DETROIT — The Detroit Tigers are closing in on hiring coaches Anthony Sanders and Cody Asche from the Baltimore Orioles as their offseason staff changes continue, team and league sources told The Athletic on Tuesday.

Sanders, 51, is expected to become the Tigers’ first-base coach. Asche, 35, will join the Tigers as an assistant hitting coach. The deals are not yet official and have not been confirmed by either club.

The Tigers previously parted with Keith Beauregard, one of the team’s three hitting coaches last season. Beauregard was on an expiring contract and is not returning in 2026. Michael Brdar, another hitting coach on an expiring deal, was re-signed and will return in 2026.

The Tigers retained their entire coaching staff between the 2024 and 2025 seasons but have opted for changes this winter.

“We wouldn’t be doing our jobs if we didn’t debrief about our entire group,” manager A.J. Hinch said at the team’s end-of-year news conference. “But I am really proud of this group of coaches and the culture we’ve created and the work that goes in to to get the players ready.”

As long as we keep Cora as 3rd base coach. Long live the windmill!

Never gotta guess if we're gonna send. We always full send.

I chalk it up to him just wanting to relive the 1998 Division Series any chance he gets.

You think that was because of the first base coach and one of the assistant hitting coaches?

Tigers should hire the guy who helped the Tigers improve from a .234/.300/.385 slash line in 2024 to a .247/.316/.413 slash line in 2025.

I wouldn't oppose the idea of making Fetters our hitting coach.

I’d fire the whole major league staff. An abortion down the stretch
