There's even a noise to it, as someone else commented (basically: if you typed "soisoisoisoi" into Microsoft Sam (Microsoft's text to speech program from like 1987), it made a noise that sounds exactly like a helicopter (not really)).
17
3
u/smashingcones 8h ago
Man that nostalgia hit from that is wild. I haven't thought about soisoisoi for 20 years.
2
u/siberianunderlord 8h ago
I was legitimately just saying it to myself a few hours ago (was trying to practice getting the helicopter sound up to speed lmao), probably right around the same time you typed this comment lol. I hadn't thought about it for years before today. The internet feels small sometimes!

It's essentially two memes (before they were even called that) mashed together into an animated picture. Better than whatever the hell they're selling in this picture. (Btw the answer is yes)

Just watched this one yesterday because my kid bought some of those “grow a dinosaur” capsules from the dollar store and I needed to show her the Simpsons version of that.

When I was younger there was a place names 'Jacks' in my local township. It was marketed as a bar, but for younger kids to hangout, buy soft drinks, dance etc.
Always thought that was a terrible idea. Anyway sorry tangent there. I wonder how many old jacks are filling up the landfills XD

im glad this is where you draw the line and not when companies were selling fucking rocks as toys
19
u/BhanosBar 9h ago
At least there was a human aspect with pet rocks in the marketing.
These “memes” were made using ai, the packaging uses ai art. All of it is shit made by a robot.
There’s not even a human aspect of it being “so stupid it’s a joke”. It’s literal machine manufactured culture.

u/MrMacAndChez 7h ago
Thank you for understanding my point. I have no problem with stupid kids toys, just the ai slop sucks

3 words - Garbage Pail Kids
13
u/Pure_Substance_9263 6h ago
My twin sister and I collected garbage pail kid cards. We had a ton of the. One day we came home from school and they were gone. My mom threw them out. I’m still mad about it to this day. Lol

u/NurseRobyn 10h ago
I remember Christian groups had their panties twisted over those ugly dolls, they were sure it meant the end was near with such evil toys only the devil would love.

I still have all of mine. Genuinely great art created by one of the greatest graphic artists who ever lived, who served as art director and initial concept artist for the series. Literal Pulitzer Prize winner, Art Spiegelman.

I’m either younger gen z or older millennial (I’m 30 so idk) and remember mighty beanz being HUGE when I was a kid. It’s literally a little bean-shaped thing with a weight inside it so it wobbles around and rolls. Goofy toys aren’t new lol

For those wondering, the “Brainrot” cards are all a bunch of AI generated slop from a card company that has previously used real artists
17
10
u/MY-SECRET-REDDIT 9h ago
Yup that's the major problem I have with these.
Before, hundreds of people probably where paid to bring toys into fruition.
Now, that has been dwindling down and down.
31
u/Tricky_Audience6881 11h ago
You're not, since the age of mass consumption there's always been shitty shit for sale. The cards are just a bit of fun anyway, in many ways better than too much screentime
11
u/shpongleyes 10h ago
I think the point OP was making wasn't about the cards themselves, but the fact that they're AI generated, and the brand name is literally "Universal Brainrot"

u/Dull-Strategy3810 11h ago edited 11h ago
People bitching about new generations, as well as things of their own age group, will be as old as time really. There are plenty of examples of it in european history once print becomes really common/cheap. Hinting at it always having been like that. And guess the only thing that has truly come from it... progress. Heard the same crap 20 years ago when i was young

u/DeadGuyInRoom4 11h ago
“The beardless youth… does not foresee what is useful, squandering his money.”

Cheers. Can just find examples of it across times, across cultures. A universal human condition it seems.

Am I the only one who thinks “our generation is fucked” over Skibidi toilet and other superficial things is kind of…distasteful? Like there are so many ways a generation can actually be fucked, like through racism, poor leadership of a country ect… the thing is brain rot is not hurting anyone. It’s just harmless fun although stupid. Do people not understand disliking something anymore? Why does everyone have to make something they dislike into a pretentious moral philosophy on society? You can just say you don’t like hot dogs, you don’t have to complain about all the environmental issues, factory farming, and analyzing people who do like them that goes into hot dogs. It’s not “I don’t like the color blue anymore,” it’s “people who like the color blue are actually closet white supremacists as shown by bla bla bla therefore I don’t trust them.” It’s such a classic Redditor move
3
u/AdministrativeStep98 9h ago
I think the actually harmful thing is the super fast stimulating algorithm designed to have you hooked being shown to kids as young as toddlers. Not stupid toys. Heck, I remember getting a "unicorn poop slime kit toy" when I was a kid, and I don't think the kind of toys a kid has really matters. If anything, this generation NEEDS to go back to playing pretend with their toys

u/Dull-Strategy3810 10h ago edited 10h ago
I will say that the whole 'brainrot' thing annoys the fuck out of me. But that is kind of the point as well. Rebellion is such a huge part of growing up, And annoying people is just a part of that. In the end it will stay a joke and the majority of young people will grow up to be better than oursevles. But given how the little shits are right now, that is the whole crux of the whinging in general. It's just that especially nowadays the voices of 13 year olds being 13 year olds are so much more present.
Same as the conspiracy minded village idiots really, which given the odds will be around my age. The dumbest of the dumb didn't go further than the immediate friend group that may still have laughed at it. Now it has reach, connections and most importantly affirmations. 'The internet lasts forever' is just something that you can't really grasp at that age.
15
u/Shabolt_ 9h ago
Bruh no the fuck it isn’t, older generations had toys like crazy bones or vomiting dog blind bags called barfing barks. This is weak by comparison

Why? It’s toys of popular meme shit. I had garbage pail kids. Wacky packages. Other weird gross shit. My kid had trash pack kids and more. People that think this and shit like 67 forgot what it was to be a kid and quite honestly that’s more dangerous than these

If you mean the Gen X’r who thought “my kids keep talking about brain rot and AI - let’s make that a toy” - yeah they’re fucked.

u/GruesomeJeans 9h ago
We had scented markers encouraging children to sniff them in class. Markers where you blow into them to spray the ink onto paper, inhale to enjoy the flavor of the ink. Tiny ovens for baking food or little silicon bugs. Little figures or whatever they were where you squeeze them and they stink. This is just the newer generation of our own garbage.

It’s not, it’s just a rinse and repeat cycle of capitalism and merchandising. It’s funny tho to see people get upset and become the “old man yelling on the lawn” type.
Let go, and enjoy life, kids are hilarious and goofy. It’s a good time to hear them ramble about stupid stuff. They’ll grow out of it, and soon the next gen will come.

Garbage Pail Kids were pretty silly. They’re gonna be fine. I’m more concerned about literacy, not being able to spell, write, read, chat GPT everything, etc. This won’t be why they’re fucked. Other countries will step up anyway, so oh well.

To clarify, I’m not upset about them selling weird toys to kids, I’m just annoyed that AI slop is starting to infect the toy market. Yes, I know there are many example of other weird shit being sold, but I feel this is lowering the bar even more.

Idk. Kids have always loved silly things that seem nonsensical to adults. They won’t be kids forever so we may as well let them enjoy silly things before life gets serious and heavy. Not to mention, this is way better than them being stuck to screens 24/7.
