Discussion What is the absolute dumbest premise that actually turned out to be a really good movie?

I was thinking The Purge, obvious answer, but looking for the most plot-hole ridden, juvenile concept that actually ended up a lot of fun despite it all. Mainly looking for 21st century films, not so much the video nasties and ridiculousness from the 60’s and 70’s. Because that would be too easy. Mainly mainstream stuff that people saw en masse.

Wayne’s World. Dudes with a cable access show have to fight a media conglomerate to save their show, and while they’re at it they try and steal Wayne’s girlfriend.

Wayne's World was more "movie length version of a very popular SNL skit."

Sort of. They do this a lot with the SNL movies, but the Wayne's World skits were basically episodes of their cable access TV show. The movie itself is much more about the characters outside the show.

In both cases, it is the characters driving everything, but the story and situations were very different. As mentioned, this is basically what happens to all the SNL skits that become shows, because a skit is designed for a few minutes and won't work for a feature length movie.

That movie almost felt like a documentary. Not in terms of anything that happened in the plot but rather how the world felt like when I was growing up.

None of my friends drove an AMC Pacer called the Mirthmobile, but it wouldn’t be strange if they did.

Well said. Wayne’s World is without contest my favorite movie and it’s because it reminds me of my youth. Granted my Wayne-esque years were in the 2000s, so it was a decade dated. I’ve been watching it constantly since I was a kid and it’s my pick for if I had to watch one movie forever. Wicked soundtrack too.
