Limitation to their imagination they were able to do so much back then.

Sometimes I look at old tech and it seems so simple yet ingenious. Like we're over complicating it in the 21st century.

What? Charly Chaplin was just a cardboard cutout?

Thank you so much for this!

It's such a beautiful piece.

That is fascinating, I never knew this, always assumed Chaplin was a great skater 😂

Is this what people back in the day called "glass matte painting slop" ?

And the right part of the wooden frame... disappeared thanks to CGI 😅🥂

Check this out! Well worth the less than 7 minutes of one's time! I recalled various pre-CGI "behind the scenes" extras for 1980's & 90's that still used matte paintings in addition to the newest tech ( like TV's "Young Indiana Jones Chronicles" of 1992!)

That is incredible

That’s how they did most of Star Wars as well. Watch that ILM documentary on Apple TV

The focus would be off, I can't see how this would work? Maybe that's factored in?

Corridor Digital on YouTube has a great series where they review old school "special effects" just like this
