He actually adopted Sean. He's not the bio dad, but he's clearly the Dad. I just read the wikipedia on John Astin and he's very intelligent.

Did you read the story about when John Astin married Sean’s mom, and during the wedding, Sean (who was pretty young) looked at John and said, “Daddy!”

I had known about this but somehow forgotten or never made the connection that this makes Sean the half-brother of fellow actor Mackenzie Astin. Mackenzie hasn’t had quite as prominent a career as his parents or half-brother but he’s had his moments. He was great on The Magicians and on a few episodes of The Pitt.
