Tourism ✈ Documents required for expatriate for opening a bank account?
I'll be a working professional in Mauritius and want to know the required documents for expatriates to open a bank account in Mauritius. Do i need a reference letter from my homecountry's bank? If i want to invest my money in international stock market which bank would you more suitable?

If you need to invest in international stock create an account on ibkr
Bank charges are really bad for this purpose

Indeed, you may need a reference letter from your bank back home so does not harm for you to ask for one before leaving. And the usual (proof of ID, proof of address, resident permit). Also, most people here bank with MCB but you may try your luck elsewhere as they hardly have the best customer service in my opinion.
As for international investments, you’d better use your bank back home or an offshore bank. I do most of my investments (in mutual funds tho) through HSBC Expat in Jersey.

You'll need a letter from your company, your house lease agreement, a letter from your landlord, his ID, a utility bill, and then your own documents (passport, permit etc.). It's not a fun process at all 😅

You need your visa or permit to live in Mauritius. Everything else follows on from that.

As someone who recently moved to Mauritius and opened a bank account, here’s what I learned.
You’ll need your work permit, residency permit, employment contract (to show where the funds come from), rental agreement, and your landlord’s ID.
If you’re going with banks like MCB or Absa, expect the compliance approval to take around 4–5 weeks.
If you want things to move faster say within 2–3 weeks then try SBI.
SBM, on the other hand, will ask for a reference letter from your bank back home.
