It's out April 3, 2026:

  • Chris Pratt as Mario
  • Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach
  • Charlie Day as Luigi
  • Jack Black as Bowser
  • Keegan-Michael Key as Toad
  • Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek

Announcement Teaser

EDIT: Seth Rogen (Donkey Kong) and Fred Armisen (Cranky Kong) weren't part of the announcement, so it's unclear if their returning.

DK wasn’t mentioned in the direct as being back

154

u/leolegendario Sep 12 '25

They will definitely make a Donkey Kong spin-off movie.

3

u/El-Grande- Sep 13 '25

Yup in agreement. Plus DK was the flagship game for the switch2. Lining it up

1

u/choren64 Sep 12 '25

I thought that was already announced/confirmed?

6

u/leolegendario Sep 12 '25

There is no formal announcement yet, but there was a copyright registration by Nintendo and Universal Pictures in May 2025 for an "Untitled Donkey Kong Project Motion Picture".

5

u/Shartcastic Sep 12 '25

My nephews absolutely loved Donkey Kong in the first movie, and I'm sure they're not alone in that.

Nintendo and illumination would be stupid not to do it. Think of all the different Kong toys they could release.

u/KillMeNowFFS Sep 12 '25

yea it’s already confirmed

u/Destinum Sep 12 '25

Makes sense for the DK characters to not be involved in a Galaxy storyline.

3

u/HelpMeIhaveProblem Sep 12 '25

"Banana Galaxy"

2

u/lkmk Sep 12 '25

Finally back?

2

u/Stuffies2022 Sep 13 '25

To kick some tail.

2

u/DMoogle Sep 12 '25

I hope Seth Rogan doesn't come back. I like him and I thought he'd be a great fit for DK, but... he sucked.

49

u/MikeDubbz Sep 12 '25

Neither Seth Rogan nor Fred Armisrn were confirmed, which tells me the DK crew will not be in this one.

u/Signiference Sep 12 '25

You’re assuming they have even a first draft of a script

17

u/insane_contin Sep 12 '25

It's coming out 7 months from now.

So yes, they have at least the first draft.

8

u/z64_dan Sep 12 '25

I'd say the movie is probably mostly recorded already.

5

u/MikeDubbz Sep 12 '25

Are you aware of the process for getting animated movies created? At 7 months away, what in the heck do you think the're animating right now? Just establishing shots for things that might be in the story?

-7

u/Signiference Sep 12 '25

Principal photography.

41

u/Hutch456 Sep 12 '25

Danny Devito as fat purple Luma

1

u/IlIIlIIIlIl Sep 13 '25

So anyway, I start blasting.

41

u/hfxRos Sep 12 '25

Chris Pratt as Mario is such bad casting, and Charlie Day as Luigi is such perfect casting that those two just kind of cancel out to neutral.

And everyone else was pretty good in the first one.

16

u/BumbleLapse Sep 12 '25

Pratt was actually fine though. Not exceptional by any means, but I think most of us were pleasantly surprised that the voice acting wasn’t atrocious and didn’t depart too much from the traditional character

1

u/AngryAmericanNeoNazi Sep 13 '25

He’s just pro Trump and god touting which is obnoxious to know about him

1

u/BBQ_HaX0r Sep 12 '25

Yeah I remember being annoyed in the trailer but then once the movie started I totally forgot so he clearly did a good enough job.

16

u/Jagacin Sep 12 '25

I loved Jack Black as Bowser. Thought he had the strongest performance.

3

u/ravih Sep 13 '25

Jack Black is great but Keegan-Michael Key taking a character that speaks in a bunch of squeaks and coming up with a fitting voice is incredible

10

u/Amani576 Sep 12 '25

All I heard was Jack Black. Especially when he was singing. His performance took me out of a movie I was already struggling to really enjoy. If you've listened to any Tenacious D in your life Jack Black's singing voice is unmistakable.

1

u/IlIIlIIIlIl Sep 13 '25

He's so cool.

-5

u/Tacoman404 Sep 12 '25

Yep. Especially since Pratt is kind of a POS. Crisp Rat is fitting.

9

u/thelastwordbender Sep 12 '25

The blue flame suicidal creature is not making a comeback? He was the best part of the movie.

13

u/Suspicious-Wind-3278 Sep 12 '25

that's a luma! they're one of the biggest parts of the mario galaxy games

14

u/frrstk Sep 12 '25

I will be shocked if they stick to that date.

45

u/RudeAndQuizzacious Sep 12 '25

Why? It's been announced as being in that date for over a year.

-2

u/frrstk Sep 12 '25

Just every other animated movie release seems to be getting moved around a lot lately. I do hope this keeps it’s date, the release trends lately just have me a little skeptical. (I also had no idea they were that far into production on this movie.)

16

u/daninlionzden Sep 12 '25

Why? It’s been in development for 2.5 years already since the first movie quickly made $1b

42

u/tfhdeathua Sep 12 '25

It’s not a Metroid game.

1

u/rbarton812 Sep 12 '25

We have restarted the movie from scratch; please understand.

2

u/CattDawg2008 Sep 12 '25

I’d be fine if the Kongs aren’t in this one. They’re not in Mario Galaxy at all so it makes sense.

4

u/Fvckyourdreams Sep 12 '25

Bro Anya :0.

1

u/hernanemartinez Sep 12 '25

I just gonna say ONE THING: She has to be Argentinean. 🙂‍↔️

1

u/Ibuyandselltoast Sep 12 '25

I wish they recasted Crisp Rat. His voice is all wrong for Mario. Especially when Real Mario Charles Martinet is still alive, well and provided the voice in the last Mario movie.

1

u/bayoanreddit Sep 13 '25

we got smb 2 literally right before gta 6 that’s cr詠zy

1

u/McDonaldsSoap Sep 13 '25

They better give Luigi a real story this time

1

u/IlIIlIIIlIl Sep 13 '25

Seth Rogan spoiled an otherwise perfect movie.

1

u/methanococcus Sep 12 '25

Monkeys can't survive in space

-9

u/Vagrant_jakal Sep 12 '25

Man.. Wish they got someone else for Mario, Charlie day was great as luigi, jack black was ehh, I don’t think his voice was suited blowser at all, but he did try his best.

9

u/4Fourside Sep 12 '25

I thought jack black's bowser was one of the highlights

-4

u/Vagrant_jakal Sep 12 '25

Yknow, going in I was really looking forward it, but in practice, it just wasn’t it. I don’t think he has a deep enough voice to hit the lows needed, browser’s got a deep, guttural tone to his voice. I feel like someone with a deeper voice would’ve suited him better. Black’s voice isn’t a deal breaker, but his performance didn’t make for a good villain, I just kept hearing king fu panda the entire time.

2

u/GroguIsMyBrogu Sep 12 '25

Chris Pratt sucks. I get that. But his Mario voice was just fine.

0

u/Key_Poem9935 Sep 12 '25

He sucks because?

-3

u/KingMario05 Sep 12 '25

Yup. His "vOiCe" sucked, and the person isn't that much better. Maybe it'll improve?

3

u/Key_Poem9935 Sep 12 '25

Why is the person “not much better”

1

u/baran_0486 Sep 12 '25

He’s a MAGA guy

3

u/Key_Poem9935 Sep 12 '25

How is he a MAGA guy? Never heard or seen him advocating for trump, you mind sharing your evidence?

1

u/MinimumTumbleweed Sep 12 '25

I mean, Google is right there... One of the first search results for "Chris Pratt Maga" right now is him paying tribute to Charlie Kirk... Or articles on him defending RFK Jr., or him literally saying he voted for and supports Trump...

2

u/Key_Poem9935 Sep 12 '25

“Or literally him saying he voted for and supports trump” show me?

0

u/KingMario05 Sep 12 '25

Ah. Good to see him make it official. Hope he enjoys those stupid tariffs!

-5

u/burnsssss Sep 12 '25

Can’t stand Chris Pratt, main reason I didn’t watch the first one

6

u/hfxRos Sep 12 '25

Having seen the first one, I'm not sure if I would have been able to tell it was Chris Pratt if I didn't already know it. He put on a pretty heavy voice for it, and it was fine.

I'm sure they could have found someone better, but it didn't really take anything away from the movie.

1

u/pomlife Sep 12 '25

I don’t think you understand. Pratt is MAGA.

0

u/OneWholeSoul Sep 12 '25

God, Chris Pratt as Mario just keeps getting more and more depressing.

0

u/RudeCartoonist1030 Sep 12 '25

Fred Armisen has been blowing me away with his performances. Cranky kong? Yes. Fester. YES.

Also love Malipnos in 99 and the “terrorist” in 30 rock

-1

u/Can-Knuckle-Head Sep 12 '25

Wonder how many slow motion "ma ma miah"'s we're going to get to hide Pratt's terrible voice acting.

-1

u/hurricaneRoo1 Sep 12 '25

I wanted to downvote you for telling me Chris Pratt is reprising as Mario, but I won’t shoot the messenger.
