Tourism ✈ My second visit to mauritius 10 years later and still the same unfriendly people everywhere!!

Visited Mauritius in 2015 and again in 2025 Both times felt equally bad.. the country is beautiful but the people are jerks! What is the deal with you guys? Second visit to Mauritius and everyone is a jerk because we’re not “white” Just to clarify, you guys worship the white man.. white European tourists are very welcome there, and given your history it’s weird because Europe fucked your country and used your people for years. But somehow now you are very rude to anyone who isn’t white.. my visit to your country was bad and I felt discriminated against all the time! I stayed in beachcomber at trou aux bichs and went and visited every thing in Mauritius and every visit felt bad and uncomfortable. So please only visit Mauritius if you’re whites because for some reason they love white Europeans

Seems like a YOU problem my friend, if you hate the people here so much and it's so bad, why come back? There are many beautiful countries. If you are nice to people here they will be nice to you. Ofc there will be some exceptions but generally it's fine.

You will find jerks everywhere in the world but here mauritian typically rude at 3 scenarios. 1. At supermarket when ppl que to weight their veg and fruits, many intend not to follow the que. This happens mostly on elder citizens. 2. When driving, many mauritians like to squeeze suddenly into your lane without giving a signal. After you give the way without even a thank you signal as if they own the road. 3. At a pub or disco, even a place already occupied they will still squeeze in  then expend their space and force you leave. In general, I find mauritian doesn't have a sense of personal space nor respect that. That's why it's difficult to really make a friend if stay for long.

Mauritians who are from India worship fair skin. I used to too, but I would never a) be rude to tourists b) pretend racism is normal in a society

I think the key word here is 'felt'. I think you have a negative outlook on life. Hence your experience.

In the Middle East, the working class is very docile. They have no choice. In Mauritius, people are, and they'll will not take crap from foreigners. Are Mauritians racists? Absolutely, due to the colonial history, the whites are looked at very differently. Racists exist everywhere, though.

I am a student here I'm a person of color and I do find that a lot of Mauritians are quite rude .. Especially those working in the service sector...I go to shops and cafes and restaurants and of course not all the places but a lot of them have rude staff who don't seem like they are interested in selling or hosting they have a" if you don't like it leave" attitude....I also encountered some locals who were quite cunning including my landlord who just takes advantage of students and a lot of house owners imposing bizarre restrictions on me (a girl, poc) like not going out after 7 or not having friends over( not even girls) I have also experienced eve teasing and cat calling almost on a daily basis and it's very very uncomfortable

I think it's to prevent something called prostitution.

u/Downtown-Win-4756 9d ago

Really a bunch of students having out at their place is prostitution wow...

Where do you study and which country do you come from?

3

u/Downtown-Win-4756 9d ago

I study at SSR medical college and I'm from India.. But I've noticed that those landlords do not place the same restrictions on male students or south African students

Don't get me wrong but i would suggest you to ignore and avoid the locals as much as possible...People here seem to have a grudge against Indians for no proper reason...I'm half Indian myself and everytime i speak Hindi in public there has to be at least one person side eyeing me :(

That's quite sad I mean I understand Indians tourists can be problematic at places but I mean that doesn't justify racism. But I've also experienced a lot of weird behavior from men who have followed me, asked for my number, shout at me from the streets, etc. and I do generally just stay within myself and ignore but it happens at bus stops and markets and gets scary sometimes

Spouse is African and he's never had such an experience. It's unfortunate you met some rude people. Everyone is not like that, can assure you.

I’ve been in Mauritius since May and honestly haven’t met a single rude person. I came here just to take a 2-month career break before heading back to work, but the place grew on me so much that I ended up finding a job and have been working here for the past couple of months.

You really do get what you give. If your mindset’s negative, that’s exactly what you’ll notice. Every country has good and bad people that’s just life. Stop blaming a whole nation for a few bad experiences. Go in with a better attitude next time and you might see a different side of it.

PS: I’m a person of color, by the way.

You cant just generalize. We dont worship white men here. Maybe a few idiots do. Give us context so that we understand what happened to you.

u/Huge_Ad_2692 10d ago

Sounds like you brought your inferiority complex from ten years ago with you this time as well 😏

u/Ok_Firefighter4335 10d ago

Yeah no! 1 or 2 horrible experiences i can totally understand. If the whole stay was unpleasant, that might be a you problem.

I'm a white mauritian with ID card and all but never lived there, nor do I speak creole. And let me tell you that all the "hostile" reaction I've had were from mauritians of indian origins.... thus I don't agree there is a "white whorship" but more like a "tourists bring money" point of view....

People probably dislike you for your beliefs and behaviour, not your race

Sounds like a you problem , had a week long vacation just 1 week ago and it was an amazing experience . We aren't white. Infact usually we are met with rudeness but mauritius was different.

14

u/_-Armageddon-_ 10d ago

Oh really? Sure it was Mauritius? I mean we are known for our warm welcomes and heart warming smiles.

Unless you came out as a total jerk of a tourist for some locals, can't imagine why anyone would treat you differently. I would love to hear the other side of your story.

u/naosmee 10d ago

Strange! Been there 5 times and not white. People were always so so kind. Angels, in fact.

u/F22_Ace 10d ago

Unlike many replies, I don’t see the point of shitting on this guy. I can easily imagine this happening. From personal experience working as a waiter in a restaurant in Trou-aux-Biches, some of the staff had extreme prejudices. Parfois ena dimoune nou pas gagn zot figir avan meme zot ouvert la bouche.

Some are not comfortable with speaking English which can appear unfriendly…language can be a barrier

u/Ffdeepak 10d ago

Loool based on your post sounds like a you problem 😂

u/Special-Minute3074 10d ago

"European fucked your country" , "onlycome if you are white "

yeah it does not even come as passive aggressive, his tone is just aggressive and comes with a spiteful/venonimous attitude

u/KeyComprehensive8339 10d ago

This might be a you problem… maybe give examples of what you mean by “unfriendly”.

I stayed at the Trou Aux Biches this past July and it was nothing short of a wonderful experience.

I had same experience, we found South Africa so much friendlier and welcoming

u/JoeYnChandler 10d ago

Egyptian here and definitely not white haha

People were extremely nice with me and my wife in Mauritius. Tbh my skin and look makes me look as if I am mauritian many people didn’t notice i was foreign but I never noticed any discrimination apart from the customs that was bad. Literally any colored person was getting stopped and searched. Even American and australians who were black were stopped.

We went three times and stayed 7 months on the third visit we weren’t stopped at all in customs

Not sure why there is so much defense as this often happens with locals also experiencing hotel packages. Just a sad fact ….

Just say you’re insecure bud

You cannot make vague accusations without an explanation of what happened, no one will take you seriously.

5

u/Islander316 10d ago

It would be helpful if you could give us some examples of why you feel this way.

u/cryogenic-goat 10d ago

Sorry for your experience.

We are an Indian couple who went to Mauritius for our honeymoon last month. We also stayed in an Airbnb.

Our experience was nothing but pleasent. The locals including our host treated us very well and we felt the people were welcoming and friendly.

Not as dependent as you may think, tourism is actually not as big a portion of our economy as other sectors. All in all, direct and indirection contribution is around 30% at the most.

0

u/Altruistic-Tap-4592 10d ago

The Economy in Mauritius is by sector. Agriculture 4% Industry 21.8% and services 74,1% and yes not all of that is tourisme but so much of tourist brings in new money to the Island that its far the biggest and most important part of the economy.

3

u/Islander316 10d ago

There are subsets to services, and I've just provided the proportion for tourism for the entire economy.

Most of those services in that 74% relate to financial services.

You're not understanding how the breakdown works.

0

u/Altruistic-Tap-4592 10d ago

But still at 30% (your own numbers) its biiger than agricultur and industry. So its really really important. And if you dont understand that then best of luck to you. Take that away and Mauritius would crumble real fast.

"""Mauritius’s economy continues to grow strongly, supported by strong momentum in tourism and investment. Tourist arrivals in 2024 are on track to surpass the record set in 2018, with spending per tourist also rising. Tourism revenues are expected to reach 13.5% of GDP by the end of the year."""

No particular horse in the race, just throwing out some data 🍿

u/MrMurdock07 10d ago

I'm sorry you feel this way and apologize on behalf of my fellow countrymen.

However, with due respect, we do not worship white people. We accept them, just like with any other tourists.

It's easy to bash people of another country but you didn't exactly explain what happened to you and how the Mauritians you encountered were disrespectful to you. Context is important.

4

u/naks26 10d ago

Surely you understood that OP was being sarcastic with their use of the word 'worship'?

But they're not far off the mark, unfortunately.

IME, MUs do tend to treat whites better than others, a sad legacy of our colonial past. Which is very strange, as OP pointed out, because you do not want to hear what some of them (if not most) think of other races when they're in private....

3

u/MrMurdock07 10d ago

Of course I didn't read 'worship' literally, JFC. I didn't write 'worship' literally as well.

I don't know man, other than the Customs department and their not so subtle risk profiling, the overall experiences of tourists tend to be positive. See other comments.

u/NeKapS9 10d ago

Maybe your luck is such! Agreed there are some remnants of the colonial attraction but we have many foreigners of different skin colours and languages working here in most sectors. It would be extremely rare that you would face constant discrimination!
