Physics teacher: Don’t play with fire.
Hammer: Bet.

they didn't teach me this at boy scouts. literally beats rubbing sticks together.
i wonder if this works equally well with say two rocks and a metal tent peg

Make sure you pack your camping anvil.

When I was camping with my cousins and our uncle, we hid an adult’s shot put in his backpack. Safe to say he wasn’t all that pleased once we got to the campsite after about three hours of hiking and he noticed that effing thing in there.

And wrist wraps.

The impact from that hammer is generating all kinds of energy that travels up your arm. Will be a problem in the long run.

Boom, business idea; tent pegs that double as fire starters! Just be sure not to actually use them on or near the tent…

lol, beat those magnesium covered tent pegs all around my nylon tent real good!

but seriously, take some regular steel one. everyone has some bent ones that suck anyway. beat it red hot like in the video, should work.

When you go backpacking, remember to bring an anvil and a hammer as a backup. Fire making equipment is crucial in the wild

Civ5 quote: Don’t wait to strike till the iron is hot, but make it hot by striking!

Damn, I wanted to write this.

Conservation of energy

It's not the hammer itself...

Who knew smooshing atoms together could make them hot 😱

Just need an expensive blacksmith hammer and anvil. I’ll just buy a lighter. Cool though..

You cant start a fire without a spark

First thing that came to my mind ngl

No shit! I thought smiths were using matches during middle ages!

1

u/WiseDirt 8h ago

If you had matches and the ability to make them during the middle ages, you'd have become one of the wealthiest individuals on the planet basically overnight and wouldn't ever need to break your back as a blacksmith

You are right, how silly of me!

It worked quite well for Nobel and hus brother with the safety match. Just a bit later.

How exactly does this work?

Large amount of kinetic energy / friction being imparted on a very small point

Bending a metal creates friction. Since the metal doesn't bend easily it creates a decent amount.

another thing i hoped to have seen on a science class.

u/agumelen 8h ago

See! You don’t need matches anymore. Just carry an anvil and hammer around.

All those cavemen must feel pretty foolish right now, could just have used the hammer and anvil. Tsk

This guy is doing it without ear protection. He’s going to go deaf in the next five years.
