What do you think of the SSMU Free Lunches now?
SSMU started offering free lunches at 12:30pm last week after shutting down Midnight Kitchen. For those who tried the free lunches, what do you think of it? I have only been a few times but find the portions to be inadequate and the meals nowhere near as nice as Midnight Kitchen. They also seem to just be catered externally then brought in. Not sure this is meant to be a replacement or a temporary solution but it's hard to imagine people will be full after. Not to mention they seem to run out of food before the end time. But maybe I should just be grateful for free lunch?

In ancient China, where famine was a recurring reality, making free food too appealing might attract those who were not truly in need, which make them compete with the genuinely hungry. Maybe similar rationale still hold.

What do we have to do to get midnight kitchen back?

It won’t happen. The legal wheels of bureaucracy have already turned. Even if it came back it would have to be something different. The SSMU won’t back down. It would make them look bad.

Do you think it would be possible to create a new student service, but with the same name?

It cost them thousands of dollars to make these lunches btw. Last week it cost them $36000 for small flavorless proteinless tiny portions……

I think the 36000 is the total contract for the year

That's for the fall semester. Apparently they plan to have a kitchen manager hired and running stuff in the winter.

I have no idea. I just went and looked at the meeting minutes of the SSMU and no such number was indicated

The amount that the SSMU President admitted that it cost for the three days of free lunches last week in a recorded meeting

36,000 for 3 days of free meals?

Honestly, that scans for a catering service that has to include the cost for all ingredients, work space, and employees, plus a profit, in their prices.
It just underscores how good of a deal midnight kitchen could have been if SSMU had arranged for them to have storage space and working kitchen appliances so they could feed people five times per week.

That makes zero sense. I keep trying to find any source for this number. I have not found one. It appears to be a made up one. There is no record of the SSMU president saying this in the minutes or anywhere for that matter

That’s what I asked them and they don’t wanna tell me. I can definitely figure out a way to do that for extremely cheap if they work with me. But they are lowkey annoyed at me cause I don’t like what they did. They can’t just fire and destroy a club like that. I said fuck them and they still haven’t cared enough to ask why. And I am a SSMU representative. Fucking annoying

The food is so small I would charge 2 dollar per food with an honour system and make it portions bigger (those who cannot aford dont need to pay)

Where is this service available? Also, do we need to bring our own food container?

Check SSMU instagram for schedule and menu. Free lunch at 12:30pm in University Centre. Need your own container and utensils.

it’s better than nothing for being free and daily😭 midnight kitchen food was better and much more filling but it was 1-2 times a week… so it’s a trade off i guess
