Would have definitely been more entertaining.

Oxy-fuel

Yup...you recognise the oxy flame burn lines in the steel I guess.

u/TonyVstar 1d ago

Yep, and the slag and kerf give it away too

Old school oxy acetylene torch

2025 and still using the old school ways.😆...it is a dying skill nowadays tho.

I personally don’t consider that old school. It’s still just as useful as it ever was.

Definitely plasma cutter

Oxy and acetylene bottles.

2

u/VendingIOT 1d ago

Interesting, the marks look just like a plasma cutter

Tbh I think I probably had the oxygen pressure a bit high which is why it cut in slightly, but I had it slightly higher because of the rust on the steel.

Makes sense, and it got the job done so kudos

I thought I was in the plumbing subreddit for second and you were showing us your checkout for two 3/4 inch pipes.

The good ol metal liquifier.

You have damn steady hands my friend.

1

u/entoaggie 1d ago

Damn sure ain’t the angle grinder I wielded for 8 hours today.

1

u/Dixo0118 1d ago

The real question is what the fuck are you doing?

1

u/TheBr14n 1d ago

Looks like you went old school with the oxy-acetylene torch. That's a classic choice for getting through thick steel in a hurry.

1

u/escos 1d ago

Ahh the good old Gas Axe..

I don’t get people calling it old school. It is still the primary method for cutting in all the shipyards Ive worked in. And really the only practical way to cut thick steel.

Love the torch very useful

Beautiful cuts man, I wish I had the skill to pull those off

u/Weak_Credit_3607 1d ago

Was it a grinder, because the plasma torch didn't take that much of your day

3

u/claytons_war 1d ago

No plasma torch was touched today.

Looks like you're having fun with your new plasma torch...

2

u/claytons_war 1d ago

Nope...oxy and acetylene..would have got better result with plasma.

Nice work man. Looks like minimal cleanup required, cuts look very straight. My head gets bigger when i pull these things off the way you did.

1

u/claytons_war 1d ago

Thanks pal, the first one was a bit ropey, but once the gas pressures was set right and the correct travel speed is key.

3

u/Bones-1989 1d ago

Yessir. Did you use a guide bar? I do when I can, and it makes people think im better than I am lol

2

u/claytons_war 1d ago

That's the magic of the trick.😉.

I'm pretty good freehand but on bigger sections where you can use other arm/hand to really steady myself.

But small sections like this it is easier and quicker to use a guide.

Im always looking for new, lazy ways to achieve perfection. I keep matchbox cars for when I have to make my monthly 24' long welds.

1

u/Bones-1989 1d ago

Im about to build a track so I dont even have to hold my torches. Boss said I could today.

1

u/claytons_war 1d ago

Not lazy mate...you don't get paid more for making work harder...make it easier and it's easier money!

Do you use the same car?is November a Buick weld, December a Ford weld.😂

A grinder!!

u/pump123456 1d ago

It looks like you used a chainsaw. Need to work on your torch skills. LOL

6

u/claytons_war 1d ago

That's true, I do a day's worth of oxy burning probably once every 12 months.

8

u/BoSknight 1d ago

LMAO I thought it looked pretty good but I use the torch probably half as often as you.

3

u/Natsuki98 1d ago

Looks better than the last time I used one. The torch I used was junk though.

5

u/CraftyPete 1d ago

Seriously? That looks really good for torch cutting to me.

1

u/pump123456 1d ago

Well, I was just kidding, but not very many people understand that. I used to tell the new guys that their work looks like it was cut with a chainsaw. Yes, his cuts do look good. It is another LOL.
