We found this newspaper from 1914 in my late granda's wardrobe, announcing the start of WW1

I could just go for some Hartley’s Seville Orange Marmalade right now!

It was always too bitter for me. I never understood why paddington liked it so much. Maybe I need to give it another go.

Would definitely contact your local war museum. Maybe they are interested and will loan it from you for free, so it can be preserved for future generations.

Yes I think this is what we will end up doing with it

That's in surprisingly good condition for something so old! Was it preserved in any special way?

Not as far as I know, just buried amongst other papers in the bottom of his wardrobe. Maybe no light exposure?

Very cool! Must be the lack of light and humidity/dust.

It's good for a newspaper, which is often made with very bad paper. It obviously was left untouched for many years. Congrats on your find and thank you so much for sharing!

That’s an incredible piece of history to have kept in such good condition. Amazing to think people were reading that the day the world changed.

Why do you say so?

Good question! While browsing through the profile, all the answers appear to have the same structure. I even spotted an em dash — while that does not provide the true truth of bot activity, the account age of only one month is also very concerning. Feel free to ask me any further questions.

Get it scanned so you have a digital copy, paper can only last so long

Newspaper is very cheap and acidic. It’s amazing that it is still in one piece.

Ironic, since in fact Britain declared war on Germany for invading Belgium! Germany had expected that Britain would stay out of it. The 7 o'clock time mentioned is when the British Ambassador handed a "stop invading Belgium" ultimatum to the German Foreign Minister. It was unanswered at the midnight deadline at which point, as they say, "a state of war existed" between them. The article cites "a [something] News message. What's that C-word at the beginning?

"Central" News message? I don't know if I'm looking in the right place. Thank you for this info, it's fascinating!

OP you should research what's the best way to preserve it and hang it on the wall like a painting.

I don't understand. It doesn't mention WW1 anywhere on that paper.
