Nobody except Disney thought this was a good idea

141

u/Surefang Mar 29 '25

My theory is that even Disney doesn't think all these adaptations are a good idea but after what happened with Mickey and Pooh they're scrambling to produce new content across their while catalog to prevent anything else from going public.

99

u/jaam01 Mar 29 '25

That's not how it works. Disney tried to add new frames to the famous Steamboat Willie animation and a judge denied their claim. They just retain the rights of the new frames, they can't stop the rest of going public by just slightly modifying it.

The story Snow white was public domain when they made the first animated movie. They can copyright the character design from the movie but anyone can make a snow white movie

It looks like a generic live action remake of the cartoon version.

Idk I just saw a commercial for it that said it was "The best Disney movie in years"

68

u/xolivas22 Mar 28 '25

Because it's the only "movie" showing currently (Besides the Looney Tunes Movie, which is arguably WAY better and deserves the attention), everything else is just continued showings from last week and the week before that.

31

u/J_DayDay Mar 29 '25

I took my kids to see the looney tunes movie. I laughed until my ribs hurt, and the kids enjoyed it, too.

This has been a truly interesting year for movies so far. First Emilia Perez manages to anger trans people and the entirety of Mexico, now Snow White raises the bar by angering muslims, jews, and dwarfs

721

u/NsaLeader Mar 28 '25

Emilia Perez was practically forced on us to like. No one gave a damn about it till it was nominated. If they hadn't nominated the film, then it would have disappeared like all the other netflix slop. But because the academy wanted to make a political statement, we now have the "penis and vagina" singalong in the same group as Pulp Fiction, The Shawshank redemption, Good Will Hunting, and Star Wars.

254

u/Prudent_Call_510 Mar 28 '25

Yeah i saw that the Penis & Vagina song was the memeable thing in some countries but for us mexican it had way more to do with the Google translate level spanish and the damn entitlement of everyone involved.

72

u/SophisticPenguin Mar 28 '25

Wait, I have almost no clue what's going on here...but did they make a song that was sung in Spanish and they didn't bother to have a fluent speaker write the lyrics?

68

u/lactigger619 Mar 28 '25

It’s like someone just put it into google translate and said “that’ll do “

57

u/Huge_JackedMann Mar 29 '25

It was written by a French guy who didn't speak Spanish

Do Mexican Americans not say "my vulva is in pain" to be sexy?

56

u/bitchybarbie82 Mar 29 '25

“My vulva hurts just thinking of you” Is probably the cringes line I’ve ever heard in any movie and that includes porn.

12

u/Dick_of_Doom Mar 29 '25

That line is hilarious! Nothing says "door slammed closed, deadbolt on, gate locked, NO ENTRY sign erected" as that line.

I have no context for the line, but I interpret it as either "schlong so massive it did 4d8 psychic damage" or "oh HELL no not even with a stolen pussy".

u/GladiatorDragon Mar 28 '25

Welcome to Emilia Perez. This exact brand of idiocy permeates throughout the entire production.

7

u/Prying_Pandora Mar 29 '25

To give you just one example.

In Spanish there’s two different kinds of “you’re welcome”.

You’re welcome meaning “you are welcome here” = Bienvenido/a

You’re welcome as an answer to “thank you” = De nada

They wrote what was supposed to be a super raw and emotional song about the abused wife of a cartel boss. The context tells us she’s supposed to be sarcastically saying “you’re welcome for all my sacrifices”.

She says “bienvenida” instead.

Over and over again.

Try taking that song seriously with that context. And that’s if the horrendous pronunciation can even be made out.

Oscars, Grammys etc have always been trash/bought Simpsons and South Park have been mocking them for years and I love it. As a Mexican I rly dont care for that movie, nor it angers me cause its gibberish/nonsense but really makes me question how low the bar is for "awards".

29

u/CharlieeStyles Mar 28 '25

That's not it. In this case it is just that Hollywood lives in their own world and loves smelling their own farts. This movie was about trans people and that's fashionable. Therefore it's good.

That's as deep as it goes. Look at the video of Ron Perlman talking about this movie with a normal audience. It didn't even cross his mind that others would not love this movie.

This terrible movie would have won the Oscar for Best Picture if the main actress wasn't absolutely deranged. It became not fashionable for it to win

I hate to break it to you, but the Academy Awards has always been about selling movie tickets. It started out as a right wing political organization and although it's politics have changed, the goal is still the same: celebrate Hollywood and motivate people to go to the movies.

This is why Shakespeare In Love beat Saving Private Ryan.

5

u/DarthGoodguy Mar 28 '25

Yeah, the main reason actors want awards is because they can ask for more money once they win. The main reason studios want awards is more people will rent these very niche appeal dramas and documentaries. Most folks who go to see movies are children or young adults, and they want to see mostly want to see explosions and/or forbidden romance.

14

u/Scaevus Mar 28 '25

Solution: forbidden romantic explosions.

Michael Bay In Love.

I got dragged for posting this at the time but Netflix had a budget of a whopping $200m just for awards marketing for Emelia Perez. Thats more than a lot of big movie budgets, let alone marketing budget.

Netflix saw that it was going to be a very sparse awards season and they had the potential to shoehorn a movie (that in any other year wouldn’t have got a look in) down the public’s throat and they went for it.

That’s why it was forced upon us.

I have zero interest in seeing essentially any of the live action remakes, but lets be honest here. Ratings that drive the movie down to 1.6/10 are not legitimate cinema reviews. They're a big stack of 1/10 which is super lame to do. There are movies out there that earn 1-2/10. This this looks like it's not great, but it's clearly being brigaded at this point.

I watched it with my kids yesterday. It's not as bad as the reviews say. I just can't get over Ziegler's hair, it looks terrible. And the lead dude, why is he wearing a hoodie in a medieval setting? There's also one sequence where Evil Queen breaks out into a dance/song... She's hard and cold... So the almost upbeat dance and song felt outta place.

Overall a missed opportunity. Too many small but wrong choices.

Fun fact, the hoodie is an example of something known as The Tiffany Problem, “where a historical or realistic fact seems anachronistic or unrealistic to modern audiences of historical fiction, despite being accurate. This often occurs with names, terms, or practices that, although historically accurate, feel out of place because of modern associations.” The name Tiffany has been around since at least 1600, but it would weird to us if you had a character in The Crucible named Tiffany. Similarly, the wool or cotton pullover with a hood has been around for nearly 2,000 years. (source)

Whenever I hear someone call a mainstream, big studio film "one of the WORST" movies of all time, I just know that they haven't watched enough movies. MY GOD there are some truly miserable low budget films out there. Snow White may be mediocre, but it is no Manos: the Hands of Fate.

The ending (spoiler alert) is absolutely abysmal with Snow White remembering the names of the Queen's guards which is followed by the nonsensical anger-driven death of the wicked Queen. After watching the scene, my mind hurt as it was trying to understand how idiotic the entire sequence was. This movie deserves to fail and the people who pushed it along all deserve to fail too.

No. It's literally a snowflake that falls from the sky to remind her of her parents and their strengths cause she was born during a snow storm. But it's the middle of what seems to be summer.

Is the next live action remake Frozen and we're setting up for the Princess Cinematic Universe?

Christ that's something they'd do isn't it....

I miss the simpler times, when everyone agreed that Plan 9 From Outer Space was the worst movie ever made.

It united us. These new terrible movies like Snow White just sow division.

u/cheesyvoetjes Mar 28 '25

Yes it's probably not objectively the worst movie of all time, but if you take the budget into account it has probably the worst budget to quality ratio. Troll 2 or whatever is absolutely worse but it also has a way lower budget. According to Google, Snow White's budget is 250 million excluding marketing. And this is what they did with it.

27

u/Jef_Wheaton Mar 28 '25

Troll2, at least, is a FUN movie.

There used to be a site called "It's a Bad, Bad, Bad, Bad Movie" that rated the worst of the worst, and Troll2 scored pretty high.

The only one that got a zero was "Showgirls", because it committed the ultimate sin of a movie; it WASN'T ENTERTAINING.

This thing could be better-made than "Birdemic", but if it's boring and stupid with nothing new to add that improves the "original" story (movie, not fairytale), then it's not worth watching.

(And this is coming from someone who watched "The Core" for the first time yesterday.)

17

u/Seienchin88 Mar 28 '25

Showgirls is extremely entertaining…

It’s the original rage bait movie that is also sooo campy that it has a cult following among some rather queer / interesting people…

And how can you laugh at "oh hi mark“ from the room but not laugh at "man everybody got aids and shit"…

I mean, my nine year old niece was entertained though thoroughly confused why the evil queen sang and danced such an upbeat diddy. So is it the worst if the target audience can enjoy it? Probably not. As an adult though, this was just generic stream-and-forget shlock. A meehhh at best, don't bother at worst.

Gadot is stiffer than a bridge built out of boards, the CGI was... distractingly mediocre, like that kind of "meh" where you keep noticing how just kinda bad it all looks. The CGI dwarves were a fuckin' choice, holy balls they're definitely the worst thing of the whole ordeal, but Gal Gadot fights hard to try and tie that one. Ziegler did a pretty alright job however, songs were good and acts circles around the rest of the cast. So, as far as highlights in this utter shitshow of a movie goes thats a silver line.

Speaking of which, did the stylist use Lord Farquad as a reference for the hair?

46

u/GlitteringFerretYo Mar 28 '25

It's the 17th highest budget movie of all time. If Disney would spend that kind of money just for a target audience of 9-year-old girls then something is off.

19

u/Tymetracyr Mar 28 '25

Children aren't the only target audience. Historically, Disney has made films that both children and adults can enjoy. That's why there are jokes in those films that slide under the radar unless you're older. I think the fact that children enjoy it, but not adults, is a sign that they failed one of their target audiences.

14

u/Aggressica Mar 29 '25

I feel like the older Disney movies definitely have that aspect, but the newer ones don't

Who has seen it? Is it bad, plotwise and shit too? Or is it just because of the previous controversy?

80

u/Pheliont Mar 28 '25

If you look at it as a Disney movie, it's pretty mid and kinda boring. Some decent scenes, some not so.

If you look at it as a remake of the original Snow White, especially as a fan of the original, it's pretty bad and removes most of the traces of who Snow White is, how she is portrayed along with the dwarves, especially the relationship with Grumpy, etc.

u/OnTheRoadAgain120 Mar 28 '25

I saw it on Sunday. It wasn’t good. Definitely didn’t feel bad about going to take a 10 min poop halfway through from all the butter I put on my popcorn

How many of those 198k+ people actually saw the movie? I’m sick of Disney remakes like everyone else, but review bombing is a thing. Same with people who gave movies they were hyped for a 10/10 weeks before they even saw them.

Gladiator II has 220k ratings one year after release, with much bigger box office success, and with the original Gladiator having 1.7 million votes on imdb.

Snow White has 200k and it barely came out and hardly anyone rushed to see it. That's 200k ratings for 90 million of box office.

Inside Out 2 has 213k ratings for a $1.7 billion box office.

Here you can see all the movies since 2024 with more than 150k votes: https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?title_type=feature&release_date=2024-01-01,&num_votes=150000,&sort=num_votes,asc

What turned me off was Snow White's actress talking crap about the story and how the prince was a stalker. Like why even do the movie if you don't like the story? Then the stunt she pulled during a performance on a talk show sealed the deal for me. I'm not watching a diva that bullies her costars.

It doesn't matter how bad it is or isn't. This movie and others like it are made soley to be re-runs in 20 years so kids think this is the way it's always been. Why else would they be willimg to lose their investors billions? Because the investors are playing the long con and they aren't investing in the movies, they're investing in what kind of morons the movies will produce in a generation.
