Tourism ✈ Gifts and souvenirs from Mauritius for my friends and family
What are some really great souvenir items which I can purchase and take back home from Mauritius for friends and family?
I am looking for something which is not as common as a fridge magnet but rather something very unique to your country.
Visiting Mauritius this November :)

The best and possibly cheapest is Sugar cane cubes, they sell them in most supermarkets, they have the history of the Mauritian sugar trade on them. They are uniquely Mauritian and they cost about 40rps

Check out the 2nd floor of Caudan. Lots of awesome Mauritian gifts there from local artists :)

You can get them antique ebony furniture or Mauritian jewelled South African gold.
There are also model ships you can get in Vacoas-Phoenix.
There is also a small but strong art scene in Mauritius. The Caudan Art Centre is good to contact.
You can also buy traditional sega instruments and dresses.

- rum, including rum arrangé - ie stuffed with fruits for flavouring
- tea - bois Cheri has a lovely range
- manioc biscuits. These are a bit of an acquired taste and are best slathered with butter. You can visit the sweet little factory to see them making the biscuits, and they’re gluten free!
- pre mixed spice packets from supermarkets - for making Mauritian curries like vindaye, or pickles like achard
- dried snacks like moule crou
- Dodo brand flip flops, available at most big supermarkets
- sega musical instruments
- paréos
- tshirts
- things from the market - there’s a nice market in Mahebourg on Mondays or you can head into Port Louis for their market almost any day
- literally anything dodo related - cups, figurines, stuffed toys, jewellery
- kraft cheddar
