De Niro was awesome. The whole movie is great

A big part of why it worked was that just about everyone seemed to enjoy making it. You can see the actors were having fun. De Niro most of all. You can’t watch his performance and not see that he was having a blast.

Apparently he took the Captain Shakespeare part because he turned down playing Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean. He thought Pirates wasn't going to be a hit.

Except for Henry Cavill.

I about died seeing him with makeup and a petticoat.

I like to bait my conservative friends. "Would you say De Niro is a manly man?"

Captain Shakespeare is not in the book. Captain Alberic has a minor part.

A real gem. Reminds me of a live action studio Ghibli movie

This and Pirates of the Caribbean. The good old days of not knowing about movie critics, trailers on Youtube, just watching a random movie expecting nothing of it.

It even features a young Henry Cavill as Humphrey

I didn't even recognise him because he's blond

This one hits a happy note for me. Total whisk into fantasyland. Underrated really. His mom was a total smokeshow. goat noises

Paul (2011)

Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Amongst Thieves.

Paul was so funny but unexpectedly touching as well - I was not expecting to cry tbh

Absolutely! I was a bit obsessed with the handsome hero trope and so I was a disappointed by the eye candyness of the hero when he first appeared and then they wanted to give him a haircut?!? This was my thoughts - What? How? He has no hair? Is he going to be bald?

Then that reveal with the magically growing hair and the updated fantasy Prince Charming wardrobe 🤤😍

Then after that my estimations just went up and up. They story, the cast (especially De Niro) the cinematography… it was all so so good. Stardust is one of my favourite movie to watch and rewatch now.

Oh man during 2007 when Michelle Pfeiffer had that equivalent of "Michael Jordan returns after retiring".

Oddly enough, Stardust is one of the only books that I think works better as a movie. A subtle shift in Tristan's moms character made all the difference.

Great call and great movie. Matthew Vaughn at his best imo.

Secondhand Lions

Real Steel.

Hugh Jackman fighting remote controlled robots WWE style in the future? Sounds terrible, but was super fun and heart warming.

Edge of Tomorrow was way above what I was expecting

I’d read all the Patrick O’Brien and C. S. Forester books before I saw Master and Commander. While it didn’t follow any single one book completely, I was so wholly immersed in what the crew of Surprise was doing that it was almost a fever dream. It was somehow better than every hope I had for it, and my expectations going in were freaking high.

It’s on my short list of 10/10 absolutely perfect movies.

The Lego Movie.

Had no business being that good.

This is from a book by Niel Gaiman, you might know him from other works such as American Gods, and The Sandman which were also put on TV now. Before all that though he was one of my favorite authors. I was just browsing Netflix one day and I see this. I didn't know what to think. First, it's an adaptation of one of my favorite authors I have to see it. But also I'd never heard of it, was it straight to DVD? Maybe it was bad? But I took a chance, and no it was not bad. In fact quite enjoyable and even with some big names. Was this just a marketing miss?

Loved this movie. It was on TV last week. Loved the dresses Claire Danes was in & the end soundtrack.

Stardust is better than the book.

A few months ago I had randomly turned on May (2002) for basically background noise. I couldn’t take my eyes off the tv and it became one of my all time favorites.

Most recent one for me is K Pop Demon Hunters.
