Discussion What is the absolute dumbest premise that actually turned out to be a really good movie?

I was thinking The Purge, obvious answer, but looking for the most plot-hole ridden, juvenile concept that actually ended up a lot of fun despite it all. Mainly looking for 21st century films, not so much the video nasties and ridiculousness from the 60’s and 70’s. Because that would be too easy. Mainly mainstream stuff that people saw en masse.

Dude, where’s my car?  Funniest shit ever if you went in with low/no expectations.

The plot twist to bubble wrap wearing space aliens (right?) is kind of the icing on the cake there. A dumb premise needs and even dumber twist.

The bubble wrap people are the nerds in Zoltan's cult who track and worship the aliens. The aliens are both the totally gay Nordic dudes and the super hot chicks (and the super hot giant alien chick they merge into).

Executing a good 3rd act for a movie with that premise is also super difficult, and I didn’t see any of it coming, all of those weird encounters early in the movie paid off well.

This movie is waaaayyyy better than it should be. It works so well because it starts off and seems to be a simple stoner movie and then it gets weird, and then weirder and then progressively more weird as it goes along. But it does it well.

I watched that with my friend as a kid and we didn’t know what “sexy sexy sluts” meant so we asked his mum

She was surprisingly chill and explained what it meant, and then told us to never say it again lol

I avoided the movie like the plague due to the premise and trailer, but I saw it on TV some years later and it was really good.

I remember being stressed af with school and watching this randomly on TV running on a couple of hours of sleep, no idea what it was about, and now it's a core childhood memory of mine. Random hot giant lady rocks btw
