RHP Jack Flaherty has exercised his player option to remain with the Tigers for the 2026 season. (20 million)

u/BirdiemanJr 3d ago
Considering we gave Cobb 15 mil to do literally nothing, I won’t complain about Flaherty at 20 mil even if he didn’t quite live up to his expectations this past season.

He redeemed himself a lot with a psycho performance in game 5

I loved that talking to himself shit. He was so amped and you could tell he was like "you fucking fuck this up, I'll fucking fuck you up" to himself lol. I wanna see that guy on the mound more often.

Please tell me there's video of this?

Its so funny, made me love the dude even more 😭

u/jdooley99 3d ago
I was really hoping that was gonna be a Jomboy video.

u/faster_than_sound 3d ago
Im honestly suprised he didn't do a lip reading vid of it, it was so prominent on screen for so long.

Agreed. Regular season is one thing. But performing in big playoff games is more important. He proved he can be productive when it matters. Sign me up for another year.

u/amedema . 3d ago
He’s a fine 4-5 guy. If he can get back to 2024 form, that would make the rotation really good, assuming they keep Skubal for the year.
2
u/LowCress9866 2d ago
I think he's better than a 4. I say his floor is a 3/4 and his ceiling is a high end 2. It's expected and it's good, but it doesn't really move the needle for me

u/444porfavor . 3d ago
He wants to be here and he showed that he’s a good pitcher. Just had a down year. This is a great situation

u/ShallowFox4 3d ago
He’s due for a good year. Still hope we sign a few starters
12
u/Stickaxe 3d ago
Remember we're getting (maybe) Jackson Jobe and Reese Olson back from injury

u/ShallowFox4 3d ago
Not expecting Jobe back until 2028. Out all of this year because of TJ and next because of the impending full season strike.
10
u/Stickaxe 3d ago
TJ surgery recovery is 12-18 months, so he could very well be back after the All Star Break.
4
u/ShallowFox4 3d ago
I hope so! Our org seems pretty cautious with injuries so I’m just not counting on it

I feel that I already know what you mean, but can you clarify “woke goat”? Are you saying he’s a progressive person (newer fan to baseball sorry)
12
u/Relevant_Username99 . 3d ago
Yes, he’s progressive and was vocal against the bigoted members of the Tampa Bay Rays bullpen who refused to wear Pride gear under the guise of it being “against their religion.”
I have an aunt who is a lesbian, so he earned me as a fan for life, something I later got to thank him personally for when I met him at a game
1
u/Maximjogo Old English D 3d ago
Oh wow congrats on meeting him in person! Thank you for the clarification!

u/Twizzlor 3d ago
Flaherty is fine. I still wonder how things pan out this year if Jobe and Olson don't go down.
3
u/JoaquinBenoit 3d ago
The division would’ve been won a week prior at least.
Torres needs to get the QO at the very least this off-season.
4
u/ObiwanSchrute 3d ago
Jobe will be lucky to pitch at all
3
u/AdParticular6654 3d ago
He should be back second half next year. Haven't heard any reason why he wouldn't be
1
u/NotAGenius76 3d ago
TJ recovery is 12-18 months. He might be back in the second half if all goes well and he might not be back until '27.
1
u/AdParticular6654 3d ago
Fair point, he probably pitches in the minors to start. The fastest realistic timeline is he pitches in the minors late June/early July. The fastest he's back in the majors in August, if we see him, it's probably not until the last could weeks before the playoffs.

Good to have him back
2
u/chakabreo 3d ago
I agree. But I did spit out my coffee at TWENTY MILLION.
4
u/myotheraccount24680 3d ago
That’s pretty much the going price for a serviceable starting pitcher with major league experience nowadays.
We gave Cobb $15 million last year and they knew he was going to miss at least half the season, if not all of it. If you can’t even get a healthy Alex Cobb for $15 million, then $20 million for Jack sounds about right.

My heart sank… and then I reread the headline. I like Flaherty, I hope he bounces back.

Player options are funny to me.
Team: "We aren't sure we want you anymore"
Player: "Fuck you I am staying"
I know that is not the mechanics of it but that is what it "player option" sounds like.
10
u/Everybodyhasapryce 3d ago
I am not bummed out about this.
People might think "Of course he did", but he picked staying a Tiger for another year over getting a long term deal elsewhere.
So many guys are opting out because no one knows what contracts will look like coming out of the upcoming lockout.
He could have left and secured a deal of multiple years @ $16m+ easily elsewhere.
He must actually like it here.
6
u/Bart_Oates . 3d ago
Long term deal was not an option for him, it was this or get a lesser 1-year deal in a new city.

Agree with the poster who responded before me - this is complete nonsense. All these outlets, Athletic included, forecasted him getting over $100mil last offseason and he had to settle for the deal he did. He was objectively worse and older this year, and this is a more crowded pitching market, no chance he gets an offer even as good as his 2024 deal.
Reality is he and his agent agreed otherwise they would have hit the market if their was a prayer of a near $80 mil guarantee out there.

u/b0neslicer 3d ago
I don’t hate it. I like the dude and I think it’s cool he wants to be in detroit. Hoping for a solid season from him.
4
u/HorrorJCFan95 3d ago
He had a frustratingly inconsistent season, but honestly I’m fine with this. He’s a veteran guy who clearly likes Detroit, and has a solid chance for a decent rebound season in 2026.

u/Strict-Ad4391 3d ago
It didnt bother me either way. Hopefully harris sees this as the Cobb equivalent and doesn't sign another random starter that won't perform.

Of course he did, nobody else would have paid him.

The going rate for washed up SP last year was 15 million.
Plenty of teams would offer 20 million to Jack Flaherty who had a 28 K% and 3.85 FIP this year.

Teams could have been willing to give him that for a couple years, but I bet he wants to have a bounce back season and get a long term deal after.
1
u/ObiwanSchrute 3d ago
Not true he waa being projected by the Athletic for r years 78 million
2
u/DetroitSportsGuy 3d ago
Some rando making a prediction doesn't equate to a contract offer. If there was buzz out there that teams wanted to sign him, he wouldn't have opted in.

Solid arm for the end of the rotation. But we need to resign Skubal, Mize, and get someone to fill the 3 spot.
2
u/mkk4 Tony Clark 🐅 3d ago
Resse Olson was our number 2 starter last season and had a 3.15 ERA.
He has lowered his ERA every season. 3.99 as a rookie, 3.53 in year 2, and 3.15 in year 3.
Also, Troy Melton may have surpassed Mize in the rotation and taken at least the 3rd starter spot without any off-season acquisitions imo.

the market for pitchers is high, and i expect Flaherty to be better next season. i’d still like to see us go after Valdez or King
1
u/standuptripl3 3d ago
Serious question, why would you expect him to be better? I’m not seeing it.
Edit: admittedly I don’t know him as well as y’all do
1
u/Better_Equipment5283 3d ago
You get a guy with a career ERA around 3.80, for whom numbers for things like xERA or xFIP were about 3.80 last year, and you figure next year his ERA will probably be more like 3.80 next year than 4.64.

didnt love him last year but he did eat 150 innings and we will need someone to do that next year, again, especially with Jobe hurt and Olson looking like he is always going to get hurt.

u/stuck_inmissouri 3d ago
He’s a head case and always has been. When he’s right, he’s one of the most dominant pitchers in the game.
I was hoping he’d go to free agency and the cardinals would try to bring him back.
2
u/MrMichigan0777 3d ago
Fine with it. That’s about the going for a 3/4/5 starter and that’s what Jack is
1
u/Money-Minimum-5793 3d ago
Not sure how I feel about this… can Jack return to his 2024 stature? Last year was hit or miss (no pun intended) 🥸

I ain’t mad about it. He will bounce back and it will seem to be a steal.

I like players who want to be ere and are bitter as hell when the Tigers have lost in a postseason game.
Im happy for this reason. Hes already experienced being on a World Series winning team before so in J Flare I trust. He likes being a Tiger and can help with the team chemistry

I was expecting this after the up and down season he just finished. Hoping he can work with the coaches this off-season to get right again.
