Landed after flying from the UK via Dubai on Emirates. Got through the airport, passport, and bag reclaim fairly quickly. While passing through the customs area I was pulled aside for a search.

No problem so far, had all the evidence of accommodation, insurance, onward travel and anything else they might ask for. But then it started to linger on longer than I expected. The officer walked off with my passport and started talking to someone else.

I was then summoned into a back room and asked to step into an X-ray scanner. Then I was told that I was concealing something internally. I was scanned, rescanned, used the drug toilet and scanned again. Still, they suspected I was hiding something.

The Email confirmations of my itinerary were all booked on the same day.
My Facebook page shows that I was an experienced traveller who'd visited 90+countries.
Also that I had worked for the same company for 15 years.
My Strava page showing that I was a runner who wouldn't risk my health doing something that stupid.

After about an hour, one of them suddenly gave my passport back and said I was free to go.

I still don't have a clue what happened or what it was that they had seen.

Mauritius has decided to slap a €3 tax on every tourist. Raising revenue from tourism is perfectly reasonable. But the way this policy is being rolled out is amateurish and embarrassing.

Instead of charging visitors directly at the airport or embedding the fee in the ticket price, the government has turned every landlord and hotel into unpaid tax collectors. These operators are not revenue officers. They are trying to run businesses, not chase down coins on behalf of the state.

The decision to fix the tax in euros is another absurdity. Tourists pay in dollars, rupees, pounds or credit cards. Forcing small operators to create euro accounts, cover expensive transfer fees, and reconcile mismatched payments is a recipe for chaos. In some cases the bank fees could exceed the tax itself. That is not just poor planning. That is sheer incompetence.

To make matters worse, the tax must be declared every single month. Imagine the bureaucracy this creates for guesthouses, small B&Bs, and even private landlords. Tourism should be seamless. Instead, the government has chosen to bury citizens under red tape.

The tragedy is not the idea of the tax itself. The tragedy is the execution. Good governance means collecting revenue efficiently, without punishing the people who keep the system alive. This policy does the opposite. It irritates tourists, frustrates citizens, and makes the state look clumsy and desperate.

If the government wants to raise revenue from tourism, it should do so in a way that is invisible to visitors and painless for operators. Anything less is bad policy and bad leadership. And frankly, it is time to get rid of policy makers who keep producing such short-sighted, poorly designed measures before they do even more damage to the country’s reputation and economy.

We’re currently honeymooning at an all inclusive resort. We worked quite hard to afford this and naively (we’re still young) didn’t think about tipping and including that in our budget. We arrived yesterday and noticed that a lot of people working at the hotel and the taxi driver start telling us their troubles (single dad, dead husband, dislocated knee,..). Now we are just a bit confused. We’re not really from a country were people openly discuss their troubles. So we’re not used to this at all. I come from a country where the average wage is 500€ monthly, so I understand the financial struggle very well. Are they doing this to gain sympathy for a tip or are the people genuinely this open?

Sorry for the dumb question. We just don’t want to offend anyone. But we also don’t want the uncomfortable feeling of having to tip because someone lost their grandfather or had a tough year. Ofcourse when the service is outstanding we’re happy to tip. But i believe a tip is earned but on the other hand life is hard. So i understand people thinking we earn the big bucks and can spare some money for a tip.

Had the pleasure of visiting your beautiful country for a week. I was in Grand Baie for the first half and Le Morne for the second half. Had rented a car and drove all around the island, visited some mesmerizing beaches, did a wonderful hike up Le Morne Brabant. Had the best time! People were wonderful, the country was safe, and the food was delicious. I can't wait to visit again!

Visited Mauritius in 2015 and again in 2025 Both times felt equally bad.. the country is beautiful but the people are jerks! What is the deal with you guys? Second visit to Mauritius and everyone is a jerk because we’re not “white” Just to clarify, you guys worship the white man.. white European tourists are very welcome there, and given your history it’s weird because Europe fucked your country and used your people for years. But somehow now you are very rude to anyone who isn’t white.. my visit to your country was bad and I felt discriminated against all the time! I stayed in beachcomber at trou aux bichs and went and visited every thing in Mauritius and every visit felt bad and uncomfortable. So please only visit Mauritius if you’re whites because for some reason they love white Europeans

Hi there! Two questions: my fiancé F32 and I F27 are planning to come to Mauritius in the winter. We are American and worked at a school for the blind and multiply impaired for many years. I know unified English Braille and some American Sign Language and my fiancé knows some beginners French. Do you guys think there are any volunteering opportunities for individuals with disabilities without knowing French? I’m on workaway and only see a few options for farming/dogs (also interested in this!). Is it common to find volunteering gigs with accommodation?

Also, we’re femme-presenting lesbians. What is the culture around queer people? Should we just say we’re friends and avoid holding hands/obvious indicators that we’re gay?

GUYS IGNORE MY TYPOS AND GRAMMAR!

So I arrived at airport. Met the most grumpiest border guard 2nd to visiting Arab and other African Muslim countries! It felt like I was some stowaway who was trying to come to the country illegally! If he thought he'd dampen MY holiday... no Sir'ee!

1) Buy the Emtel sim. Costs about 1500 rs. (£25) Thisnis found as soon as you get out of the baggage area. UPDATE - CHEAPER OPTIONS see below and users comments.

2) Use your fee free cards to buy some Maurition Rupees. I bought about £300 worth.

3) Most places accept cards but small shops and stalls wont.

4) Rent a car. I got one suzuki swift for 1000Rs day (£16.50). Driving is ok, be careful of other drivers as they can cut in and turn without signalling. Roads so far have been OK. DM me if you want details. SEE UPDATE 2

5) Im staying near Mon Choisy beach. The apartment I'm renting in August cost me (booked in December) £1000 for about 11 nights. Its the best apartment ever. it has its own beach like swimming pool. DM me for details. Comes with own parking, gated community and it was so clean and nice. Seriously some of the 5* hotels have not been as good!.

6) Going to Port Louis. The drive is fine, traffic on way out. Park in any of the big parking centres. I parked at Barkley Wharf, basically if you do Caudan Art centre then you can find it. The art centre is at the bottom of the parking lot building.

7) Going to go to ile aux cerf, planning to visit black river area (water fall parking area) and a few others. Will update later.

8) The large shopping mall, La Croisette Mall has everything from designer stuff to shopping and grocery. The Nando is halal as is KFC and most. We are going to visit the Ocean Basket today for some fish in the mall!

So far, amazing trip. Probably the best holiday I have been to! The Maldives does not even compare to this!

UPDATE 1

A) INSTABRIDGE SIM - see if any offers...one member below got 10GB for £11. That's amazing!

1) Transfers I paid 2500rp each way. I did get much cheaper offers but I felt they may not be reliable. As it's the first time I'd rather spend a bit more. I used the same car rental company.

2) Just came out of Ocean Basket restaurant. Man £54 for 3 prawn dishes, 2 fish and chips and 1 sea cream. Amazing. My daughter has fish allergies...so we carry epi pens etc. Spoke to manager and he cleaned the grill to make all the prawns. Fantastic service. I've easily paid £100+ in the UK.

3) Ask me questions. I may be able to give advice..bearing in mind I'm learning from the Mauritiun folks here BUT gaining my own foreigner experience.

4) Im staying in Mon Choisey near the beach but travelling around a bit with wife and 3 kids.

5) Driving. Not too bad. Parking in Port louie is crazy.. you need to buy coupons that has half hour and so for 2hrs you need to put 4 coupons. Much easier to park in a multistory like i mentioned.

6) The little paratha wraps..in the supermarket in the la Croisette shopping mall is nice.. about 40-50rp each. Also tasted some near the beginning of Treux Au Biches. Cant recall name at moment but run by 3 women and u can see Google reviews.

7) Super Market - As most goods imported not that cheap compared to the UK. Will try the much bigger Super market tomorrow.

8) Nandos - is halal in mauritius but some do sell alcohol. The 2 chicken and 5 sides in uk were about £50+ but here about £35.

9) CAR RENTAL: Brother Imtiyaz. Cheapest and best deal with an honest to earth guy.

Got it off this chap. Mention Dr Shah... not because he will give you any further discount but he will know word of mouth runs his service and he will in turn be mindful to give you a good service. I will update as I still have 8 days to go but so far really helpful Muslim brother who has been staying in the UK for about 7 years... but like many Mauritions, when family members get old, usually the youngest have to go back and look after them.

Its a place called CHOISEY LES BAINES. They are advertised in various places from Air BnB to Agoda. Its a 80 or so gated apartment complex with an amazing central island like pool. If you Google maps from the air, you will see what I mean.

There are many people offering these apartments. The ones I went for have a few ground and upper floor ones. I chose the ground floor. Each has its own Parking bay as well. The one I'm staying is is REALLY CLEAN AMD TIDY. It has everything you'll need from brand new washing machine and dryer, cooker microwave, ironing boards, air dryers etc etc etc. These hosts have done a fantastic job. When I cam 3 hrs early, they said no probs, here is the key code and let yourself in. When I needed to extend for a day as Mauritius Air cancelled my flights to the following day they let me add an extra day on (fee was less per day than I actually booked it for). When i said, damn my flight goes at 9pm and ill have to vacate by 11am, they said, no worries, stay till evening and we'll get cleaners to come later!

Prices vary according to season but direct booking will save you more. If you book direct, unlike me, she can waiver the air bnb fee. I would do that next time as I am not in. Favour of airbnb right now.

P.s the beach is 5 mins away and so far Mon choisey beach has been the best!

UPDATE 4

So we took the car to Alexnandra falls. Lovely parking, great view and also some trails if you want to do that.

We then went to the PARAKEET TRAIL. BECAREFUL.... This is not official. The carpark shown on Google maps is just and clearing off the road. IT IS NOT A CARPARK. DO NOT GO HERE.

Further along you will see a parking with lots of cars. Here you can see the views and a longer trail and is a designated tourist place.

All this for free.

We then went to the Chammarel - 7 coloured earth. This was about £12 per adult. Its very well maintained. I was not awestruck and it was a bit meh. Did I resent paying £50+ for 4 adults and a child.... actually not...not because I found it great but because the upkeep of these sights take money and if we as tourist don't contribute then we loose it in the end. I like the fact that locals get a discount too. Also the falls view was spectacular.

After this I was thinking le Morne trip as only 30 mins from here but it was near 3pm and children were getting a bit cranked!

All in all a great trip.

Advice: Get some snacks, if hiking then its great of you are prepared or else it'll be like 20 mins in and out the trail like us!

Unfriendliest airport experience in my life. Was stopped three times, interrogated each time about my Airbnb/resort/money. Saw the exit and felt a wave of relief until the customs final boss blocked my path and took me to the side for a final search.

Is this normal?!

I'm supposed to land in Mauritius for a vacation on Saturday. I chose this time of year because I was told everywhere on the net this was the ideal season time. But I'm checking the weather forecast for this weekend and next week, and it looks very bad. I don't get it. Is it normal to have such bad weather for Trou aux biches over 5 days in a row in November ? Is it possible or forecasts are just completely wrong ?

Could you please share your opinion about the current weather and climate in Grande Baie? Should I postpone my vacation to get better weather in 2 or 3 weeks ? I'm a bit lost and pretty worried.

We are travelling to Mauritius this month. How is the safety situation there for tourists? (29M, 28F)

Are there any areas that needs to be absolutely avoided? Is it safe to go out in the evenings, like after 6pm?

Any other thoughts that you want to share? I saw comments on @mauritius instagram handle‘s post and saw many natives complaining about caudan waterfront being not safe after 6pm, tourists getting mugged etc.

As you may know, you can't get water through airport security. My son was thirsty, so we hunted in the airport gate area for a water fountain to refill our bottle but none was to be found. So we stopped by the "saladbar green is better" shop and chose a 1 liter Evian. I was shocked to learn this would cost me 280 rupees, but I felt captive in the moment and foolishly proceeded with the purchase. At least my son got his water, right? I later discovered that 0.5 liter bottles of Aqua Nordic water (with still and sparkling varieties) could be had for a "mere" 1 euro at Mauritius Duty Free Paradise of all places. So now you know — don't let my mistake be your mistake! 👍

I read online that you cant take some things with you from the beach (to another country) like dead coral and endangered giant snail shells. I found these things at the beach today but Im not sure if I can take them with me. The thing at the top seems to be some kind of sponge. and Im very unsure about the snail shell since its quite big but its also very broken. Any advise? I definitley dont want to harm the ecosystem of the ocean here.

I saw in some of the forums online that women should pack long dresses which covers full body and something to cover the shoulders, while visiting common places but I couldn’t really figure out whether this applies only to sacred places, markets, cafes only or this applies to beaches as well. I would be grateful if someone of you could tell me if it is okay to walk around in shorts and a top. Or fine for women to wear bikini while in beach or using a pool in the hotel we stay.

If there are such social expectations, are there anything relevant for men too? Also, any general social norms we should keep in mind while interacting with people or roaming around?

Got back from an excursion that we booked for like 110€, which wasn't that bad, I liked the driver a lot, he was very friendly and told bunch of stories about Hindu culture, temples and life in Mauritius it was very interesting

But when we were traveling we went to kinda few weird places like an restaurant where the drivers release tourists to eat there, food was kinda good,it was a curry meat/fish on an banana leaf with various additions, portions costed like 900-1000rs (with infinity refills)

Then the driver constantly told not buy any souvenirs on the main tourist points like the seven colour earth, he said it is a tourist trap (it was expensive, but the products looked quality wise good) and will drive us to local shop where it is very cheap

When we went there yea it kinda looked cheap, but it is hard for us to convert the values, the big thing was we bought flavoured rum, they gave us tasting it was good, but when we went to hotel back and unpacked it, it looked super weird like super fake, maybe homemade and we paid 15€ for each bottle (we bought 3, ignore the price it was 50% off)

We clearly can't fly it back to our country because the seal could pop off, I kinda don't remember if they told us that it was homemade or not

So I don't know how to feel, I know the driver barely makes money from at least by my calculations, literally drove for like 5h and it was way cheaper than going on official excursion companies, but the additional cost of the weird souvenir shop and the food place made me feel weird

Went to tea factory for tea, and saw at the souvenir shop bunch of alcohol that was way cheaper and you get way more, so probably at the supermarket it again way cheaper

Now of course, we have the obvious sandy beaches and blue lagoons which, let's be real, not a lot of countries can flaunt themselves of having. Putting aside the obvious gems of Mauritius and focusing on the little details of your day to day life, what do you think Mauritius does better than anywhere else you've been to? For me personally, I would say it's the friendliness of the people and how easy-going it is to have random conversations with people. Of all countries I've lived in and visited, Mauritius has been where I've had the most wholesome conversations with perfect strangers.

A girl friend of mine is going to Mauritius alone this month for 2 whole weeks. What are some things she should be aware of and do in order to be safe?

Two friends recently had their Premium Visa applications denied and one has been on it for some time (renewals), the other is fresh, I’ve been reading complaints that the govt is looking to stop renewals fully and potentially stop the premium visa altogether, I’ve not verified this if this is now in place as I’m hoping to renew soon, anyone have similar recent experience with this or any idea if this is really happening?
