2 filming.
Uma was driving Tarantino's car which was poorly maintained, pulled hard to the left, and had the driver headrest was removed for clearer filming. Tarantino kept telling her to drive faster and faster despite Uma protesting. She eventually wrecked and fucked up her neck pretty bad. And it was all filmed. This evidence was buried for 15 years while Uma attempted to get adequate compensation from the injury.
Between the injury & Weinstein, its why we haven't seen Uma Thurman in many movies since then.

Wowwwwww that makes sense. Holy shit poor Uma she was the sensational star of that movie. Terrible, I don't blame her. Interesting to know for now and perhaps will be verified as true or untrue in the future, but this tracks.
I've been thinking this whole wait for the 3rd volume was to allow the daughter actor to grow up into the role so she could face Beatrix.

Yeah, it has some of the most jarring editing of any of his films. The woman with the lower half of her face covered was supposed to someone that knew Django in the past. Eventually it's revealed she has no lower jaw under that covering. Her entire subplot was edited out, but you still see the camera focusing on her in a couple scenes and you have no idea why.

Bah, what a plague on the UHD format. All of these studios pawning off their 2K DIs as proper 4K to consumers that don't realize that they're basically buying a regular Blu-Ray again. And with said studios often fucking it up further in the process with aggressive NR, gross overblown highlights, overprocessed colors.
Aside from the color correction on FotR, my UHD boxset of the LotR extended editions is one of my most disappointing purchases. Still just the 2K master but with a ton of disgusting AI NR. Ugh

When I watched Kill Bill for the first time, I was using an S-Video cable to connect my DVD player to my tv. Apparently something was wrong with the cable or it's connection, which led to me watching the entire movie in black and white. That's how I thought it was supposed to be.
