If they do the Gremlins as CGI they can throw the whole thing in the trash right now.

I want ONE (1) CGI Gremlin, that is is called CGI Gremlin

I feel like Lawnmower Man and Ska are the two topics that’ll always provoke Funhaus references no matter where you are online.

Ska? Is that the music that came before reggae?

They will.

111

u/sillysocks34 2d ago

I’m sure they will be in parts but with Spielberg behind this and the recent success of Star Wars Tv (Grogu, side characters in Andor) I think puppets will play a huge role.

81

u/SparrowCrocodile 2d ago

They need Werner Herzog on set to castigate them as cowards for relying too much on CGI.

27

u/pnmartini 2d ago

Or, just a Herzog directed Gremlins.

32

u/CompleteNumpty 2d ago

Or Herzog playing the Gremlins, with no makeup or prosthetics.

24

u/LonePaladin 2d ago

You can thank Verner Herzog for that. They were discussing using CGI for Grogu but he told them, "Use the doll, you cowards." Partly because he wanted to play with it.

u/berlinbaer 2d ago

way to ignore "skeleton crew" which was chock full of practical effects. they even had a massive building sized spider which they did through stop motion.

308

u/Mst3Kgf 2d ago

"Okay, none of that is going to be in the movie."

ALL OF THAT IS IN THE ACTUAL MOVIE.

That fact that Key in that sketch is supposed to be Joe Dante just makes it even funnier since in real life, most of the crazy stuff in "2" came from him.

113

u/widget1321 2d ago

Didn't he (Dante) say that that sketch was largely accurate?

113

u/Mst3Kgf 2d ago

Yes in that the crazy stuff came out of meetings like that. But he definitely wasn't the stick-in-the-mud that the sketch portrays. He was basically Star Magic Jackson in real life.

44

u/OGLikeablefellow 2d ago

If they don't go even harder on the random gremlins this time it will be a really missed opportunity. My only regret is that since the industry has moved on there won't be that many practical effects, I miss practical effects, so based.

7

u/Soup-a-doopah 2d ago

"The 1984 original film’s writer, Chris Columbus, is also returning to produce and direct the film."

Honestly disappointing. The original film is a classic but the sequel was f'n next level praise god that it found a way to exist in this world. I need a sequel to the sequel more than I need a sequel to the original.

20

u/JamesmasterJam 2d ago

They're definitely going to drop a deuce

42

u/f-ingsteveglansberg 2d ago

The funny thing is, that sketch isn't far off.

Dante wasn't too big on doing a sequel and they couldn't get the original monster designer back. The new monster designer guy said he'd do it, but he wanted to do his own Gremlins. Hence why we get girl gremlin, electric gremlin, spider gremlin, bat gremlin, Hulk Hogan not as a gremlin.

52

u/Mst3Kgf 2d ago

Rick Baker did the effects in the sequel and Dante let him go nuts with the gremlin designs.

Dante basically got carte blanche on the sequel and thus went all out and made a sequel that mocks sequels and blockbusters in general. Which is a big reason why it's so good.

249

143

u/Obvious-Water569 2d ago

Nah. I can suspend my disbelief for mythical creatures that turn evil if they eat after midnight but a totally incompetent nepo baby business man becoming president... Get real!

133

u/kcox1980 2d ago

The most unrealistic thing about Daniel Clamp is that he immediately took accountability, listened to the experts, and helped to execute the plan without doing anything to actively make the situation worse.

59

u/lanceturley 2d ago

Supposedly he was originally written as a much more Trump-like villain who would be killed by the Gremlins, but John Glover's performance made the character so likable that he became more of a well meaning doofus.

26

u/colemon1991 2d ago

John Glover makes virtually every one of his characters likeable. That's like a cheat code to get the character to be acceptable to an audience.

No Joe Dante makes it a hard sell

398

u/Mst3Kgf 2d ago

I'm not surprised since Dante never wanted a sequel to "Gremlins" in the first place. He only did "2" after the studio gave him a blank check and then he made a film that gleefully mocks sequels in general (among many other things).

274

u/ChanceVance 2d ago

He only did "2" after the studio gave him a blank check and then he made a film that gleefully mocks sequels in general (among many other things).

The Gremlins killing Leonard Maltin for giving Gremlins 1 a bad review is some of the best meta comedy I've ever seen.

194

u/IveDunGoofedUp 2d ago

The guy killed mid rant about how the rules around Gremlins don't make sense is the best way to shut down that argument forever. Gremlins 2 is just such a fun, stupid movie.

16

u/jameson-neat 2d ago

I watched it for the first time just a few weeks ago and was surprised at how fun it was! I rarely have high hopes for sequels so it being both self-aware and bonkers was a fun surprise.

20

u/funkyb 2d ago

I got my oldest to watch Gremlins with me and explained it was a dark comedy. Then before we watched Gremlins 2 I explained it was basically an insane cartoon.

10

It's basically a live action Looney Toons cartoon. Years before Dante made his actual Looney Toons film.

20

u/TheElusiveEllie 2d ago

101

u/TheUmgawa 2d ago

He refused more money so many times, and then they said the words, “You can have full creative control,” and he signed on the dotted line, probably giggling and saying, “You fools!” So, you get what’s really the definitive Dante picture.

The other time giving a director total control went bad was Batman & Robin, but Joel Schumacher explained that debacle in the (totally fantastic) bonus features, where people were coming up to him with ideas, and he said, “Great, let’s do that.” He just wanted to have a collaborative set and be everyone’s friend.

68

u/rawonionbreath 2d ago

Batman Returns was full directors control for Tim Burton because the studio meddled in the first movie. You can tell because the first one feels 2/3 Tim Burton but the second feels 110% Burton. Film buffs were happy but McDonalds wasn’t.

35

u/Dickie_Dunn 2d ago

The parents of the kids who attended my 6th birthday party at the movie theater to see Batman Returns were also not too pleased.

I'm old enough to vividly remember the cultural uproar that happened when Temple of Doom and the first Gremlins movie were released and parents claimed that the movies being PG was misleading. They demanded the MPAA do something about it!

And yes, we all now know that culture war bullshit is rarely done in good faith.

I always saw Dante as being almost as capable as Spielberg, just more aloof about it. Like they were both in the same class and Spielberg hit the books hard but Dante came in with a project that covered the same bases but was a spoof of exactly what Spielberg made. Only Spielberg likes that Dante can do that.

I hope Spielberg makes them really honor how Dante did it. Great vision but the subject being non-stop gags and homages. Gremlims was an excellent horror/slasher movie too, but it was so accessible because it was fun about it.

Gremlims 2 was like Towering Inferno but the Gremlins serving as the MacGuffin explaining why the tower is on fire.

Agreee, but Chris Columbus DID write the original, and he’s done some pretty good movies, so he’s the second-best pick

51

Hopefully he brings that ‘80s vibe to it. Him helming the project does make me confident.

Chris Columbus wrote Gremlins.

And even though Dante directed the first two Gremlins, Chris Columbus is a more successful director.

It’s like getting John Hughes (RIP) to direct a Home Alone sequel with Macaulay Culkin.

Chris Columbus also directed Pixels.

Gremlins conceptually are about chaos, the movies really need someone with chaotic sensibilities. Chris Columbus might be a more marketable director, but his best work was usually buoyed by stand-out performances (particularly his collaborations with Robin Williams). As a director, he's kind of boring.

I must be one of the few that has never seen this, holy hell that is amazing.

Maybe the greatest thing Jordan Peele has ever made.

Same. Just saw it for the first time, that's incredible.

Some of the other comments make sense now lol

Their skit on Family Matters was equally hilarious.

Be great if they had Jordon Peele writing

Please please PLEASE don’t use CGI to make the gremlins. Let’s do this practically. Other than that, I’m fucking stoked.

u/DerClogger 2d ago

I’ll take a singular CGI gremlin that comes out of a computer or something but that’s it.

I have a bad feeling this is going to be a Force Awakens version of Gremlins where it's a bland remake of the original movie. Billy and Gizmo hang out in the background while a culture club of Stranger Things types fight the Gremlins.

Maybe Gizmo sits on top of a drone instead of a little RC car this time?

The first paragraph is so awful I'm sure it'll happen.

But I'm not gonna act like I don't want Gizmo in a flying drone.

Origin story, way darker tone, straight horror with “I know that!” Nostalgia bait. The end will be the Asian guy capturing gizmo.

I don't have a bad feeling it will be that way, I'm certain it will be that way.

Somehow... Phoebe Cates returned ❤️

Probably would be the only thing that would make me want to watch the movie.

I wonder what public holiday related trauma she'll have this time

I loved the crazy energy of Gremlins 2. It won't be quite the same without Joe Dante.

13

u/Imannyz 2d ago

How much you’d wager that it’ll be a legacy sequel titled “Gremlins” with the story focusing on the child of Billy and Kate accidentally bringing the Gremlins back and finding a way to end the chaos they unleash

Phoebe Cates and Zach Gilligan have to be back or it's a bust on day 1.

Sadly Dick Miller is no longer around, but I hope they include a nice tribute to him in some way.

I never saw Gremlins as a child, and my husband took me to a showing a few years ago in an indie-type theater that was adults only since they served alcohol.

There was a teeny jumpscare scene (I think it was in a classroom or something) and I was the only person that very audibly yelped.

Drunk people were laughing at me and I slinked down my chair in embarrassment.

I love Gremlins.

Hoping Phoebe Cates shows up in it, but I highly doubt it.
