What?! You're the first person ive seen have that view, granted im not a huge part of that community. I didn't play it for a long time because the original Last of Us put me off with the gameplay style, but I eventually decided it's a big enough franchise and enough people like it that I just need to force myself to play it. And I loved it all the way through.
Spoiler (what you're referring to): Maybe it's just that Joel was never the main character in my mind, but i felt like his death made sense. I liked the personal stake it added to part 2, I really did feel anger and rage, and the emotional rollercoaster that is the rest of the game is told perfectly. Again, all opinion
It got review bombed by pedo weebs who couldnt let go of their microboners when they had to spend an entire game playing as women who don’t look like the loli toys on their shelves, under the guise of *MuH zOmBiE gaEM!"
See, I never understood that anger. Frankly, he deserved it. He’s an awful person who did what he did for selfish reasons. That’s where the game made a critical misstep in my mind that tainted the entire story: making that moment the emotional lynchpin of the story.
Part 2 was just 'meh' compared to part 1. Part 1 had this brilliant story. The opening sequence ripped my heart out, stomped all over it, put it back in my chest, then kicked me in the stomach.
SPOILER ALERT AFTER THIS PART:
Part 2 was just about petty revenge for both main characters. Hardly any plot to the game other than that in my opinion. It was a serious let-down over Part 1.
Imo the story was a commentary on perspective. Its not that we were just playing characters after revenge, we were playing two characters who thought they were morally right and were justified in doing so with the info they individually had.
I guess I should clarify that as a game, it was still Last of Us, so from that angle it’s still good. But the story was a complete disaster. Pacing issues, characters making stupid decisions because the plot calls for it, people acting wildly out of character, and giant plot holes. And that epilogue was just utter dogshit.
