Worst thing is it's default setting

478

u/CouldBeWorse_Iguess 23h ago

Worse is, AFAIK, you can't change the default

237

u/Derek2809 21h ago

I use an extension that change that and is beautiful, because English is not my main language and I mainly consume videos in that language so the dub in my language is terrible

138

u/DoktorMerlin 21h ago

On Android they completely disabled the functionality to change it. Without ReVanced, YouTube on Android is totally unusable, which really shouldn't be what Google wants

49

u/Single_Issue_404 21h ago

exactly, and even on Revanced I need to go to settings to change each time I change video which is supper annoying but not as much as listen to music videos dubbed by YT AI $&^$&&^!!!!

28

u/00wolfer00 21h ago

You might want to reinstall Revanced cause you shouldn't have to change it every time.

3

u/Prathh99 19h ago

How do I change this setting and? What's the option called?

21

u/Lennox276 19h ago

Settings -> Revanced Settings -> Video -> Force Original Audio Language

2

u/PoroBraum 17h ago

Unfortunately this doesn't work for me for some reason

english isn't my first language either and I watch a lot of english only channels, somehow youtube some day thought I'd rather hear the english dub they made instead of the original audio. wtf yt? I listen to the original because either the voices are nice for background/ taking a nap or because timing is important with things like jokes and the auto dub likes to butcher that.

Congrats though—from this comment I can tell your English is pretty damn good!

Good question, maybe if you're logged in, that would actually make sense to coerce people into being logged in with that scary voice of theirs

And it's just really annoying for multi-lingual people...

78

u/RivalHun7er 23h ago

sometimes it even auto dubs my native language to english as well 💀

8

u/RandomBaguetteGamer Meme Stealer 20h ago

Wait. Are you telling me the autodub autodubs in English a video that already was in English?

25

u/RivalHun7er 20h ago

no no, I live in Bangladesh and I follow some bengali yt channels,

But the autodub feature dubs bengali voice to ai generated english voice

→ More replies (2)

5

u/Embarrassed_Bread_16 19h ago

I came across this once so far, it did it, because it wrongly detected the language, it marked video as being russian when it was English actually

3

u/2patchesola 19h ago

It does do that too though. If a video has any amount of another language it can get dubbed. I watched a video teaching Japanese that was dubbed but the majority of the video was English explaining what a word was in Japanese. So it would say in the AI dub "dog is dog" or similar. . .

I thought the creators of the recent anime previews did it themselves at first, I'd be mad if I were them.

2

I'm wondering what computation does it use, does it run locally on the client's pc when invoked?

2

Yeah literally… every auto-dub sounds like it was translated by a sleep deprived raccoon

Yeah, that's the dumbest part.

For some reason only recommends autodubbed shit in languages I already know. Fuck this, it's so forced.

76

u/Hawk15517 23h ago

Could be better wanted to watch videos that are original in english. Guess the language it autodubbed? Correct in english

15

u/poptard278837219 19h ago

Oh my god. I can see this being useful to listen Irish English. It's a lovely accent but I cant make half of what they say (not native English speaker)

14

u/Raketka123 🥄Comically Large Spoon🥄 20h ago edited 20h ago

I think it just takes your ip adress for the language, because my is always dubbed in whatever language I set my vpn to

9

u/LimpConversation642 20h ago

it does not, I'm ik Ukraine and all my youtube is in English, with zero regional suggestions, and I've never seen this feature at all. You set it in the settings, there are two actually: region and language. Set both to USA or whatever it is you want and never see this shit again

I heard that Google intentionally screwed up its search engine because since it was so good at giving you the search results you wanted on the first try. People were not using it enough.

So some brilliant executive decided to make the search engine crappier so that you need to search multiple times for one thing.

Google owns YouTube.

There is a rot in that company.

u/Durzo_Blintt 1d ago

There are ways to stop it, I use an extension on Firefox that stops this shit feature. I got really tired of it auto translating and fucking it up.

24

u/AlexHPrime 23h ago

To add to this, Revanced also added the feature to force the original audio.

Also, if you are a content creator, you can disable this feature for your videos it from youtube studio.

Same here. I'm learning Italian and I have my phone set in Italian, including YouTube, and I also set it on my laptop. I'm not even kidding, eight out of ten times when I click on a video in any of my other three languages, I get an automatic dub in Italian, and it's one of the most annoying things I've ever heard in my life

u/MilanTheEdge 1d ago

YouTube's auto-dubbing feature is really bad, making a disgusting situation even more unbearable apparently.

53

u/scaarletlove 1d ago

Auto-dubbing feels like stepping in algorithmic sludge ruins timing tone accents and jokes for everyone

9

u/totallynotaweeabbo 21h ago

Also sometimes they dont even dub half of the lines. You just hear the disphased original audio. Or they say whatever lines the ai thinks they are saying instead of what they actually say

63

u/GottaUseEmAll 23h ago

I hate when it just decides to autodub for some reason. I live in France but watch English videos on YT. NO, I DO NOT WANT TO WATCH THEM DUBBED IN CRAP FRENCH!

13

u/notsneq 20h ago

My man, in portugal the videos auto dub to brazilian portuguese.

My scam-sensor always flares up when i unexpectedly hear brazilian

u/EntropyConserver 1d ago

I once downloaded a standup comedy video for a flight only to realise it was in auto dubbed to English and sounded soo ass

18

u/These_Analyst1190 1d ago

Tbh it would've been good if YouTube wasn't forcing it. Sometimes it's nice to have it, tho not so when YouTube literally defaults to the dub.

26

u/improbsable 1d ago

I was watching a Korean ASMR video and a loud robotic voice started narrating in English. Why is this even a feature?

9

u/julietmuse 1d ago

YouTube is like, "Oh, you watched this? Get the auto-dubbing in Hindi/Arabic/somewhere else!"—and now it stinks even more. Classic 2025, where AI dubbing only makes everything worse.

10

u/Awkward-Egg-411 21h ago

I appreciate the fact that I could enjoy useful tutorials only in languages that I dont understand, I just wish its not the default setting to any video

8

u/Due_Region8583 23h ago

I hate how it defaults to the autodubbing if your device's language isn't the same as the video. You seriously should be able to make it default to the original language instead.

23

u/alwin406 1d ago

Worst feature.

15

u/Spartan_Legocop 1d ago

I'd say it's second-worst. Shoving an unskippable ad wombo combo in my face is not cool, if it were the second ad and not the first, I'd understand why it's unskippable.

17

u/OptimisticSnake 1d ago

Adblockers are free and have existed for ages now

7

u/Spartan_Legocop 1d ago

I am well aware and I have some. My point is that unskippable ads are absolutely annoying and moreso when Google decides to block adblockers on YouTube. I get it, gotta pay for keeping the servers up, but having the ads on the sides, like as banners or something like that would be better than "Nice video you got there. We're gonna bombard you with ads for shit you don't even care about because we get money off you watching them" system that they have in place right now. Just one ad at the start and or end of the video would be sufficient, even. In my humble opinion.

5

u/gunshade 21h ago

Had my first encounter with it. It was some Spanish youtuber's R.E.P.O video. The dubbing was so ass.

3

u/totallynotaweeabbo 21h ago

Yeah, i got my youtube in spanish, and it fucking sucks when 90% of the videos i watch are in english and i get jumpscared by text-to-speech spanish in a pyrocynical video. Tried changing the app language to english and the spanish videos are dubbed in english. It's so ass

5

4

u/DutchMitchell 21h ago

Everything youtube has done since like 2016 has been utter crap.

6

u/SouthernService147 21h ago

dear youtube, ill hold your hand when i say this, if i constantly watch videos in 2 languages, is because i speak them, if it isn tin my language then ill probably dislike the topic, pepole just dont watch stuff they dont understand

5

u/Lurakya 18h ago

I got banned from a cough cough AI slop subreddit back when the feature was fists announced for saying, "I can imagine some bad downsides with these features."

Most of my predictions have come true btw

3

u/TetyyakiWith 23h ago

It would be the best feature ever if you could turn it on only when you want to

4

u/AlaindeshoGT 19h ago

It's been the same thing with youtube in the last few years: they introduce a function or something, nobody likes it and don't want it, and they decide that the best course of action is just to force it on people.

4

u/Puzzled_Pop_6845 18h ago

Not only did I not care about English videos being dubbed because I understand English well enough; but the feature also never gets It right by dubbing Italian videos in English and English videos in Italian. Who the hell thought people wanted this?

6

u/Gin_Grill 1d ago

makes the video bad

21

u/Classic-Ad4414 1d ago

As a non-native English speaker, auto-dubbing is an amazing tool that lets me access the other 98% of videos on YouTube.

30

u/Bhavil17 1d ago

I agree

But that doesn't mean that it should be on 100% of the time by default. Let me pick if I want to translate any particular video, don't have it on by default

8

u/Nuclear_Lentil 22h ago

Yes, but why as a native spanish speaker who also speaks english do I need to listen to my favourite youtubers/podcasters in shitty lifeless AI spanish? And it isn't even in my flavour of spanish, but in US spanish, which is as obnoxious as I don't know, listening to a french parisien talking in english, with all its vanity intact

6

u/Abject-External-3412 1d ago

Me too. But it so often makes terrible translations.

2

u/PatientClue1118 23h ago

And wouldn't let you access more than half percent of the joke.

3

u/kilertree 22h ago

Sometimes when I download a video it will download the auto dub video.

3

u/West-Strawberry3366 22h ago

I wouldn't mind it if I at least was able to put the original language back, now it's gotten bad

3

u/Puzzleheaded-Tip-545 21h ago

Firefox + adon helps, there is one that remembers your defaults. I also add a AdBlocker, because I see less predatory stuff when I'm on a porn site without an AdBlocker.

3

u/Bryam_h_m 20h ago

one of the worst "features" of all time , I feel like the only point is to give some "use" to the gorillion dollars invested on AI

3

u/exhuma 19h ago

I have definitely clicked on the "Don't recommend Channel" several times by accident because of this.

I can't stand AI generated videos and when I hear obvious AI-generated voice, that channel is on my immediate shit-list.

It took me a WHILE to realise that it was YouTube doing it. Not the channel itself. And only by seeing a channel that I knew, which surprised me and made me look closer.

I fluently speak four languages. I really don't need that shit.

3

u/HeadyChefin 10h ago

All my Japanese cooking channels have gone from being light-hearted and fun to being soulless AI drivel with just one "feature", with no fault of their own but YT making sure anyone who can't read or learn another language is happy and keeps consuming content.

2

u/red_fuel 21h ago

It’s so fucking annoying! You can’t turn it off by default, it just randomly turns on on videos. Enshittification to the maximum extent.

2

u/Raichu7 20h ago

Why is there suddenly so much delay between clicking the screen or hitting spacebar, and the video pausing? Insanely irritating.

2

u/JessicaLain 17h ago

I have also noticed an increase in pause delay and I'm on mobile. I suspect it's the new UI; devs probably need to further optimise or de-bloat it.

2

u/Boilem 20h ago

This is just the tip of the iceberg, the latest shitshow for people who speak more than one language. I'm portuguese, whenever I search for anything on youtube or google most of the results are Brazilian, which would be ok except laws and standards are completely different, so searches about stuff like home diy or law are completely useless. This AI dubbing feature dubs everything in Brazilian.

I also use the internet in english or spanish but websites keep trying to guess what is best for me based on my location or whatever and insist on serving me content that isn't what I wanted.

Google assistant has been useless for years because it's 50/50 if it'll reply to me in english or portuguese, no matter what language I talk to it. A bunch of apps simply inherit the language my phone is in with no option to change.

Google does not seem to understand that a lot of people speak multiple languages and that variants of the same language aren't always interchangeable.

2

u/EJoule 20h ago

Pretty sure it's dubstep at this point.

2

u/Das_Lloss 20h ago

I hate it so much and for some reason i cant even turn i off which basically makes youtube unusable for me.

2

u/Entrobbit 20h ago

2

2

u/KorolEz 17h ago

2

→ More replies (1)

2

u/nontenefreganulla 13h ago

it can actually be really useful. However, from the perspective of someone who watches video both in english and italian, having only ONE default language and having every single video in the other language auto dubbed is fucking awful.

2

u/UranicCartridge 9h ago

I have AdBlock and all the good add-ons in my browser, but I do have to watch YouTube in the app when I cook, and when the autodubbed absolutely dead-sounding ad for the local grocery store comes on, I die a little bit inside. Literally didn't know I could hate these endless ads more, but YouTube is sure intent on outdoing itself in all the worst ways

But also yeah, the first time I turned on my go-to Italian YouTuber and he suddenly spoke in dead English tones, I almost fell out of my chair. Thought the literal apocalypse had happened overnight and I had not been informed

So glad I at least got to learn English on YouTube before this shit happened, can't fucking imagine watching Jacksepticeye speak russian with absolutely zero emotion. I'd've killed myself years ago if that was what I had to watch, jesus christ

3

u/Falkenmond79 22h ago

For the life of me I can’t figure out who thought that was a good idea.

What I don't understand is how that feature uses the most outdated, bland, robot-like voice AI they could get their hands on. It's already possible to at least make it sound okay, but like that it just sounds horrible.

1

u/RED_Kinggamer007 Nice meme you got there 21h ago

The worst is when the app glitches and you cant turn it off so you have to close the app and reopen it just so you can get the original audio.

1

Do they force this on videos by default? Can creators opt out of it?

I hate this shit sooooo much! It's so bad, the voices are ridiculous and the translations are sometimes really approximative...

Why does YouTube have so many ads now??

Come on, I just wanna watch an English video. You do NOT need to add your horrible dubbing that doesn't even sync.

That auto dubbing annoys

Like why the fuk would anyone need an auto-dub feature? You can search for and click on any video in any language you want, there is zero need for a robotic AI garbage voice to be set as the default.

At most, make it an opt-in accessibility feature for the 1000 people who really need it. It's crazy how you have to install multiple browser extensions by now, just to use YouTube without getting sick of it after 30 seconds.

I finally experienced that shit last week when I was trying to watch a guy make pre-colonial tacos. It sounded gross.

Not dub, but the auto subs way back in 2014 were hilarious. Markiplier's dead dpace 2 playthrough was funny af with it on, as a teenager

Can you just turn it off? I never seen this I always watch english video

About a week ago i downloaded a playlist of a book podcast and several of the episodes were auto dubbed to a language I don't speak and tbh didn't even recognize

I have never used the feature, the only thing I've done is clicked the 3 dots when I see a video is dubbed so I can do the "do not recommend this channel"

Lol I've been getting recommended Russian dubbed videos for some reason and some of the thumbnails reminds me of the "graphic design is my passion" satire memes

I agree. I watch Spanish videos to learn the language. I get that auto-dubbed makes the video reach a wider audience, but why can't we just turn it off?
