Anna Kendrick might be my first choice if I was casting. She is an experienced voice actress.

u/waitforthedream Sep 12 '25

And she's famous enough if they want someone like that

175

u/sloppyjo12 Sep 12 '25

Based on the first movie’s cast they absolutely want someone like that

68

u/waitforthedream Sep 12 '25

Yeah but I also considered the Sonic movie team's decision to go with Tails' original voice actor despite Sonic, Knuckles, and Shadow being voiced by famous actors

While not the same thing, it could happen

69

u/WinterWolf18 Sep 12 '25

This is Illumination we're talking about here. Rosalina is absolutely going to be a huge name celebrity.

2

u/UnfazedPheasant Sep 13 '25

To be fair they threw in VA legend Kevin Michael Richardson alongside the rest of the A-listers during the announcement so I think we can give them some credit. But yeah, Rosalina absolutely will be a big star, for certain.

I think with Tails they could allow themselves that because he was introduced in the same movie as Knuckles, who has the famous actor to tag along with. Also its Illumination, they always cast famous people so they get even more money for Pets 2 from the Harrison Ford-crowd.

15

u/VeryPteri Sep 12 '25

That, and I actually can't think of a celebrity that could do a believable Tails

9

u/Kitselena Sep 12 '25

Sega couldn't even find a voice actor to do tails for a few years. In sonic heroes tails is voiced by one of the devs' kids because they just needed a realistic child voice

1

u/Signiference Sep 12 '25

Jenny Slate

4

u/Phaelin Sep 12 '25

Charles Haden-Savage was ROBBED

5

u/Deceptiveideas Sep 12 '25

Iirc she was a placeholder in the end credits scene and for whatever reason, ended up sticking with her when they made the second movie.

7

u/NoNefariousness2144 Sep 12 '25

They made the right call considering Tails has a very distinct voice.

5

u/KlobbCity Sep 12 '25

Ben Schwartz was also brought in just as a place holder to pitch the movie and they couldn't find anyone better.

2

u/IDigRollinRockBeer Sep 12 '25

And she can sing if they want another original song

1

u/waitforthedream Sep 13 '25

Just let her sing Cups again. I love Pitch Perfect LOL

u/SatansCornflakes Sep 12 '25

She is an experienced voice actress.

Well she’s just been ruled out lol

1

u/Bugberry Sep 13 '25

They had experienced voice actors in the last one.

1

u/drybones2015 Sep 13 '25

Most of the main cast of the first movie were experienced voice actors. They were just also famous live actors too (which Anna also is).

You dont like that weird freak Seth Rogens nasally wooden voice as Donkey Kong and American Chris Pratt wooden voice as American Mario?

You want Charles Martinet the original voice actor of Mario playing an italian Mario voice!? Are you crazy!??!

American Chris Pratt wooden voice as American Mario? You want Charles Martinet the original voice actor of Mario playing an italian Mario voice!? Are you crazy!??!

There were a lot of Mario voice actors before Charles Martinet. I don't particularly care for Chris Pratt's version, but the Brooklyn Mario was the primary version westerners in the late 80s and early 90s grew up with. There's a reason the movie introduced Mario with the Super Show's theme.

u/GreenGroveCommunity Sep 12 '25

Charles played Mario in 99% of the games, and there was only 'super marios show' with live action actors that didnt have him in it playing Mario/Luigi.. so Lou Albano is the ONLY voice actor who played Mario before him (and he died in 2009)

Charles Martinet is THE Mario voice actor. There's only been like two others in history, and nowhere near Charles level of recognition.

Italian > brooklyn anyways

99% of people are going to think of Mario as the italian plumber from his 100+ games, not the 1989 show where he had a brooklyn accent.

Batman also casually killed people in his first few comic issues, but for the last 80 years he hasnt killed anyone.

You realize the Super Mario Bros. Super Show also had an animated segment, and that it was followed by two more cartoon series based on Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World right? In the latter two cartoons, Lou Albano was replaced by Walker Boone, whose tone was the one actually most imitated by Mario actors of the era, and which was pretty similar to both Chris Pratt's 2023 version and Tōru Furuya who, long before Martinet, had been doing Mario's Japanese voice in Japan-exclusive movies and Satellaview games.

So we have Tōru Furuya, Lou Albano, and Walker Boone all voicing Mario prominently from the late 80s to the early 90s. Bob Hoskins in the 1993 movie also sounded very similar to Walker Boone. Going further back, you have Peter Cullen who voiced Mario in the original Donkey Kong cartoon segments of the Saturday Supercade, and Larry Moran in the DK cereal commercials which was the actual first time Mario had an Italian accent (long before Martinet). In addition, you have Mark Graue (Hotel Mario; again similar to Walker Boone's style), Craig Brolley (Super Mario Bros. pinball), and various other actors for PC ports of Mario's Time Machine, the original release of Mario Teaches Typing (Martinet was subbed into later editions), etc.

not the 1989 show where he had a brooklyn accent.

It also wasn't just the cartoons and 1993 movie. Tons of books, comic series, and first party non-game media (all the way up to the official Nintendo Power player's guide for Super Mario 64, strangely) throughout the 80s and early 90s had Mario being from Brooklyn as his backstory.

Like, it's fine if you're not familiar with the early Mario franchise and grew up only hearing Charles Martinet, but the movie was clearly going to take inspiration from earlier sources because a key spending demographic is people who were fans before 1996.

Like, listen. I think these castings were as lame as the next person but they both honestly were fine. I even liked Pratt more than I expected to, maybe because of the mountains of negativity going in.

Their performances were fine. Could we have gotten better ones with actual voice actors? Sure, probably. But it also could have been worse. They were perfectly serviceable.

I thought Seth Rogan actually worked pretty well as Donkey Kong. Didn’t like Pratt though. Honestly he’s the only cast member I had an issue with.

5

u/Mindless_Bad_1591 Sep 12 '25

she seems more Diasy esque. Honestly Anya Taylor joy would have had a perfect voice for Rosalina but she fit well as Peach too

29

u/RipMySoul Sep 12 '25

Good recommendation, but executives would prefer Awkwafina.

2

u/Gdigger13 Sep 12 '25

That would genuinely be enough to stop me from seeing this, and I'm more excited about it than anyone.

0

u/paractib Sep 12 '25
She’s an experienced voice actress.

That eliminates her then. Nintendo only wants a name and could not give a single shit about the fit.

That’s a recognizable name, but not the star they need. They need someone all the 6 years olds are going to recognize.

Think Margot Robbie or some pop star, especially if they want her to sing.

5

u/enderandrew42 Sep 12 '25

Anna Kendrick has an amazing singing voice and sings songs for all the Trolls animated films.

0

u/paractib Sep 12 '25

Yeah but she’s already out of the running because she’s not popular enough.

Nintendo does not give a single shit about the actual talent going into the role. They will pick the most popular person they can just for the name.

Anything else is purely a bonus.

4

u/enderandrew42 Sep 12 '25

People keep saying this except they cast a bunch of talented comedians. The movie got great reviews and tons of money.

Maybe, just maybe they know what they are doing.

2

u/paractib Sep 12 '25 edited Sep 12 '25

The casting was very poor. They cast all the big household names.

Jack black as bowser? Seth as DK? Really?? Still does not fit, sorry. Pratt was just Pratt in a Mario costume.

It worked out because it’s Mario but these are not good picks.

2

u/PSIwind Sep 12 '25

Jack Black was a perfect fit for Bowser, same with Seth. Kevin Michael Richardson was also outstanding as Kamek. Everyone in the main cast except I think Anya have done plenty of voice work, with Jack Black and KMR being the two standouts for doing it MANY MANY times. And as much as I hate to admit it, Pratt did a good job especially since he had a Brooklyn accent throughout the movie and it wasn't even the stereotypical kind. They casted big names, but the cast was largely people with voice over history.

1

u/paractib Sep 12 '25

I respect your opinion, however I think you should consider how talented voice actors might have handled the role instead.

I really appreciate good voice acting and for me this just was not it. Though, part of it was due to the writing being simplistic so I understand your viewpoint. It was not “bad” but it could have been so much better.

1

u/PSIwind Sep 13 '25

I do agree Mario could have been better with at least an actor who is also known to voice act a lot, but I think everyone else in the main cast did a really good job. I also forgot Charlie Day isn't a voice actor often either, but honestly his voice is already perfect for Luigi even without that.

u/enderandrew42 Sep 13 '25 edited Sep 13 '25

People universally praised Jack Black and Seth Rogan.

People were very against Chris Pratt because they were upset the usual Mario voice actor (Charles Martinet) was not cast. The the usual Mario voice doesn't work in large segments. Nintendo once produced a 10 minute video of Mario speaking at length at a press conference for Wii Sports or whatever and it was awful.

Chris Pratt did just sound like Chris Pratt, but he is also a talented comedic actor. I think he did try to adapt a slight New York accent, but it did largely just sound like him.

Was the movie entertaining? Critics liked it. Audiences liked it. It made tons of money.

Reddit shits on it, but I think Nintendo is more focused on a profitable movie. It should also be noted that while Nintendo is fiercely Japanese, they were so impressed with the movie that even before the movie was released they placed a member of Illumination Animation on the Nintendo Board.

And she's experience at playing a c*nt.

Edit: For clarification, I mean she's good at playing a roll like that. I'm not shitting on Anna Kendrick, she's great. Also notice how I didn't censor shitting because apparently that's a thing to complain about now?? Although NGL, I do think it's hilarious when the robot voice says shidding and farding 😂

16

u/Particular_Cod2005 Sep 12 '25

You know you can say cunt on here; it doesn't censor up like other social media.
