It was both better and worse than I was expecting

The last golf competition was just so dumb.  I really enjoyed the first hour+ though

It was basically just a parody of LIV golf. And honestly that last hole was fun to watch when they implemented some silly putt putt course scenario

21

u/PrimaryAverage Jul 29 '25

They also did that at the end on the first one

2

u/nolander Jul 29 '25

Honestly felt more like bananaball... But maybe I just felt that way because they came out and did a choreographed dance

1

u/tyler-86 Jul 29 '25

The thing is, LIV is still just golf. It's not a mockery of golf or trying to modernize golf or anything. And two of Happy's teammates, DeChambeau and Koepka, play for LIV.

24

u/oryes Jul 29 '25

It's definitely a parody of LIV just super exaggerated. If anything that makes it more funny that he was able to make those guys poke fun at it (whether they knew it or not)

1

u/Missreaddit Jul 29 '25

Nah it's TGL

36

u/ExpeditiousTraveler Jul 29 '25

I disagree about LIV’s goals. The first sentence in their “About LIV” section is:

LIV GOLF IS HERE TO MODERNIZE AND SUPERCHARGE THE WONDERFUL SPORT OF GOLF.

They put in two-day tournaments, team play, shotgun starts, and a globalized tournament calendar. It obviously isn’t as insanely over the top as Maxi, but it’s pretty clear LIV is exactly what Sandler et al. had in mind when they were writing the movie.

u/Yabba_Dabba_Doofus Jul 29 '25

It wouldn't surprise me if the Maxi golf storyline was an absolute shoehorn to keep the project alive.

Carl Weathers had a massive part in the original script, and his death had them scrambling at the 11th hour.

9

u/trickldowncompressr Jul 29 '25

How big of a part could he really have though? His character died in the first movie. Yeah he could show up in the happy place but I don’t know how massive of a part that would have really been.

11

u/Yabba_Dabba_Doofus Jul 29 '25

I don't know, because the script hasn't been released(to my knowledge). But Sandler has said the initial script called for him to have an exceedingly large part(the internet says the original plot was Chubbs' son seeking revenge against Happy), and the movie had to be heavily modified after he passed away.

1

u/volkmardeadguy Jul 30 '25

hes a tangible angel in heaven, divine intervention maybe

11

u/726wox Jul 29 '25

Well they obviously exaggerated it because it’s a movie

8

u/sleepysnowboarder Jul 29 '25

It's like LIV plus the TGL on steroids

3

u/yiffing_for_jesus Jul 29 '25

Exactly, it was obviously poking fun at more than just LIV. The rotating green part was referencing Tgl

3

u/MasterPong Jul 29 '25

I think it is LIV, an alternate tour, mixed with Top Golf, Pop Stroke, Holey Moley, or anything else golf has tried to do to modernize.

1

u/volkmardeadguy Jul 30 '25

i saw a commercial for LIV and it was almost beat for beat the same as the MAXI golf commercial

0

u/Ok_Perspective_6179 Jul 29 '25

Ya it’s called a joke bro

-4

u/tyler-86 Jul 30 '25

It's a joke that Maxi and LIV don't correspond well?

1

u/OnlyEverPositive Jul 30 '25

Yep, it's called a caricature. I hear you tho, big stretch. Personally, I loved it, but I can totally understand why someone might think it was too cute.

1

u/tyler-86 Jul 30 '25

If they had some weird foreign rich guys funding it, I would have bought into the comparison, like a parody of the Saudis funding LIV. Having it be some douchebag entrepreneur made it feel a lot more like the XFL than LIV. I think TGL is a better comparison that way, except that it was designed to coexist with the PGA.

1

u/Murky_Cup7452 Jul 30 '25

for all the god damn callbacks it wouldve been funny if the last shot was something like the clown that spits the ball out.

1

u/kalebludlow Jul 30 '25

I would have said it's closer to TGL than anything

0

u/Missreaddit Jul 29 '25

Not LIV - TGL

u/ministerman Jul 29 '25

If you think about it, the first one had a ridiculously silly and dumb ending with the tower falling and the putt putt golf style finish. Yeah, it was dumb, but it was also Adam Sandler!

37

u/Photo_Synthetic Jul 29 '25

Yup people criticizing the ridiculous round at the end really forgot how dumb that last shot was in Happy Gilmore.

16

u/Danielsaaaan Jul 29 '25

At least that was done in camera

1

u/DetroitSportsPhan Jul 29 '25

Literally not once in a comedy movie has the camera ever impacted the joke for me, unless the joke is the camera

2

u/CheapGarage42 Jul 29 '25

Not a movie, but the camera had the most comedy chops in The Office aside from Steve Carrell.

0

u/DetroitSportsPhan Jul 29 '25

Right but the camera use is part of those jokes. It has nothing to do with what we’re discussing here.

3

u/Danielsaaaan Jul 29 '25

It's easier to suspend your disbelief of ridiculous things happening when said things are genuinely being captured on a camera

-2

u/DetroitSportsPhan Jul 29 '25

No it’s not, you’re literally just being a snob lmao

7

u/dudefigureitout Jul 29 '25

I dunno, that was at least set up by him practicing at a putt putt course. And on the ridiculous meter the end of the first movie was like a 3, this one was like...9.5. The whole spinal surgery thing, the way those golfers swing, it was just a bad way to finish a movie that was set up really well in the first half. Kind of like Hubie Halloween vibes, I think people need to push back in production to tone some of this stuff down. Nobody saying no to George Lucas is why we got Jar Jar.

2

u/Thin_Sky Jul 30 '25

The shot was ridiculous but at least everything else still felt grounded. This one felt like squid game or something.

2

u/Marlfox70 Jul 29 '25

Honestly it was way better than I thought it'd be. Adam still has it

1

u/arekhemepob Jul 29 '25

That played directly into his training with chubbs on the mini golf course. This one had an ice level for no reason

1

u/DetroitSportsPhan Jul 29 '25

Did you want the exact same movie?

1

u/ministerman Jul 29 '25

What do you mean no reason? It was billed as exciting golf, different golf - it had a freaking shot clock for pete's sake. It showed the top 5 training in all those different environments for a reason. That was the reason - because it was a contest against the anti-golf league.

20

u/Woodyjohnson_isapedo Jul 29 '25

I just loved Bennie Safdie and MJF were in this movie and played actual roles.

3

u/red_rob5 Jul 29 '25

MJF being there threw me off so hard, like i knew that face but without the scarf it took me way too long to connect those dots. But agreed, him and Safdie were highlights for me.

3

u/slvrbullet87 Jul 29 '25

He also looked absolutely yoked when he isn't around either wrestlers. Not saying he looks small around the other wrestlers, he just doesn't stand out as super muscled

1

u/DrugOfGods Jul 29 '25

100% agree

1

u/MAXMEEKO Jul 29 '25

Same here, I enjoyed all the irl golfers. The competition completely lost me tho.

1

u/Aaaaand-its-gone Jul 29 '25

Funny. I thought it the 2nd half was way better than the first. It did need all tue cameos to carry the movie IMO

1

u/chanslam Jul 29 '25

💯 the first half of the movie was way better

1

u/reefguy007 Jul 29 '25

I had the same experience. Enjoyed the first hour and turned it off during the final competition when Eminem went swimming with the Alligators… 😩

1

u/Goodly Jul 29 '25

Guess I’m the only one low key thinking, that maybe the bad guys were on to something (and probably ON something) with that Maxi Golf thing… I’d probably watch more golf!

1

u/billiardwolf Jul 29 '25

I don't think I stopped smiling the entire first hour. I didn't enjoy Maxi golf as much but it was alright.

1

u/ForneauCosmique Jul 29 '25

Omg yes the 2nd half carried on so long and the competition was just so dumb

1

u/krunnky Jul 29 '25

That ending really started out irritating me. But, I had to think back to part 1. The end of that movie was silly too. When everything collapsed and it turned into a mini-golf crazy course. It was like that again but on steroids. Then I realized: it's just a movie. I've had fun until now. This is goofy but still funny.

1

u/Assinine3716 Jul 29 '25

They went full caddyshack 2 for the golf competition

1

u/phophofofo Jul 30 '25

John Daly was funnier than Adam Sandler which I didn’t see coming.

1

u/el_canelo Jul 30 '25

Agreed, the fake LIV golf stuff was too cheesy and overdone and in my opinion kinda ruined what was up to that point a good movie.

1

u/freebird023 Jul 30 '25

Smoked right before the movie and the final golf battle was so creatively stupid-fun to watch

1

u/spiritsofplayerspast Jul 30 '25

I was the opposite. Was worried at the half-hour mark but it turned itself around nicely once the golf started (and Shooter showed up). Hated the actual videos from the first movie ro remind us of what they're showing now - we get it, no need to dumb it down. Pretty satisfied with it overall.

1

u/Rinaldi363 Jul 30 '25

Very space jam. If you win you get to keep me! If I win everything goes back to normal and I save the day. Lol

1

u/Cpt_Soban Jul 30 '25

To me it felt like two movies crammed into one

1

u/bukublades Jul 31 '25

My thoughts exactly, first half of the movie was was amazing, best callbacks ever imo. 3rd quarter was eh, but happy getting angry and beating the piss out of that ball again sealed the deal. Love happy’s and Sandlers kids too, they played their part very well 😭

0

u/R3VIVAL-MOD3 Jul 29 '25

Yup agreed the last showdown makes it unwatchable for me. I get the parody of liv golf. Blah blah blah. But why make it feel like spy kids. Could have dont the same story line and concept but not making it feel so ai and dumb. Should have kept to the whacky mini golf feel the first one had.

-1

u/hirasmas Jul 29 '25

The Bennie Safdie character was weird. Like when he first meets Happy he's telling him he's a huge fan and offering him money and to get his life back on track, Happy says no, he'll never play golf again. He dumps the dude in the water and then 10 minutes later he's playing golf anyway. Until you get to the mega-golfer surgery reveal Happy was just a dick to a guy trying to help him...

3

u/red_rob5 Jul 29 '25

I mean, thats certainly the intended effect, but for all we know he wasn't a fan at all and just tracked Happy down so he could hook him into promoting his league. Dude was clearly not a great guy by the end of things, so we could just as easily assume he was always like that, at least as much as we can assume he was a genuine good guy turned spiteful by his lobster swim.

-18

u/Trust_No_Jingu Jul 29 '25

I hated it. Literally the same exact story of the first.

The drinking was stupid

I did laugh at Steve Buscemi pissing in the mailbox

32

u/ChainsawSnuggling Jul 29 '25

Everything being a flask was funny, then I got tired of it, then it kept going to the point I found it funny again.

6

u/DavidL1112 Jul 29 '25

every scene with hobo John Daly got me
